I don't see it as significantly more when I take into account what I can sell my 5S for and what I save on my monthly phone bill by buying SIM free. I'm going from a 32GB 5S to a 64GB 6 Plus

Most people that are getting the plus did you previously own a 32gb or 64gb to justify paying the extra?

I settled on the 6 which I believe is £10 cheaper in the uk was than the 5s but still £40 more than it was a few years back.

Most I see go for the plus 64gb which is almost £700 or something which seems very expensive if going sim free.

I decided to replace my 5S a while back, when I realised at least one bigger screened iPhone was coming, so I simply budgeted for it.

I'm self employed, work hard and can put it through as a business expense.

In actual fact, I've somehow over budgeted for it, so I'll have the cash from the sale of my 5S burning a hole in my pocket too!

I also paid for it using my Amex card, as that had £145 of Cashback on it, so all in all, everything worked out!

Yeah, selling your old phones really helps offset the costs a bit.

Selling my wife's iPhone 5s and selling my Nexus 5 should get me anywhere between $400-$600+

I go to work. I do my work. I get my paycheck. I pay my mortgage. And buy food. Car payment. Insurance. I order phone. I fall asleep. Rinse, repeat. Except that I don't order a phone every day.

Your smartphone is probably your MOST used piece of technology. It is on you or next to you at all times 24/7. You use it for probably everything... from work to leisure.

It's worth the price (however ridiculous it may seem).

However, if you're taking out loans or would struggle to even meet the monthly installment plan prices, then you should NOT buy it. That's just a poor financial decision.

I might even go so far as to say if you don't have $1,000 cash or sitting in your debit account, then it's probably not the smartest move financially. But to each their own.

Im going from a 32GB iPhone 5 to a 128GB iPhone 6Plus.
I still have around 10GB free on my 32GB iPhone 5 to be honest, but with the bigger screen Im planning to store a lot more of my documents on it, as well as more video being taken of the kids etc. I may also transfer movies across to it to watch locally rather then having to be at home and watch via Plex....
Added to that, I can see a lot more complex games coming along soon, which all take more space.....
I also wanted to future proof for the next 2 years as well considering I will now only upgrade my handset every other year.

100% agree with this post.
Sound advice ;)

I'm getting $340 in Amazon credit for my black iPhone 5 64GB Verizon. The 128GB version I'm ordering is only $499. I'll take the most advanced iPhone ever in a massive capacity for ~$200 after taxes and upgrade fee. Seems like a steal. Just found out the reservation order went through too, so I'll get it on 9/19. So happy right now after a rough night.

I wish a Amazon UK would offer this.

There isn't much to contribute to describing my budgeting and how I can afford a phone.. maybe I missed something.

You did miss something-a constructive contribution to the discussion.

Whilst technology can never be considered an investment, the prices do remain quite high come resale time. The outlay is at least offset on the next purchase. Different priorities to different people; I work with a lot in IT who aren't actually interested in the newest phones. I got my mac this year; I suspect assuming my 5 doesn't lunch itself running ios8 next week I might pass. Visa have already said that apple pay won't be here in the UK til 2015.

Because I want it. I sell my old iPhone 5 32GB in mint condition factory unlocked (that covers nearly half the cost).
I have no mortgage or rent.
I never borrow money so I don't pay interest to anyone.
Due to my daughters medical condition we never have holidays or eat out.
But mostly because I want it.
