Don’t understand people’s need to ‘justify’ getting something like this. At the end of the day, there’s really no justification for spending that much money in something like this when there’s much cheaper and virtually identical (functionality wise) options available even from Apple. If you’re getting it it’s because you want it not because you need it - I suppose the closest thing to justification is you work hard, you can spend your money on what makes you happy!

Same way as I justified the Martin 00-15SE, Martin OM-28, Gibson LP Standard and Fender American Professional Telecaster guitars I purchased and only being a beginning guitar player (hadn't even started lessons when I purchased them).
Simply because I wanted them and they were the tools that I wanted to work with and I can afford them.

Dude, me too. I bought a vintage 73 Strat, and I’m a beginner. It sounds beautiful even though I don’t. :)

People spend their money on what they want, whether they need it or not. Apple can charge $1000-$1400 for a phone because they know people will pay it. If you don't like the price. Buy something else. As long as people will pay a premium for something, companies will price it at a premium. If people stop paying a premium, price will come down. That's the beautiful thing about living in a capitalistic economy..

Seriously...how do you justify it to yourself for a 256gb X upgrade/purchase?

$150 is not a bad sum to spend to get extra 192GB of storage space.

Having said that, I rather spend $119.88/year toward 2TB iCloud. Most of my iPhone 7 Plus 128GB's storage is used by Photos and Messages apps.

iCloud Photo Library with Optimize iPhone Storage solves Photos.

Upcoming update to iOS 11 will bring Message on the iCloud with similar benefits.

That only leaves my local TV and Music library, in which 64GB will suffice for my needs.

Seriously...how do you justify it to yourself for a 256gb X upgrade/purchase? I mean with tax and Apple care (which is $50 more than what it used to be), it works out to about $1400! ..for a phone..that'll probably last about 3-4 years. Those of you who say their current phone doesn't put up with me anymore..would a cheaper 8 not cut it? Why X? I know you may be able to afford it, but why throw away money?

Curious to know your reasons..

Throw away money? What? These are essential devices to many lifestyles and career paths. If you're keeping it three years you're paying like 15 cents per day on top of an 8 Plus, for something you look at and interact with a hundred times per day, every day. Some customers want the most elegant and cutting edge experience available and can see the value as spread out over the period of ownership.

Same question can be asked to those who buy BMW, Mercedes, etc. If you can get around in a 1986 Corolla, why do you see any need to get something else? A better experience. A more capable camera always at the ready for photographers. More processing power. The ability to appreciate some of the best manufacturing and innovation of our time on a device you look at more than you do anything else. For me it's an absolute no brainer, and this thing is going to sell like water in a desert just as the $949 top storage Plus models have for the past three years.

You have a personal opinion as to when you cross some line that suddenly means whoever is purchasing (item) at (price) is throwing their money away. Not all of us share that same opinion or threshold, and that's why Apple sells an absurd number of different variations of iPhone at every conceivable price point. The X is for one type of customer, and the 8/7/6S/SE are for another.

Actually with today's standards $150 for 192GB of data storage is very high.

But historically with iPhone storage tiers and flash memory prices, it's a pretty okay deal. The iPhone consumer base has been paying $100 to increase from 32 to 64, 64 to 128 for years - and while I obviously wish we got more for less, it's not a total gougefest.

Agreed

Historically 10 years ago we were paying $100 more for the 8GB iPhone and $200 more for 16GB.
Now a 4TB drive is about $100.
Smartphone storage upgrade prices have been way too high the past 4-5 years.

That's another way to look at it

A 4TB drive is giant, fragile, and a "smaller" 2.5-inch one that's nearly the size of the entire iPhone tops out at around 100MB/sec read/write. Last year's 256GB iPhone could read at nearly 1,000MB/sec and write at around 400MB/sec.

PCI-E Flash storage at this very moment is about $140 for 256GB spread out over a number of common and inexpensive 16/32/64GB chips together on one board. The iPhone has 256GB of fast storage crammed onto a single die - the price is right where it should be at this point in time.

