Okay, genuine question for the responders of this thread. For most of your iPad uses, especially the mobile ones, do you find that those tasks are not possible with the iPhone, or is it just that they're much easier/more pleasant with the extra screen real estate?

I don't have a smart phone for two reasons:

1. I'm near wifi 95% of the time so I have no need to pay for a 3g plan.

2. Most of the stuff I listed doing I have no interest doing on a tiny smart phone screen. I can't stand reading on a screen that small, trying to type on a tiny on screen keyboard, being limited to mobile versions of web sites or doing a ton of scrolling around etc.

I don't know if checking my email as soon as I get up is my first priority.

In the morning, I get up prep a quick breakfast and usually sit down for a few minutes to check email. Then I put my ipad in my bag and go to work. I may write some notes, write some things on my calendar, listen to a podcast, etc while at work. If I go to school, I'll load up my class notes onto my ipad and review them in class. I haven't quite got to note taking in class but plan to soon. I also check my email while at school.

At home, I'll read various websites, email, watch videos, etc. I'm currently learning how to knit and I've been using the ipad to bring up videos that help me review technique. I also got an app that helps you keep track of your knitting projects.

Oh and yesterday I did my federal and state taxes on my iPad :)

Well I don't have an iPhone or any smartphone, I don't see the need for one.

and checking emails and Facebook notifications with that
i play FN and angry Birds games and sometimes use it to listen music with Pandora
i have more than 200 apps on my ipad but i don't use them much

Much easier and more pleasant.

Much, much more pleasant. Browsing the web, reading books, editing docs, watching video. All of it much better on the iPad. Believe me, I tried for a while to ignore my iPad and rely on my iPhone and MBA. Could do it, but missed my iPad dearly.

I do, however, use my iPhone more frequently on the subway and for things like to-dos, expense trackers and taking photos/videos. These are always easier on the go with a pocket-sized device.

Up until last week I used IPHONE for everything I do now with IPAD. of course IPAD is much better for games and movies. I used to read NOOK, now I am selling my NOOK and use IPAD for reading.

yeah ipad is much better you may sell your nook but you shouldn't do same with your I phone :D in fact ipad is not movable enough

What app do you use for this? Haven't gotten my iPad yet but I'm interested in something to help me keep track of our family budget.

I use documents to go in conjunction with DropBox for all of my finances, budgeting, checkbook, credit card tracking as well as any information I wish to have instantly available either in my IPad, droid x or pc's. My iPad has replaced my HP netbook in 80% of it's uses for me. The instant on and true 10+ battery length make it a wonderful tool for me any place I am at.

I'm keeping my Kindle 3.

I read quite a bit and I prefer reading on the Kindle as it's ligher and easier to hold for long periods and the e-ink screen is easier on my eyes. I can read for an hour or so on the iPad (or a computer) with no problems--so it's fine for news, reading pdfs for work etc. But I don't like trying to read on it for several hours when curling up with a novel etc. I prefer the Kindle for that.

I use mine in portrait probably 75% of the time I'd guess. As the bulk of my time goes to reading news and pdfs.

Landscape gets used for web surfing and typing notes in meetings etc. I don't do a ton of surfing as I spend too much time on forums and thus need a keyboard.

Video would be landscape, but I don't do a lot of video. So only other landscape use is a few games that are in landscape.

So this is actually one thing I like better about the iPad than other tablets like the Xoom. I don't like 16x9 widescreen tablets since I use a tablet in portrait so much. The iPad's screen ration is much better for reading in portrait mode etc. than a narrower screen.

I use my iPad as my "official" alarm clock in the mornig. When I wake up, I immediately turn on my Pandora App and either listen to my stations. Not one in particular. just matters how i feel that morning. I then head to the toilet(music still goin) to take my morning drop off and to surf the web a bit and get my news in.

After that(washed hands and all), a little spray for the room, I grab my attire for the day(iPad still in hand), and I head on over to the ironing board to get spiffy. After im dressed and ready to go, I head out for work. Upon arriving to my desk in the morning, I set the pad up for news reading and surfing for the next hour or two. After that, I just leave it up to receive my ESPN score updates, textplus messages, and e-mails.

Im usually off at five and arrive home at about 6. If im feeling like a chef that day, Ill set the iPad up in the kitchen and open up my one of my cook book apps and attempt to not burn the kitchen down. I mostly eat out for dinner (which is unhealthy I know, but i do it anyway) so my kitchens chances of being burned up are slimmer than it may seem. A lot of times, I turn netflix on on the tv and continue some light surfing on the pad. But if Im not in the surfing mood, the pad just sits there yelling out notifications to me. I eventually do some skyping and facetime to my brother who stays in Miami and my friend who lives in atlanta before I hit the hay.

Once I do go to bed, i hit the netflix app on the pad then to continue what I was watching in the living room. My tv went out on me a couple of weeks ago so the pad comes in handy in the bedroom. If i get tired of netflix before I actually fall asleep, ill usually use my TuneIn radio app to listen to quietstorm or my pandora app.

