actually it will be quiet different...with each person only being able to get their hands on one phone i would think they would not sell out within the hour.

that's how it was last year at AT&T stores....

I guess we are forgetting that last year the phone prices were high and thousands of people turned up and this year the iphones are dirt cheap. So im thinking there will be a lot of people

I hope not cause i wanna get mine! lol

I'd agree in part - and we'll be wading through the browsing folk, and the time-wasting folk to get a chance to try the demo handsets and /or buy the 3G iPhone.
Having seen several teenage groups chat about the iPhone, and also about other smartphones and designer phones, it might become quite mainstream. It'll lose a little mystique and cool through doing so i'd imagine, but then we can accept that, right? hehe

Right Lol

It will be interesting to see in my town. Its a college town of about 50K population but with no AT&T 3G coverage. (Only Sprint currently has 3G coverage here). The nearest AT&T 3G is about 40 miles in either direction. There is one AT&T store.

I would never stand in line, but I am guessing I will get one before the weekend is over. We'll see if that prediction holds true.

also no 3g here yet, and I don't think any stores in my city sold out the first day with last years launch, so I doubt it's going to happen next friday. We plan on going in just before 8 and hopefully the line is not too horrible.

I work around allot of teens and early 20s and most of them do not like the iphone because the "texting sucks". They mostly have blackjacks. I was told by a sales rep that her guess was about 50 at her store mainly because it is being sold in so many countries. You can look at it many different ways, low price vs 2nd gen...3G vs similar OS ...but end the end only the early will be sure to get one the first day. Peace out!!

I was able to get two from the AT&T store last year on iDay

Was it on a family plan last year? Thats what I am gonna have my Wife do this 11th. I have to work, and I am gonna send my Wife and 2 year old daughter down the the ATT store. That way Ill be covered for 2 iphones if they buy the story that the other iphone is for my 2 year old.;) What do yall think? Will it work?

I think you asked this in another thread and most people said no it wouldn't work.

I'm really debating myself whether to go to the nearest Apple store or go to the AT&T store. I have 3 AT&T stores within 2 miles of my house but the nearest Apple is 30 minutes away in a mall....and is ALWAYS packed. I would hate to get all the way down to the mall to find out there was already way too many people and then miss out on the ones at AT&T combined with having to drive 30 minutes back home empty handed. Decisions, decisions...

Do we know for a fact that Apple Stores will be selling the contract phones? As I mentioned in another thread, two or three weeks ago my local store in the UK thought they'd only be selling PAYG.

I'm sure we'll know officially before 11th July.

People comparing Apple stores to AT&T stores need to remember one thing...there are a HELL of a lot more AT&T stores than Apple stores. They have to stock more simply because there are fewer stores to meet demand.

Example: My nearest Apple stores are each about 17 miles away...2 of them...that equates to at the minimum like 45 minute drive unless I go in the middle of the night. Doing a search of AT&T stores results in 15 stores that are within 17 miles of me. Me and my dad's AT&T store, that we plan to go to get our iPhones, is near a major mall in the area. We're pretty sure they'll have plenty to meet demand (they had the original iPhone when people were complaining about stores running out), but we also know there are like 5 more within a 10 minute drive that we can check as well or 15 more before we even get close to an Apple store.

They also have an idea of demand based on how many current iPhone customers there are. They can figure in a certain percentage of people who won't upgrade...then they add on a nice margin for new customers and figure out how many they need. They have solid numbers to base their distributions of iPhones on....unlike last year. They do market research like crazy not only to find out what people want in their phones but also how many people will want a particular phone. There's no point in making a million iPhones if only 200k will pick them up. You almost never hear about shortages on second time around offerings because of those hard numbers.

In fact I bet this time around there will be too many iPhones on the market. There's a lot of people going "meh" at the new version as it doesn't offer a whole lot and will actually cost more for some people (not me since I'm dropping text messages). They are hyping the hell out of it but I bet a certain portion of their current customers are just going to say "why should I?"...I bet they are overestimating the number of people that are going to upgrade.

I think I'll just 'casually' hit my :apple: store on my lunch break; if they have them excellent, if not I can wait since I have an iPhone now. I'm just thrilled that the 2.0 software will be on our "Legacy" iPhones too!

There should be interesting stories of people having to woo their boss, having got into a queue and starting to get served, but running later, and going over lunch time hours (if they have such a thing, some work places are more flexible)...
Forewarned is forearmed - equip yourself with knowledge of what Apple and iPhone 3G can do for your business ;)

My AT&T Store Rep told me I could bring in my kids they said it is per person in line. Not what age they are. Since you have to activate them I don't think this will be a huge deal.

I'm actually hoping it's possible to order one online on Friday. If so and the online stock holds out, I'd rather do that than wait in line.

I'm going to try to get one on Friday, but if the lines are too long, I won't bother. I can wait a bit.

I bet plenty of people will call in "sick" friday for this... ;) Depending on which side of the fence I fall off of, I may be just "slightly late"... :D

my local AT&T told me to call tomorrow night and theyll tell me how many iPhones they have. ill go in as early as i can get a ride. (living with the GF's family this summer)

There will be no sell out at any store.
You are definitely wrong. I stopped at an AT&T store this evening. He said they have 30 phones (split evenly among the possible choices). I can guarantee they will sell that many; it's in a pretty big city. He said they're supposed to have more Saturday, and he's been telling people to either get a tent, or just come Saturday.