Comparing iPhone storage to a disk drive is not apples to apples. An SSD would be a better comparison.

I agree, I was just speaking about data storage prices plummeting over the years.
What they been charging for smartphone upgrade storage options for years now has been way too high.

Where I live (Calif.)--a new iPhone X 256 will cost about $1396.00 including tax and AC.--thats $1.27 a day over 3 years.
Not as much as a cup of coffee, soda, sports drink, cigarette, and on and on.
A bargain for an item most people get a great deal of use and pleasure.

I have examined my needs and wants as well as my financial situation, and I have determined that I want it and that I can afford it and that the X will meet my requirements; therefore, I am not "throwing money away". The iPhone is my main, everyday, go-to computer. There, justified.

Wet blankets have been trotting out this line of thinking since the original iPhone (long before that actually, regarding any number of unrelated expensive products). Even when most of the cost of the iPhone was buried in carrier contracts, some asked "how can you justify spending $200 on a PHONE!?". Countless people would say to me, "you spent $200 on that? I got this phone for 'free'". I bow to your wisdom.

How can you justify spending X dollars on a camera, a bicycle, a vehicle, a watch, a TV, golf clubs, a pool, granite counter tops, dog food, tuition, etc? If it's not for you, fine. Don't be so arrogant that just because you can't see spending money on a thing that there's not a good reason for others to spend money on that thing. Some people just love raining on others' parades.

(The iPhone X camera will be even better)

Thanks for chiming in. I am not being arrogant. Sorry if I came across that way - just wanted to hear some opinions.

Wow, the way you describe it (and I see a lot of people describing the way you do btw), its actually a bargain. Apple is really generous here with us. $1.27 a day is a pure bargain

In my world $1396 is still $1396, either in a 24 months plan or like you said $1.27 a day
But I can understand people trying to like it to sound that $1396 is actually much much lower

Apple should really get the 2018 oled iPhone priced at around $ 2700 (incl AppleCare+), thats just about $ 2.50 a day over 3 years....a little bit more then $2.
Come one...everyone can miss about 3 bucks a day, right? that's just 1 or 2 coffees a day!

by the way, the other day I bought some underwear for $200. But since I am wearing it for about 2 years (with washing it sometimes ofcourse haha), that's less then a buck per day. Thats just a bargain of course... for underwear.

:p:p

4TB for $100? Where? Or are you asking for iPhone to go back to iPod classic's 1.8" hard disk platter (which is about 100 times slower)?

As for $150 premium for 192GB more storage, Macs carry $199 premium for upgrading from 128GB to 256GB. While Apple's prices are much higher than off-the-shelf SSD, it is worth noting that Apple uses 4-6 times faster NVMe over PCI-E bus. Yes, Apple is still ripping us off, but at least iPhones are no longer being ripped off more than Macs.

Yes you can purchase 4TB's of storage for $100.
Macs are way overpriced so you're also comparing uneven things.
All these years paying $100 and $200 extra for the higher available storage options were a rip off.
Because the storage chips cost nowhere near what they're tucking on;)

Can you show me where you can get 4TB of flash storage for $100?

The best I see is 500GB of much slow spec'd SSD that is too large to fit inside mobile phones for $125.

I wasn't referring to ssd disks.
You can buy an sata internal disk or even USB drives for that cheap.
And transfer what you have there from your phone periodically.
I'm not the person to carry 100GB of music or all my life's photo albums with me at all times.
And I always found the iPhone storage bump prices unreasonable.

Personally, I don’t really see the overall cost as a factor in my decision. I’m on the Verizon Device Payment Plan and upgrade my iPhone yearly. Going from a 7 Plus 128gb to an X 256gb is only about $11 more a month than I currently pay. That doesn’t seem bad at all in my eyes, so I’m fine with it! It’s not like I’m paying $1200+ upfront.

Apple and Verizon are really generous to you here
