Well I tried. Buzz player downloaded and good reader would not open the file. Says unrecognized format. On the pc, wm player will playnthe file. Not sure what's up.

Don't try to open the file in GoodReader. Go to "Manage Files" tab, select your video, select "Open-In" function, and choose Buzz Player. The video should at that point open ip in Buzz player, and it should play it.

No files to manage. Getting the avi into that area is the problem. I can't import the files. Import doesn't recognize the avi

So it sounds like GoodReader doesn't want to import non-native videos. Bummer.

Of course, if you are willing to Jailbreak - iFile lets you do whatever you want with SD camera kit files. Can import them into apps regardless of file types.

I use avplayer HD. It's a great app that's in the app store. It plays any format movie and it's a simple drag and drop process.

well i cant even import the avi in itunes as it doesnt recognise the file..whats the point of having an app which lets you play avi files but u cant even get the avi on the ipad in the first place!

try using Handbrake

to convert the .avi files
Handbrake has an "iPad" preset output format all ready to go.
Select Source
Select output preset type (iPad)
Click GO

chug chug chug, it's done.

I do this all the time with .avi files I download and want to watch on the Apple TV.

If you have a lot of AVI files, you can batch process them with Handbrake as well.

you can via iTunes

iPad -> Apps -> 'scroll down' -> file sharing

This thread is a good argument for the file system.

Personally, I use CineXplayer. Said it's only for XVID but has no problem playing DivX and some other format that I currently have. Didn't test it with MKV or anything else.

Why are you being so negative towards the OP? That's why he/she is here trying to find an answer.

Geez grow some balls Mr/Mrs Sensitive. I took the trouble to answer the questions he posed, just pointing out that the answers are already here! Like for example in the two other threads currently on the front page labelled "how do i play avi files" (or like).

I any event, if you can get Airvideo working it's by far the best in my opinion. You can play movies on the fly or have it convert them for you while your out and about. This coupled with Logmein means I can download and watch any movie/TV show in about 10 minutes from anywhere in the world. :)

Just convert AVI files to iPad supported format MPEG-4, H.264 or Motion JPEG (M-JPEG).

Videora iPad converter is freeware.

All of the following have been mentioned already, but I thought it might be helpful to list them clearly. These are the apps that I use & they all work really well for the purposes listed below.

CineXplayer - To load .avi files on to the iPad without having to convert them first. Works with almost everything I've thrown at it.

AirVideo - To play .avi files on your iPad/iPhone from your computer over a WiFi network without having to convert them first. You must have the AirVideo software installed on your computer.

You can also use AirPlay with AirVideo & stream to Apple TV.

I also use AirVideo to convert .avi files to .mp4. From within the AirVideo app, select the video that you want to convert and click on the 'Convert' option. A converted file will appear where the original file is stored and you can add that to iTunes so that it will appear in the Videos app.

Buzz Player - To play .avi files directly from a NAS server without having to have your computer turned on.
