How do I turn the MBP completely off so that it doesn't turn itself back on when I'm cleaning the screen or keyboard? The device is a 2021 MBP.

At the password screen, click shut down. It shouldn't come on again unless you hit the power button.

fa8362: Even though I select "Shutdown," the machine still comes back on when I touch a key or move the machine around.
If you select it at the password screen, it shouldn't come on again. Note this is before the machine boots up.

jdclifford: I do select Shutdown, but I think it has something to do with what Jack Neill referenced to.
I see what you mean. Just tried that on my 14" MBP M1Pro. I've never really had an issue wiping my screen or keyboard. Usually I just use the hot corner to turn off the display and wipe it with a micro cloth. Same with the keyboard.

Lock the screen (press the touch-id/power button) then clean whatever you like; apart from entering random characters into the password field it'll do no harm.

Or clean it quickly while it boots; probably better right after you've logged in. You have a few seconds; how dirty is your keyboard? :)

How do you turn your MacBook Pro completely off?

put that in a box and buy a Dell XPS 9380 series.

UPDATE:

"Tristen" at Applecare said that there is no way to turn the machine off completely. He put me on hold while he checked with his senior advisor. So at this point, I will have to be very careful while wiping off the keyboard and/or screen so that I don't disturb the password box. I guess I'll continue to shut the MPB down several times within the process. ?

I use Keyboard Cleaning Tool and a black wallpaper so I can see most of the dirt on the screen. :)

Shut down without closing the lid. Rest the back of the lid on a table surface when cleaning the screen so that it is completely stable. Use compressed air or a blower to clean the keyboard. Keep your hands clean when using the machine ;)

Disconnect mag-safe connection, AND disconnect the battery

It will 100% DEFINITIVELY not power on.

I can GUARANTEE that.

if you're that anal about this issue and cleaning your MacBook......

OP:

You don't want to "clean the screen" any more than absolutely necessary.

Too much "cleaning" can result in the condition called "StainGate" (if you don't know what that means, look it up).

How do you disconnect the battery if it's built in? I can do that with my 2007, but the 2021 is all integral.

I have given up on the iKlear. It works great on a plastic matte LCD screen like the 2007 has, but smears around like honey on a 2021 screen. I'm just going to use a super soft fuzzy car polishing towel.

This was a problem on some of the old screens (such as my 2013 15" MBP) but not on the newer ones that I've heard. I clean my screen regularly on my 2020 MBA and there's not a hint of an issue with the coating.

A damp microfibre cloth then dried with a glass polishing cloth. If it's got greasy fingerprints on it (either from opening/closing the lid or from people poking the screen - I sometimes use it to show a group of people things) then a bit of soap along with the wet microfibre cloth brings them off a treat.

As I mentioned above, simply lock the screen. If you wipe the keyboard at the same time, using the same method, then who cares if the password field fills up with characters?
