As I see it the S cycle upgraders are getting the better deal. The S models are the refined version of the generation. Either way though, if you change iPhones every 2 years, you're fine, no one is getting screwed.

Very true. I have the 4s and personally the 5 has not that great of updates to make me want it. I will get the 5s and if the 6 is a lot better and bigger screen ill sell my 5s and buy it full price if it is truly a big improvement over the 5s. As I see it the S users get a good phone it's just preference and its not hard to get out of the S cycle

thread summary:

butthurt user is butthurt. reasoning has no effect.

Seriously... you can cut this either way.

Enjoy your phone.

or don't and get on the other "upgrade cycle"...

Bah, silly debate, there's pro's to either cycle. The major fallacy in this thread is the suggestion that most people upgrade every year. That's nonsense based on assumption that forum goers are the norm when they're far from it. I still see predominately 4/4S users irl. Plenty of 5’s and Galaxy's of varying persuasions too, but proportionally more 4/4S's than 5s.

Myself, I've been sim free unlocked for a while and stuck to the non-S cycle. I could upgrade whenever I want but I've never felt any year on year upgrade is absolutely mind blowing and irresistible. The closest for me would be 3GS-4, as to me screen is everything, but I was on a 3G anyway. To others it's camera camera camera, so I dunno, 4-4S was significant to some people.

this is the most pointless debate I have come across in a while. As others have pointed out you are getting the EXACT level of upgrading going from 4->5 or 4S->5S.

If anything its better to be in the S upgrade cycle because your getting the better version of the phone.

The S phones are more polished than non S versions and also get better support from Apple:
EX: iPhone 3G vs 3GS -3GS has iOS 6, 3G doesn't even have iOS 5.
iPhone 4 vs 4S iPhone 4 was missing features in iOS 5, (like Siri) while the 4S has basically all of the iPhone 5's iOS 6 features.

The S phones are better than the non S phones, but the non S phones are the more obvious upgrades.

Just occurred to me. How are 5 owners going to feel if Apple skipped the 5S and went to a redesigned 6 now that the competition is heating up? Increase a number each year like the iPad line.

This is just a "what if" so don't go nuts about it.

The S versions are just better versions of the previous release. I find it weird to be on an "update cycle". Personally I prefer Apple devices but Androids are great too. Give yourself a break from the "cycle" and try a new product especially if you have been on iPhone since the 3. The only people who are getting screwed are the ones who never try anything new.

I keep getting bad impressions from Androids even if I don't actually try them out. I see Android users constantly charging their phones and a friend handed me his new S4 and my hand accidentally triggered hand gestures and caused it to go haywire, not to mention that he couldn't find the browser page he was trying to show me.

I think we're on the better side of the cycle

As a 3GS --> 4S --> 5S person, i think we get the better of the cycle. Though we may not get the design change immediately, we usually get the upgrade after all the issues that came with the design change are resolved for example, antenna gate on the 4, fixed on the 4S. Hopefully the scratching issues are resolved this time around.

From the perspective of S-upgrade cycle owners, I feel the iPhone-S's have a better reliability. Kinks in the original hardware are worked out. Case in point - iPhone4s antenna design, no issues with holding it wrong, 21.1 mbps against 14.4 on iPhone4.
3GS was a much better phone than 3G. people are still using it on iOS6.

EDIT: I see that most people made similar comments. I just replied on OP's comments.

For my situation....I have the 4 and was going to get a 5 but thought that it wasn't desirable enough for me to get it.. If the spec bump and all the new features are going to come through for the 5S then I will be happy about getting it..

Why should someone on an "S" cycle feel screwed? Did THEY not get an upgrade from what they were previously using?

People on 3GS who got a 4S got upgraded from non-Retina to Retina.
They got the improved antenna system and never had to experience "antenna-gate." They went from a 3.1 MP camera to an 8MP camera. They when from plastic to all glass design.

When 4S people get 5S, they will be going from HSPA+ 14.4 to LTE. They will go from an 8 MP camera to (likely) a 13MP camera. They will go from a 3.5" screen to a 4" screen. They will get fingerprint scanning (if the rumors hold). They will go from the all glass design to the anodized aluminum design.

The only people who should feel somewhat underwhelmed are those who will go from 5 to 5S.

This is right. The jump from 3GS --> 4s was just as big as from 3G --> 4. 4s --> 5s will probably be just as big as 4 --> 5 was. The fact that 4 --> 4s is a small change matters not one bit to those on a two year cycle because they don't own both of those devices.

Also, 3G --> 3GS was a huge upgrade, but that's old news, so I won't digress. ;-)

Thank you, OP, for starting this thread. I was on the fence about upgrading from a 4 to a 5s or a 6, and you helped me decide that it will be a 5s! Woot! Woot!
