2825/336 according to BBR. Roadrunner cable connection but I ran this test off wireless so that's pretty good, considering I'm on a different floor from the 802.11g base station.

Well, I've just signed up for ADSL a few days ago (256/128) so I'll finally be rid of my dialup 56k modem (connecting at 40.7 usually). Broadband here in Australia is still much too expensive.

Luckily where I work (a university) there is a super fast line (not sure what though), but I have to restrain myself as they have started charging us (well, the lab) for bandwidth usage. boo...

Well, my home connection is pretty good. It's cable, and performs decently (although I've never really tried to max it).

However, my college connection was INSANELY FAST!!!

Using bittorrent, I'd sometimes download over one megabyte (!) a second. That's 1000 KB! It was awesome.

However, it was very unreliable. It was prone to cut out for a few minutes at a time, randomly, during peak hours. I am happier with my stable, but much slower by comparison connection.

38.6Kbps :(
I'm assuming you are using a 56k modem - if you are, and it's V.92 compatible, try switching to V.90 mode to see if you get a better connection. If that doesn't help, then you've probably either got interference somewhere in your phone lines, or generally bad phone service. Check with your telephone provider about the interference if you think this may be the cause of slow dial-up connections. You should be getting connection speeds at around 56000 bps.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try that as soon as I get home. Right now I'm soaking up having the world's fastest cable internet at work (or so it seems after home). We're only about 250 feet from the providor so its reeeeeeaally fast.

I'm so jealous!

Its not fair - me and my dad have Optimum Online, which advertise AND HAVE LIVED UP TO 7 MBPS download/upload - but not for us!

my max DL speed is like 300 K and upload is like 500 K

I want to maximize cable modem speed!

I only joined the wonderful world of the intarweb a few years back...

56k (dial-up, duh!)
512k (blueyonder cable)
1mb (blueyonder cable)
2mb (blueyonder cable)
3mb (blueyonder cable)

Even when at friends on 512k ADSL downloading seems very slow, I could never use dial-up again!

How much do you pay for your line

I'm in France and rarely get less than about 3500 down (though only 256 up) from my 5K cable connection. Best thing is that it costs me Euro17.99 a month ($24, or about £12.50) on top of my cable TV subscription.

They've just launched a 20mB service (that's not a typo!) in France for Euro49 a month. I believe in Sweden you can get 100mB for Euro79.99 a month. Any Swedes confirm this???

First off: WOAH! Thread revival!

Well I'm on 4mbit down, 384k up, currently £50p/m. But Telewest have been great, I've had two free major speed bumps in the last year, and I expect that to keep on going ow that ADSL is getting faster.
