Thanks for all the replies. I ordered an Incase sleeve as well because I had found a deal on one. However I understand the sleeve part, but what happens when you pull it out to use it? It's naked. I was thinking about possibly getting a skin or clear speck case for use with my sleeve.

thats the exact idea i've been driving people to see. you need protection when you're actually using it.

I use a black spec plastic case on my 2010 macbook pro. its is dent and scratch free as the day i got it. there is a couple of really bad scratches on the bottom plastic so it saved me from some kind of incident. ive lightly bumped it in different ways that would have been small dings but the spec case saved it.

I dont think the spec case would save it from a bad fall but it does help tons with avoiding stupid dings from bumping it in weird situations that you think would never happen.

Most of all dont drink anywhere near it. I recently dumped a whole cup of juice on my macbook air all over the cover (it was closed). no damage but i got extremely lucky. I am real careful and never thought it would happen to me.

I use the Tom Binh Cache sleeve to carry. Simple, perfect fit, cheap, decent looking, and does the job. My Macbook is totally naked.

Keep in mind that the only thing that you may need to protect is the LCD screen and the bottom lid. Everything else gets completely replaced when you change the battery for $200. It's an amazing deal subsidized by Apple. The entire chassis, keyboard, and trackpad will be completely replaced with a new one, along with your battery, so I treat these as disposable items. Coincidentally the keyboard and trackpad are the highest wear items so getting "free" replacements from Apple, with your battery change, is really quite useful.

BTW, even the bottom lid doesn't *need* to be protected as you can easily buy a replacement part online if it really gets damaged.

I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro retina. It's my first MacBook although I have had an iPad and iPhone 3-5. Im debating on how i want to use/protect it. How do you all protect your MacBook? Clear skin, case, sleeve, etc..?

I've got one of these on my Mid 2012 cMBP.

At home my MBP sits in a teak stand I made and is hooked to a 23" ACD and full size keyboard. On the road I carry it in a Brenthaven computer backpack that cushions it very well. I don't use any other cover as I like the brushed aluminum look. I've been using a backpack case for 15+ years and just prefer that type.

Speck clear shell...Same on my MBA.

X2! Love the Spec clear cases. They're excellent for protection, see thru so the 'look' is still the same...light and durable.

I just use a Targus sleeve. Although it has a speciall caracteristic: It has a zipper, and when open, I can use my MBP inside, covering the down and up part.

For me it's enough, I strongly think that hard-cases can damage your laptop.

'Hard cases' don't damage or cause damage to a laptop. We've got eight Apple laptops, 5 of which we use in the field for business, the other three are personal...the oldest is a 2008 15". Still as shiny as the day we bought it. Two 17" (2011), a 2007 MB my seven year old now uses...two 15" rMBPs and a pair of MBAs. One from 2012, the other 2011. All have Spec cases. None have damage.

I typically carry mine in the Spec case, inside a regular shoulder laptop bag. Usually a 15" rMBP and a 11" Air, their associated cables, chargers and a regular sized iPad. The bag weighs about 12-14 pounds...they work great.

I do agree with several others though...common sense is absolutely 'key' to maintaining a healthy and happy laptop. Be smart with it, it'll last you many years. All of ours get 30-70 hours of use each week...they're constantly working...but I'm anal about their condition.

Congrats! Awesome purchase...enjoy it and take care of it.. You don't have to 'baby' it. Just be smart:)
