Okay, so let's say I don't want to UPGRADE my Mac Pro but rather want to put in the second (now missing ;o) 2.8 GHz CPU into it (at least I was told that the socket for the second CPU is there) ... Does this make sense??? Problem is, where can I get the CPU PLUS the Mac Pro cooler???

Not now, and maybe never. But tell us, over than a desire for what you don't have, how is your single processor Mac Pro holding you back from doing the things you need (maybe even "want") to do?

May our Macs live forever!

Just to put it into perspective; I had been using my old PM9600 for ten years before replacing it. I replaced the CPU, disabled a L1 cache resistor on the mobo to enable the L2 cache on the G4 CPU, maxxed out the RAM, got rid of the SCSI drives and put ATAs, Sonnet tempo trio card, 32mb video card and two DVD burners. It still ran 10.4.10 when I donated it to my GF's classroom for her so she can edit audio for her dance class that she teaches at the H.S. I just sold my 6 yr old Powerbook g4 1mghtz to a friend for $600 (also maxxed out)and I miss it too! So what I am trying to say is that a new Mac Pro in my opinion will last me another 10 years, before I absolutely have to get a new one. Maybe in 5 years I will sell it, but I doubt it if I can do similar upgrades over time like my old trusty 9600. Let's just hope that they can support upgrades and not change sockets (like they did on G3s with the ZIFs) too soon.

The way I see it... it will certainly still make a pretty damn good server when I'm done using it as a workstation. Can't really go wrong with 8 Xeon cores and room for 32GB of RAM and 4 internal hard drives.

Probably could last more than 10 years, its just the question of do you want to own something for that long when there are newer toys out!
