i tend to type like this when im instant messaging or text messageing. i do use punctuation to a small amount but i dont bother with capitals.

Now when typing on a forum, it's always like this, in the most proper way I can muster (Which is tragically horrible ).

I have an irrational compulsion to type as properly as I can. As perfect spelling and grammar as I can possibly muster. Doesn't mean that I'm good with proper writing (or typing) though.

Know that feeling. I'm compulsive about checking my posts here to make sure I spelled every thing right and didn't leave out any words, which I often do.

i usually write in correct grammatical english. exceptions will be if i need to type a message fast (like talking during a game) or have only one hand free (eating something), when i will write less than grammatically correct like 'saw chipper catch?' referring to chipper jones making a play on the field for an out. i less often use shorthand like 'u ok?' or something. i hardly ever go to im lingo, expect for lol and a couple of other well known ones, i just find it confusing and forces me to break out the im=english translation guide.

Hey, a bit of info here in case you didnt know, when you text, if the message is over 160 charictors, it gets sent and charged as 2 messages. If you then do another 160 it gets sent and charged as 3... And so on... So unless you have unlimited texts, it actually saves money to typ lke ths on txts!

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, some people I know talk in a mix between 1337 and text talk like this: h3ll0 wt u b33n D0in? They are not trying to be 1337 or anything, its just how they type in MSN... Weird

"I totally like leetspeak" - not really. Anyway, usually don't bother with capitalization, use abbreviations, etc. with IM type stuff.

While instant messaging, I type out full words (although I do use lol, brb, ttyl, and iirc), but I tend to ignore capitalization. I use punctuation except when it's a period at the end of the message, so usually, there isn't much punctuation. I use Adium's spell check, so instant messaging actually improves my spelling.

Otherwise, I type like I do in this post.

Also, I prefer to type in the Dvorak keyboard layout.

For IMs I generally type close to complete sentences, like this, but I don't always worry about capitalization or spelling as long as my message is still clear and conscious (while also appearing reasonably intelligent). Abbreviations are rarely used.

At MacRumors, I usually try and make my posts grammatically correct and as easy to read as possible. The same is usually true for my emails as well.

When writing formal letters (or formal emails) or any other written works, I do my best to ensure grammatical accuracy, paying close attention to syntax, connotation, diction, spelling, etc.

I've always wondered what iirc and ttyl mean, care to shine some light on the subject?

ttyl = Talk to you later
iirc =If I recall correctly

In my experience, iirc, which I picked up from MacRumors, is lesser known than ttyl. I also use atm (at the moment), which I also picked up from MacRumors.

I always use full english almost everytime. I don't always capitalise or punctuate, however. I'll also throw in an lol, omg, or emoticon in case my message may get misinterpreted, which often does.

I also try to use more sophisticated words to condense what I'm saying, but usually I have to explain what the word means to my friends. :p

Txt talk has no place on the internet.

I will however use internet slang in an ironic fashion 'cause I'm 1337 like that.

I use a few abreviations once in a while, espically on text messages. I took typing in High School and really learned how to type when I was writing my Master's Thesis in Grad School. It actually takes me longer to figure out what the short-hand should be then if I would just type it.

I use some of the abbreviations picked up back when everyone was cruising along on 300bps dialup to some BBS, using 12MHz machines. Usually back then one was just trying to get some piece of equipment to talk to some other piece of equipment on one's necessarily rather primitive home network.

So of course the first abbreviation I ever saw was RTFM. lol i figured that out.

I don't swap text with people on my phones because I live in a dead zone and everyone knows my cell phones almost always go to vmail. As a result, I have no clue what any of the numeric texts mean. They look like a cat leaned on the keyboard :)

I type in full english 98% of the time, but I will occasionally use "btw" and "cya" when IMing (does that phrase count as not full english? :p). When texting I try to use full english, especially since there's a word-prediction program in my phone, but when i'm short for space and/or time i will shorthand a few words like "nite" for night, etc.

This I know, but thankfully I have unlimited texting so I right perfectly fine and get charged equally.

And, though I am not too bothered by 1337 it is very annoying when they mix 1337 with regular letters. I don't even bother reading posts or anything in which they write like that. It is also highly annoying when they use two i's and even more so when they write in mixed capital and lower-case letters! (I cAnT sTanD ThaT!) *shudders* I can't believe I just wrote that. Anyway, I worship Safari for having a Spelling and Grammar check.

It is also annoying when people actually incorrectly spell the word "grammar". Ex. "grammer".
