I think you are wrong about that. I am one of those upgraders and there are many more especially on these tech forums. Gotta have the latest and greatest. It's even easier now with the Next program. :)

Right because the significantly small community on this forum represents Apple iPhone buyers as a whole.

I tend to do every other upgrade, as you don't get such a big change in performance from one to the next. Especially the s model.
But how do you justify owning a car or going on expensive holidays?
Everyone's different.

Even every other iPhone doesn't present a huge upgrade, at lease to me. I am debating upgrading from my 4s to the new one but we will see

At this point, I am not only sorry I asked the question, but I am also sorry I joined the forum. I think there are more very young people here than there ar older folks. No one I know in my life would make the sort of responses many made to my question. Many of you sound not just unfriendly but rude.

Remember, this is the internet. Anonymity tends to made people more rude than they would be in other circumstances. It's the CB radio of the new age.

That being said, I don't think Applejuiced was rude to you.

like one said apple products have high resale value most of us including me resell mines on craigslist and use that towards a new iphone

The main problem is that you have asked a question that has been discussed many times over the years. Also the question itself "how do you justify it" has a negative connotation that makes it seem like those who choose to do it are being wasteful and need to justify it to someone. That is immediately going to put people on the defensive because they will feel attacked whether that is the way you meant it or not.

Welcome to the forum btw, make sure to utilize the search feature often because there is a wealth of information out there and very few topics that have not been discussed already.

Lastly I bet you would be surprised by the age makeup of the forums.

Exactly! And that's also the reason why I always buy my phones unlocked.

Hello everyone,

I am brand new to this site and to iphones. I just ordered an iphone 5s 64GB from an individual for $550 shipped. It should arrive next week. It is factory unlocked, and I plan to use it on Cricket Wireless.

I realise version 6 will soon be available, but I concluded that it will likely cost $800 or more for iphone 6 with 64GB's worth of storage, so I opted for a brand new 5s for a much lower price. It makes good economic sense to me.

My question is why would anyone who purchased a 5s at the time it first came out now want to spend close to $1K for iphone 6 just a year later just to have the newest model? How do you justify it?

I enjoy having the latest tech in my hands. It's a device I use constantly, throughout the day, every day. In many ways, it's my portal to the world, my connection to my friends and family, my way of recording the things going on around me, it helps me get places, find what I'm looking for, direct my media entertainment, and even play games from time to time. It's what I use to identify music, people, events, and food. It's what I use to make sure the dog treats I'm about to buy really are made in the US. It records my trail runs with interactive, informative data maps afterwards. It also records my drum lessons, lets me write new drum tracks. I also use it from to time as an emergency portal into my work servers. With it, I know my kids are safe, where they're supposed to be, and I can keep tabs on my critical services at home, too. There's so much more, but you get the point.

In short, this is a device that is a key component to many aspects of life, is something I'm using constantly.

I really enjoy having the most capable device with me for all that and I have the cash to make that a reality. There's no need to justify it, really. Some people spend hundreds of dollars a month on cigarettes, or alcohol, or starbucks, or clubbing, new clothes, video games, whatever.

Provided we're not hurting people by it, where we spend our money for things we enjoy isn't something that requires justification.

How do people justify $500 purses?

$60,000 cars that get them to work the same time as the $18,000 car.

$150 dinners many nights a week.

The list goes on and on.

By the way, a large majority of the folks that post here are iphone fanatics. They would get a new phone every 6 months if Apple came out with one. Why? Because they just must have it.

The same way people buy designer clothes, expensive cars, watches, staying at 5* hotels.

Everyone has their own wants and desires. I don't think anyone has to justify how they spend their own money providing it's not spent illegally.

I purchase an iPhone every 2 years, this time round it's been 3 years however.

With phones, I find it to be very beneficial to be both an early adopter and frequent upgraded. The more sought after a phone is, the more likely you'll get your investment back as long as you sell it off during the initial feeding frenzy stage.

It beats being a meth addict. Cheaper, too.
Lol, that's exactly the excuse I used to tell my mom regarding video games. Now that I'm an adult and not dependent on my parents for allowance, I don't really find the need to create justifications other than I want it and I can afford it. :D

So true. My co-worker calculated he spent over $1k in cigarettes every year.

Possibly not to the same extent, but I always take a sandwich for my lunch when I'm in the office and I tend to not visit coffee shops very much, my lunch is one of my savings whereas to others, it's worth paying for their time saved making it.
My phone has become so pervasive in my life, I place it with a higher priority than a pret sarnie (and I have to make my two children's lunch in the morning anyway..).

Did you think about your original post when you sent it? It comes off a bit rude... Maybe it wasn't meant that way but it does. Questioning people how they justify it without giving more of your story up front can lead to a feeling of you being judgemental.
Honestly, I feel that simple logic would have given you the majority of the answers that we provided you with. They have oodles of cash to spend, they sell their old phones to offset the cost, etc. Perhaps you're not well educated on the high resale value of used iPhones. A lot of us are.
I now know that you're new to the forum. It wouldn't change my response to you, though. Had you mentioned your budget mindedness in the original post then the answers probably would have been different. I don't think you thought your post out very well. Sorry you didn't like the majority of the responses that your post received.

i think some of us spend money on non sense anyway heck i spend 100 bucks on weed every week :D:D

Maybe the word "justification" was what put a lot of readers on the defensive. I repeat: I was not trying to start an argument but just to understand why some people wish to buy a brand new phone every single year. That is all.

Point taken. I for one do none of those things. I cannot afford them, but even if I felt I could afford them, I would purchase a $60K car, or spend $150 on one meal, etc. It is just not in my make-up. I would much rather drive a regular old pick-up truck and use the money I save for other things, e.g. helping those who have a lot less than I do, including animals. Donating to charity makes me feel much better than a $60K car or a $150 supper ever could. "Nuff said.

The next plan is terrible for corporate discounts or grandfathered unlimmited plans.

The discount is only on the shared part and not the line access charge whereas before it was for minutes and data and there was no access fee.

I did this comparison a few weeks ago. It's ~$400 without the discount and ~$600 with the discount more expensive for the next plan than just a normal upgrade like the old plans for two lines for my wife and I. Since activation fees and resale are the same I didn't include them in the cost.

Understood. I do it because I enjoy it. I'm a lover of tech. I work deeply in the tech industry (as a senior level software engineer) and am still enraptured by it. As such, having an example of Clarke's 'magic' at my disposal is something I'm always in wonder of.

We all have the areas we contribute where we can, make the world the better place according to our capabilities. I do enjoy the fruits of my labor, it's true. It's what motivates me to keep doing more. At the same time, I also contribute greatly to animal oriented charitable causes (rescue of circus animals, local animal shelters so they can house more animals and take care of them properly, etc). Those two endeavors are not mutually exclusive.

I don't have to "justify" it. I buy what I want, when I want. Jeez.

I couldn't find any rude responses. People answered your question. Why did you ask it, if you weren't interested in the answer. Maybe there is a forum somewhere that allows you to ask the question and pick only the answers you want.

I have bought everyone, since the 3. I sell the old one "unlocked" on eBay, "re-up" my 2 year contract....the net result is a new phone and costs me about 100.00.

I couldn't justify buying a 5s now....I agree there will likey be a price increase, but who knows...it may cost 100.00 more but have 8gb more memory or something else...

(I am sure I will get corrected with the "actual" stats of the 6, but as of now it's a rumor.)

I would carry around a bag-phone (note my name) for a month before I would buy a 5s...

In conclusion, I am glad people will buy the 5s....otherwise I couldn't sell mine ;)
