On January 27, 2010, the one hundredth anniversary of Thomas Crapper's death,[23] Cottonelle launched a "Great Debate" advertising campaign, inviting American consumers to vote their preference at a Kimberly-Clark website.[57] The result was announced during the 82nd Academy Awards: 72% had voted over.[58] In a more traditional preliminary survey of 1000 Americans, Cottonelle found that "overs" are more likely than "unders" to notice a roll's direction (74%), to be annoyed when the direction is incorrect (24%), and to have flipped the direction at a friend's home (27%).[59]

The poll results here are pretty similar to Cottonelle's results. I remember seeing billboards all over LA for their ad campaign before the summer.

I prefer over as well.

I made a diagram for my roommate because it does bother me that much;

Preliminary results of testing:

If your tp holder is mounted above a forced air grille on the floor, placing the roll on the holder "the wrong way" (see above) will NOT result in the remaining tp being unrolled when the roll is almost spent. If you put it on the "right way", apparently that end flaps in the breeze more easily, and it all ends up on the floor.
