I have a Trimble Nomad on my desk. It's a PDA made to military specs. I've even seen video of someone scuba diving with one. Here's the problem:
1) the specs are straight out of 2005
2) it is really heavy and kind of bulky
3) it costs upwards of $1400 per unit
4) It runs Windows Mobile
All the testing and engineering for ruggidized products makes them expensive. Battery compartments, lens ports, and dock connections are all points that have to be figured out.
Then you have users that decide that if it is water "resistant" it must be good enough to take swimming. My good old Timex "50m water resistant" watch never made it to 5m before it started leaking.
