aluminum dents, scratches, and scuffs. you didn't know this before you bought it?

What a rediculous post. No, most consumers aren't going to take into acct the physics of Aluminum, probably most think that a huge company like Apple has thought about that for them. You can't honestly be ok with this if it happened to you?

its weird though I had the original ipod mini in baby blue. That was also made of anodized aluminum and after 9 years that thing still LOOKS PERFECTLY NEW.. no dents , scratches, scuffs or anything. I never even worried about it since it felt thick and strong. I kept it on tables, tossed it around, kept it in my pockets, traveled with it, etc.. Never had to worry about it like the iphone 5 which is so delicate and fragile.

this is not my actual mini but it's this model and it looks exactly like this pic after 8-9 years of use

My wife has a pink Mini in much the same condition - but all things being equal - the thickness is different between the two products - the Mini is built like a tank - the iPhone is lighter, much more high-tech. I accept the fact that the iPhone will wear a bit more than the 4/4S my family uses - But take a look at a Samsung after 24 months - golly gee willikers - they look like hell....

Would have, could have, should have . . . The iP5 is what it is, which is unfortunate to some. Most people have very legitimate points.

The options are:

1. Return for a full refund

2. Possibly make an exchange for a better unit

3. Keep the device in its current state

Hopefully, Apple will make note and continue to improve. That is all the consumer has. Other than that, we all have a choice to move on to a different product line.

So my dent was kind of wide and shallow, definitely not a crease (Like I said, I am pretty sure it's an elbow divot). I work in a chemistry lab, and we have some pretty high powered vacuum pumps. I fired one up and stuck the 3/8" inlet of the vacuum tube on the dent and pretty much pulled it out. It's probably not even noticeable to someone who doesn't know it's already there. I showed my wife again today, and she couldn't find it anymore until I pointed out the spot. Something to try...

My black iPhone 5 came out of the box with a tiny dent on the top and a small scuff on the edge. Both were too small to see without really close examination. It would have really worried me if I was using it naked but I put all my phones into otterbox defender cases so I'm not bothered. I actually like the extra width and grip of a bigger case too

i have a question guys so i got my white iphone 5 on launch day and noticed that it had 3 little dents around the bezzel, the power button is loose, and it has the "yellow" screen, i was going to return but i wanted to wait so i could get a better quality one instead of a refurbished one. Well i dropped it by accident yesterday and it has a crack on the top left of the bezzel... will apple still let me exchange the phone for a new one??

Aluminum is not a great material. It is certainly not an improvement over the iphone 4 because of the replaceability. The glass plates are $7 shipped on ebay, and screens are $30 shipped.

The unibody means that it's going to dent and those aren't going to be fixable. Rather than replacing a backplate, you've got to take out all of the components and get a new unibody. It's no good.

Same idea as the macbook pros. All of mine eventually get dented. Every single one.

But we deal with it b/c on balance they're still the best on balance.

I'm almost inclined just to go naked and let it accumulate dents. And just keep on going.

Listen take it Back to apple and have it replaced with a brand new one. Tell em it came out the box like that. That's what I did 4 times.

I keep my iPhone in a case therefore it does not dent at all. Those of you that carry your phone without a small case or any kind of case at all are just looking to get it scratched up. I realize that the new iPhone looks fantastic, it's beautiful, and looks very bold. But that's no excuse not to put it in a case. Some of you, not all, want to carry the iPhone 5 without a case so that you can show to everyone else that you have upgraded. I use this case, it is thin, comfortable, and very slim And provides excellent protection for the phone.

You guys are always complaining about nicks & scratches that you get on your phone from everyday use, that will stop when you get a case. You can always take the phone out of the case when you get home and play with the phone while you're on the couch. Just some food for thought....

I think the issue here is that everyone seems to be acting like we all asked apple to make the pone thinner and lighter, at the exact specs that it has. Yes if we said apple you must make the iphone 7.6mm thin and weigh (whatever) then sure all of your arguments make senses. something has to give.

However I dont know of anyone who insisted on a thinner or lighter phone, at least to the extent we got. What if apple made the phone 8mm and used a stronger material, it would weight a little more also.

Apple doesn't have the thinnest phone anyway the Opo finder or whatever its called is 6.5mm thin so apple can not say its the thinnest anyway, so why not make it a tiny bit thicker and stronger and with the extra space add a little more battery also.

So all of the 'they had to because of the size" arguments are false, it was their choice to make it that size, and so its their fault it dents and bends easily.

I have a feeling that the phone that was going to be released last year but wasnt, had a back like the 3gs only thinner but good old Steves replacement made the choice to use Aluminum instead. Just a hunch.

are you sure Apple didn't its the thinnest iPhone yet? which would be true.

Also I haven't dropped my 5 yet but after having dropped my 4 I noticed that there were scuffs and dents on the aluminum band so I expected the same with the 5.

You should see the scratches and small dent on my aluminium Macbook Pro. I was gonna blame Apple for not using a more durable metal like steel or something but i just put it down to the fact that it gets used like it's a part of me.
The next iPhone should be made from Play-Doh so careless people wont scratch it and they can just re-form it when they drop it and ****!

These threads are getting old. I have had my iPhone 5 since launch and there are no dents, scuffs, or scratches anywhere on the phone and I don't use a case. These people that keep posting that they have dents and scratches and didn't do anything to get them is simply false. You had to do something! The phone isn't just going to get dinged for no reason at all.

lol @ all the fanboys defending Apple.

It was a poor choice of material. Period. And no, aluminum does not have to be so easily dentable/scratchable. There are different grades/strengths. Apple just decided to go with one of a lesser toughness.

I love this phone, but you guys are too much sometimes. Anyone that defends a company for Antennagate or this dent/scuff-gate is ridiculous.

Mr. White ?

I love my phone but I can see after two weeks it is more fragile than my 3GS. Mine took a fall thanks to little one and landed on top left edge exposing the aluminium. A sharpie has fixed it 95% though, its amazing!

Mine looks great. Don't blame Apple because you aren't careful with your phone.

If phone is designed in a way that requires you to be very careful with it, it's a bad design. The consensus on this thread seems to be that aluminum is not an appropriate material for mobile devices. Perhaps that explains why most phones are made of plastic?

I would glady trade the aluminium back for glass and take on the addtional 28g of weight(give or take a few g's). After a few days I would think its hard to notice the change in weight that comes with 28g.

I agree that the 3GS was a tank. The only thing it suffered from was stress cracks by the dock connector.

I spent the entire weekend with mine in my back pocket sitting on it while riding motorcycles. I didn't baby it and it's fine.

Until you drop it and the glass shatters like the 4 and 4S.

I'll take the risk of dropping it and breaking over "oops I bumped into a table with it in my pocket and now there's a dent on the back."

I do agree they need to make this a tad bit more durable although I never had any problems and some ppl are outright harsh, mine also has a rub mark on it just from taking it out of the case and cleaning the front glass. Will be interesting to see if Apple does anything though.

Mine is still flawless but I take care of it: I don't throw it on the table or inside my car. I haven't accidentally dropped it and I don't usually knock doors with it. So... can't really tell.

I didn't ever drop my 4S so I couldn't even compare!