If u havent noticed, there is not one mention of a girlfriend, life partner, wife or any of that nonsense. My iPad is my girlfriend, plus a relationship is another job and Im not one for woking two jobs. And since that job doesnt come with pay checks, I consider it slavery.

On the weekends is when i do my heavy usage. Its a all of what I already mentioned but in a two day period w/o any breaks. LOL. I plan on going back to finish up sschool in the fall, so i imagine my habits or what i actually use the pad for will change a bit. As u can see, I didnt buy the ipad for really creating content. Im more of a consumer which is what the ipad is for anyway mostly right now. I dib and dab with garageband and make a few quick videos every now and then(just for fun mainly) but im definitely a consumer as I imagine most of u are too.

I use to have over 1500 friends on facebook and was a facebook junkie. I realized that wasnt good and decided to delete all my friends that werent either family or really close friends about a month ago. I now have 65 friends. Thats worked out great for me. I never have any news in my news feed anymore. I tweet maybe 6 times a month. Social networking just isnt my thinganymore, at least for the time being. Macrumors is about as social as I get right now.

I use it for a clock at night, so I have it on my nightstand when I wake up. I may check my email on occasion or take a quick look at The Weather Channel app.

I currently don't take it to work.

When I get home, I use it for several purposes and it sometimes changes. I will use it to play music via Airplay/Remote. Check email. Read a magazine using Zinio. Check blogs via Pulse Reader. Read news from a variety of sources. Use it to browse the web. When the weather is nice, I take it outside or to the sunroom and watch Netflix/Slingplayer/or Eyetv. I will log into my desktops using Splashtop Remote. Check my Calendar for the week. Read a book with Kindle app (I also have a Kindle, but mainly use it out in the sun). When we have visitors, I will set it up with the Aquarium app, one of the Koi Ponds, or have it set to use the picture slideshow. I will play Angry Birds on occasion.

I don't do all of the above every night, it just varies with my mood and time. Browsing the web gets most of the time and using it to send or control music gets a lot of time, too. As Airplay capabilities grow (they just added Eyetv), I can see the list of uses evolving.

I usually check the Internet and emails in the morning see if anything exciting happened in the night. Then I go to school sometimes take it if I need it for work. Then when I get home normally a quick look on YouTube and some games. If I've got time then I'll just spend time on the Internet or YouTube but if I haven't then I do the work and before I go to bed a bit more YouTube.
If you are thinking to buy one though I'd say try it for a few days to see if it fits in with your life. Gotta try everything once.

I use mine for everything. Video(Netflix, plex, hulu). Reading, lots of surfing, and gaming. What I have been doing lately is music. With GarageBand, korg, rebirth and a few others, I can almost make complete tracks on the thing.

I'm very active outdoors, and at the gym, so mine sees light use for news, current events, some web browsing. Otherwise I prefer the outstanding keyboard on my new MBP.

When not in forums landscape mode 75% because typing is easier portrait. Wife and I mainly use it for email, web browsing, fb, and I love the news aggregator apps.

Yep! trying out home budget in just a sec.... thanks!

Keep em coming guys. This is great.

I would consider using mine as a big GPS/Navigation tool if someone would come up with a rugged or very safe dock that went in a vehicle. I have a Jeep so it would have to be able to withstand a stiff bumpy ride.

If you searched, you could probably find about 300 threads on how people use their ipads. Seems as if every day someone is questioning the point of an ipad, which prompts everyone to post how they use it.

This thread is great! It's always nice to know all the creative uses for the iPad

- Using goodreader, I make annotations (mostly freehand) to PDFs (for ppt, I just convert to PDF) which is sync'd to DropBox - a folder of which is shared with our department's coordinator/analyst who accesses the files and makes the necessary changes. I then have access to updated files. If need to make edits myself, I use one of the iWork apps and dropDav/dropbox

- My wife and I had twins recently. We needed to track everything (I.e. Diapers, time nursing, etc.) and using paper and pencil seemed ludicrous. Of course they have an app for this - BabyConnect - a complete life saver and an amazing app. We have this app on the iPad and both our iPhones and all entries are sync'd and you can accesss via the web from any computer. Our doctors and nurses were impressed and the summaries and reports are great. I would recommend this app for any new parent - the tracking possibilities are endlesss. If anyone knows of any other apps like this that have seamless syncing to the cloud and attached devices, please let me know (I.e a todo app)

- love that I have access to my books, magazines, and news papers. I mostly use Kindle for books b/c of the seamless access from multiple devices, love Esquire magazine but hope they work out a subscription service (getting separate apps for each issue seems silly), I've cancelled my WSJ paper subscription and use the app and digital subscription, and I love Zite and Pulse. And reading children's books to the kids is great.

- I use it for jotting down quick notes in meetings (I use penultimate)

- I use the camera connection kit to get photos and videos from my iPhone to iPad - works great

- I use instapaper for reading articles on a plane with no wifi

- I sync my calendar with my google calendars (wife, family, holiday, and mine)

- love listening and watching lectures from iTunes U and Ted

- And of course for web surfing - I use safari but looking at other apps for tabs and multiple gesture support - any recommendations?
