Wearing it into the shower (yes really), only wearing it long enough to wash my hair, then rinsing it and setting it aside, then wiping down the whole watch with my towel keeps it clean. It's as nice after fifteen... no, seventeen months as it was the day I got it.

Same as most of my other watches.

The idea is, the dirt that gets on the band is the same gunk that you wash off your skin every day (hopefully), so you can wash the band the same way.

I just use mild dish soap and warm water on all my Apple and Garmin sport bands. No issues from any of them..

Agreed. I think if you keep up with cleaning the bands overtime, you won't really have too many issues with grime. I clean mine on a regular basis when needed.

I've been doing it for years with my Garmin sports bands, never a single issue.. Are the Apple bands different or more delicate?
No idea, but the Apple website states not to use soap or chemicals while cleaning the Apple Watch

I just got the S1 Aluminum Gold Sport for Christmas w/ the OEM mocha sport band and realized the outside of the band has become slightly sticky or at least not as smooth feeling on the outside compared to the inside. Not sure if I spilled coffee or something on it without realizing.

Has anyone experienced this & do you have any tips on band maintenance? Just water, or is there a secret? Would anything damage it?

Take the band off and wash in mild soap. Rinse and dry. Simple

Once the band gets really bad I use one of those magic sponges to clean the staining off.

I just lightly rinse mine with water. Especially after a workout when the whole thing is glistening with sweat.

The Sports band is made of fluoroelastomer which is a type of plastic (polymer). In all likelihood no matter how you treat it, how many times you wear it, how often or any way you wash it when you throw it in the trash in 4 years it will look about the same as the day you bought it. Your great, great grandkids could dig it up out of the landfill, scrub it off and it will still look about like the day you bought it even though you are long forgotten and your body is now only dirt.

....It (fluoroelastomer) has wide chemical resistance and superior performance, especially in high temperature application in different media....

Well said William. Although I would add the strength of the band likely degrade somewhat being underground with various elements considered. . But any staining, should be able to be removed. Even paint can be removed off these bands. Apple's OEM flueroastamer bands hold well and are fairly durable in multiple environments.

Just to add: I got (paint) stain on my white and used Magic Eraser to remove and it looks good as new. Also my launch day band has been exposed to as much sweat, dirt and contaminates as any. I just shower with or use hand soap and warm water to clean.

I use Jason Markk cleaner its for sneakers but it's all natural and the oils in the soap help keep the bands supple. It's safe to clean leather suede vinyl plastic and rubber. So it's good enough to clean Apples sports bands. Fancy named rubber is still rubber, also no unicorns were harmed in the making of these bands.

I use the magic eraser and it works awesome. I have a few bands and MY routine is to work out with them on. Jump in the shower with the watch on (S2) get it wet but NOT soapy then take it off (use the magic eraser on the band mostly inside part that gets the dirtiest) in the shower scrub it until it looks good again and set it on a microfiber towel that is sitting and waiting out of the shower. Then when done with sed shower. Wipe it with micro fiber towel till its nice and shiny. BOOM back on my wrist to do it again tomorrow.

1. no chemicals
2. easy to do
3. looks brand new all the time

Magic erasers do work but they are all chemicals, melamine with formaldehyde along with some sodium bisulfite etc...
