I’m just wondering since all apple stores are closed in the U.S. now, what if I crack the screen on my iPhone (with AppleCare+), where do I go for replacement? (since i have AppleCare, I usually just ask for a whole unit replacement rather than screen repair)

Apple are still doing mail in repair in the UK at least. Just had the battery on my X replaced using this service.

How long does that usually take? I only have 1 phone..

Family member cracked the glass on the back of his camera on their iPhone x. Apple sent him out a replacement phone in just under a week. Then he sent his phone to apple.

They charge your credit card if you do it that way.

You end up getting the money back once you receive your phone and send back the phone they gave you.

I believe that would only work that way if you have AppleCare.

Nope his apple care was expired on his device.

Oh I see I read your post again and see that the phone they send you is a loaner, not the device you end up keeping.

With AppleCare the one they send you would be the one you keep, Apple then keep your broken phone.

Correct

In the end he never sent the phone back, they kept the damaged phone. They told him to keep the phone they sent out to him.

Guess it depends on who you deal with over the phone.

I guess if the broken phone can be repaired and placed into the reconditioned supply chain then it would be a waste of time shipping it back to the user since you’re basically talking about 2 comparable reconditioned phones.

If you can, wait until the stores reopen. The mail system is completely overwhelmed right now with packages and the chance of them losing your package is something to seriously worry about.

No problem here I got my phone back on Friday after sending it a week earlier.

actually, I would not give that advice. Think about the Apple stores once they open, do you have any idea how many appointments in store they will have? A lot. Not to mention, customers flocking to the stores, adding to the fact that they will have ‘limited capacities’ allowed in the store. I would rather just mail the product in and have them ship it, unless it’s absolutely imperative you need to have it back within XYZ timeframe.

I’d rather be at an Apple store for a few hours vs my phone being lost in the mail.

Will Apple take responsibility if it does happen or push you towards the mail carrier?

You wouldn’t give my advice because you don’t directly deal with mail service like I do and see what’s currently going on. It is an absolute **** show.

I had my Apple Watch Series 5 replaced at the beginning of lockdown via mail. It took 7 days from the time I received the shipping box to the time I got a replacement watch. I was very happy with that.

I hate going in to Apple Stores personally as they are usually packed and disorientating at the best of times. I think even when they are back open i’ll use the mail service even if it takes longer to get a repair or replacement.

Look around for independent shops. There’s one open in my area in New Hampshire. I guess you can make an argument that they’re essential. People need phones.

Seeing he has AppleCare+ which will cover a screen replacement for $29 using original Apple parts why would he want to use a 3rd party repair facility using a aftermarket screen that will cost him much more to replace?

If you have AppleCare you can get express replacement - they send you a replacement phone, you keep the replacement, then you send your original phone to Apple. You'll need to authorize a credit card for the value of the replacement phone as a sort of security deposit. When they get your old phone, they remove the authorization.

This is the route I'd recommend, especially since the OP only has one phone. One of the perks of having AC+.

Exactly. If it is totally ruined, it's not as much of an issue, but something where the phone still functions, how long will you be phoneless, especially with all the burden on mail in repair?

Cool this is how it should be right now.

Yea as long as it is something that doesn't disable using the phone at all, then you can wait however long for your appointment.

I would be shocked if Apple was not spacing out appointment times. They may offer every 15 minutes, but it is going to be like 1/10 of the amount appointments they usually have.

Is this the standard practice for AC+ now or do I have to really ASK for it?
