How do you justify 256gb iPhone X?

I want to try out Apple's iPhone upgrade plan, but it looks like they don't offer it for the unlocked version yet. Who knows how long will it take for the supply to be stable enough so they will offer the unlocked ones....

I justify everything I buy. It was never a question of affordability. But that's just me though. Thanks for playing.

Also about other posts saying $x/month, I don't know if that's the new definition of affordability...$x this $y that per month. I see this as giving away a piece of ourselves to financial behemoths like Apple who are only happy to take our money with much less in return than what it used to be. I mean the excitement of an iPhone is not just what it used to be honestly. And I cannot count how many Apple products we have at our home.

"Seriously...how do you justify it to yourself for a 256gb X upgrade/purchase? I mean with tax and Apple care (which is $50 more than what it used to be), it works out to about $1400! ..for a phone..that'll probably last about 3-4 years."

Hmmm, you could have fooled me. Your quote above reeks of serious doubt. You shouldn't have to ask a bunch of strangers how they justify spending $1400 on a phone. I just want to add that I was not trying to be rude in my original reply. If I second guess a purchase, I typically skip buying it. Impulse purchases are not my thing.

Hey a Mom I just bought an iPhone X

What !! You take that back to the store right now young man !
Don’t you know children are staving in Biafra

The justification for not buying it was pretty easy for me. The product itself was quite underwhelming despite having some interesting tech. If it had been the price of the 8 then I’d have likely got it, but the £400 premium just makes it absurd. When a weird screen shape and animated emojis are the main part of the pitch, it suggests to me this device is aimed more at rich teenagers rather than 30 something professionals and beyond.

Don’t get me wrong an animated emoji is probably quite funny when used once for novelty purposes, but am I really going to ask my wife what she wants from the supermarket through a talking animated squirrel every time? Probably not. Animated emojis are about as useful as a piano app on a busy train as far as I am concerned. The phone is hideously overpriced and I am not a mug.

Sure it's a lot of money, but I've been saving for it for a few months now. Though I'd lie if I said I haven't considered to ditch the idea of a new phone and just get a used iPhone 7 to upgrade my ageing 6+.

256GB is definitely more than I need but 64 will not be enough in the long run. So no choice there really.

So if the iPhone X sells like hotcakes, that would suggest that there must be way more rich teenagers than we originally thought.

Possibly. Although we know it will sell out immediately due to such limited supply. Rich teenagers and the Kardashian generations need for having something flash will mean this phone will be popular within its niche.

I bought a 128GB 7 Plus few months ago (upgraded my 32GB 7).
The main reasons why I’m thinking about X are:

1-Size. I want large display but feel the overall size of 7 Plus (and 8 Plus) is really cumbersome to handle.

2-OLED display.as a previous Galaxy Note owner,I absolutely love and believe in superiority of OLED vs LCD.

3-New design. I don’t think X looks that stunning,it looks good, but what really bothers me nowadays is the outdated, tired and old looking design of 7 Plus (and 8 Plus).
In short X looks fresh and so much better than 7/8

I won’t buy Apple Care for iPhone as It’s too expensive and not worth it imo.Never did and never needed it.

I’m still undecided about storage size.

That being said I have to say I really dislike lack of home button, lack of touch ID,the presence of that silly notch and horizontal protruding camera lens.

Those are pretty much the same reasons I like and dislike the X, but I will get one anyway.

I’m also a 7 Plus owner now, the X will have less screen real estate in many cases compare to the 7 Plus. Especially if you are watching a lot of videos with 16:9(or narrower) aspect ratio. With documents and web browsing you will get more from top and bottom, but narrower screen, which means text will be smaller too...

Well this seems like an appropriate place to post this. I didn't want to create a separate thread. So for what it's worth:

"A new survey conducted by RBC Capital Markets offers a clue on what iPhone X model you should buy if you want to get the new handset on launch day, Nov. 3. The survey, which included 832 would-be iPhone X buyers, was first reported by MacRumors.

Of those surveyed, 28 percent said they plan to purchase the iPhone X as their next smartphone. An additional 20 percent said they intend to buy the iPhone 8 Plus, while 17 percent will go for the iPhone 8. The remaining 35 percent will probably purchase an older iPhone model, ranging from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 7 Plus.

Of those planning on buying an iPhone X, 57 percent think they’ll purchase the 256GB model priced at $1,149, while 43 percent say they’ll buy the $999 64GB model.

Demand for the iPhone X will far outpace supply for months to come. Because of this, it might be wise to purchase the 64GB version when the handset goes on sale Oct. 27. This model might be in less demand and therefore, the one you’re most likely to receive on Nov. 3."

Sorry, it this was posted elsewhere. If it was I couldn't find it.
