I wish Apple would just keep the nomenclature simple :

iPhone Mini
iPhone
iPhone Pro

iPad Mini
iPad
iPad Pro

MacBook
MacBook Pro

This way, the people paying a premium for the larger and better product can feel good about themselves because they bought a "pro" machine, without introducing confusion into the lineup while keeping the name scheme minimalistic.

This would be a naming scheme I could get behind! However, I think we will see the same iPhone # or iPhone #S until the iPhone gets into the 10 stage. But Apple is Apple and they can do whatever they want. It would really streamline their product line if they could do it that way.

Wouldn't it be cool if they could do that for the Apple TV and even the Apple Watch.... Even though the watch is much more of a stretch than the TV. Just a thought.

If the new 9.7 inch iPad supports the Apple Pencil, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. Not to replace my IPP but to complement it.

No Pencil support, no dice. In that case, I'll just save my $$ to buy whatever IPP Apple comes out with next.

I'd like to know what differentiates it from the IPP.
I am on the last day of my return window but am leaning on keeping the IPP.

From what I read, the good money is on;

Same:
Pencil Support
Smart connector
Quad Speakers

Not the same:
Same resolution as the current Air 2, but same DPI as IPP (in other words, no change)
Camera flash (no interest)
Improved camera, maybe equal to iPhone 6 (no interest)
Memory? I would assume they would keep 2gigs because they are not pushing as big a screen.

If the IPP wasn't around, it would no doubt be the best tablet around.
I even like the rumor that it will be a little thicker then the Air 2.

If I were you, i'd hold on to that iPP until the second or even third gen of it comes out. With the proposed smaller Pro, there really is not enough to switch from your current iPP. Just my thoughts

Agree with above poster. The only reason to get the 9.7 iPad is if you want a 9.7 screen. Any other feature that it might or might not have are secondary concerns, not something to base your decision on.

No harm at all in having it, if it's the iPad Air replacement, I think it will appeal to many people who don't want a device as large as 13 inches. (OK, 12.9 :D ) I'm not personally interested in owning one, I like the current Pro size. But I'm always interested in seeing new Apple products.

I'm just curious about the naming scheme. iPad Pro Mini? Light? Junior? Nearly Pro? Gawd knows what they'll come up with.

I don't know, I can't really understand what Apple is trying to do here as far as branding. I think it's good to bring some of the cool features from the Pro to the Air and make screen size the key differentiator, but the "Pro" branding is confusing if they both share it. I think the Pro overall would have been much better received if it were the "iPad Plus" and they launched an Air 3 and Plus model together which both supported Pencil, had similar RAM, speakers, etc. if this were their plan all along.

The Pro really is just a bigger iPad, but Apple should have known a lot of the rumors had people expecting something a little different - like Surface maybe. I think my branding idea would have framed the Pro better.

In any case, I love my Pro and I'm not really interested in 9.7" anymore. I think it's great for people who are though, regardless of the stupid branding.

I think it's a good thing to have two separately branded iPad lines- iPad Pro is 9.7" with pro features (Pencil, Smart Connector), and 12.9" edition; iPad Mini and iPad Air for cheaper entry into iPad lines for buyers who don't need those features. This is the old Steve Jobs quadrant when he streamlined the products upon returning to Apple- two quadrants for every product line, Consumer and Pro.
