Easy to survive with one of these, makes me think I was overthinking my purchase as this thing suits all my REAL needs, although a MBP LOOKS nicer.
And is much faster, has a larger screen, better keyboard/trackpad, better built in sound, better wifi, better wifi range, better expandability, better connections, better CD drive etc...
Although the £600 difference is a *little* on the high side
Personally, I'd wait until Leopard comes along. There will almost certainly be upgrades to both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro line, DEFINITELY updates to the MacMinis and possibly an iMac update too. MacPros will not see any updates at all IMO, there is no reason to upgrade it. It's already the fastest machine money can buy, and it's cheaper than all other ultra-high performance computers out there.
I'd wait, it's not that long until Leopard comes out, and I reckon we'll see the graphics chips in the MacBooks updated to something beefier (although not the X1600, that would take too much away from the MacBook Pro line, it'll still be integrated graphics of some sort).
