I have heard of companies out there that you can hire to do nothing but promote your app and get it onto that list, no matter how bad it is. I think they should divided the app store in to 3 parts. Useful or good apps, apps that are extensions to businesses (ie Sears, Disneyland) and crAPPS.

It would be nice (for both customers and developers) for Apple to figure out a way to derate the popularity and/or visibility of apps with too high a paid marketing to app quality ratio, some scheme that is both scalable and that couldn't be gamed. But I'm not holding my breath.

Right now I have a couple of apps (each @ .99$) with free/lite versions. I make about 100$/month. One of them is a Mastermind game. And the other is a StarCraft 2 fan application. Most of my 100$ comes from that fan app. So yes, you can break even but I would suggest the first thing you do is make a simple application like a SC2 Fan app. That way you at least make a return on your dev license. Then you can proceed to do more fun stuff. Like building games.

i would be very happy if i could get ~100$/month from an app xD.

but an SC2 fan app ? is that legal ? i thought you can't use images, and stuff of copyrighted material and that kind of stuff in apps ?

That is indeed illegal to do.
I have a fan application of CSS for the iPad (check my signature).
It took me 3 Months of legal discussions with the owners of counter strike to launch my application with a bunch of rules I have to follow, (Apple rejected because they thought I didn't own the stuff, so you're lucky).
I could only launch my app if:
- It was free
- It was a tribute
- There are no sounds of the game in
- I had to remove the CSS Guys from the logo (i had another logo at first)
- I took all of the screenshots myself
- The 3D models I had someone made it, because i wasn't allowed to use it otherwise.

etc and etc.
So therefore, it's actually not allowed to ask money for your fan app :)

No it's not illegal because Blizz has a fan art pack. That's free for public use called the "public domain".
