Facepalm. Really? I just double checked and an 8GB upgrade on Apple is $200. Last I checked, $200 is a heck of a lot more than $40 and it wouldn't seem logical for Apple to upgrade the RAM and not try and get the money they have been getting for it.

Falcepalm indeed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231342

I've had USB3 and it honestly isn't that exciting. I'll stick to FW. I'm going to let you sit there and think about answering your question. Assuming that the optical drive remains, like you say, is 128GB really enough for the average user? My gf has 300GB worth of documents, programs, music, and pictures. This is a laptop, she's not going to want to carry around an external drive anytime she wants to access these items. My grandma isn't going to either, nor anyone else I know. But let's argue that there is always the cloud and that eliminates the need for us to store anything on the computer. There are a lot of people who use computers and do not connect to the internet all the time. I'm a heavy user because of my audio programs and even I don't want to use the cloud for anything besides documents.

Transfer rates from USB3 are 5 GB/s. FW800 is capped at 800 mb/s. For reference, thunderbolt is 10 GB/s and usb 2.0 is 480 mb/s. Keep in mind that's megabits, not megabytes. Divide by 8 to get megabytes/gigabytes.

Do you really need 300 gb of pictures everywhere you go, or just at home where you would have access to an external drive? To me, the speed boast of an ssd is worth it.

The Facepalm was to your reference of a $40 upgrade thinking it would be something that Apple would pass on to consumers. I thought that was an idiot proof statement. I'm very well aware I can go to Newegg and purchase it on my own. IF it is a 2012 MBP speculation thread and we are talking about them putting in 8GB of RAM, wouldn't it be common sense that Apple would price that accordingly? Is that just above common sense guys?

USB 3.0 in every instance that I have used it was weak. We were lucky to get 120MB/s average. More often then not <80MB/s on multiple different machines and external devices. Thanks for the elementary math lesson, I know the difference between bit and byte.

Not sure where you got 300GB of pictures alone. Let me requote my previouse statement for you, "300GB worth of documents, programs, music, and pictures." So, reread that quote and then get back to me on whatever point you were trying to make in that last paragraph please.

Apple may be charging $200, but that doesn't mean you can't find it cheaper elsewhere.

If this is a MBP 2012 speculation thread and people are stating it might be bumped up to 8GB of RAM...wouldn't it make sense that Apple would charge MORE if they upgraded it in the next product instead of not passing along that cost to consumers? I didn't think this was that difficult of a statement to process. I don't care if I can go to Newegg and buy it. This is talking about a MBP from Apple. Last I checked, Newegg doesn't make and price Apple MBP.

Just a minute there big guy. Let's do the math. Firewire 800 mb/s has a THEORETICAL MAXIMUM LIMIT of 100 MB/s. USB3 has a THEOREGICAL MAXIMUM LIMIT of 640 MB/s. You say that USB3 gets a REAL LIFE AVERAGE of 120MB/s. Which sounds faster to you?

You see...back when 4 gb became standard, 4 gb was cheap and 8 gb was really expensive and no one needed it. Now, 8 gb is cheap and 16 gb is really expensive and no one needs it. See the trend?

Only time will tell

I like this spec, and I love that ultra-thin mock-up!

what about Ms Siri?

Rather than voice command, Ms Siri picks up brain waves, thus negating the need for magic gestures, mouse, track pad, keyboard!

i like this idea the best
so tell em how will this work design wise.. will we have a keyboard in case mistakes occur, or will it be a dual touch screen , like one of those acer iconia [the ones with two screens, i forget teh name]

Because I definitely said that 120MB/s was average with what we were getting. Please read what I actually state instead of throwing words in there. Not sure what theoregical is either. Maybe your caps made it difficult to type? I don't care which one sounds faster, in MY experience with USB 3.0 I have yet to see it perform at a level that I expected it to. Maybe reread and comment on what I actually said.

Not necessarily. Apple has a trend of incremental upgrades where they charge the same amount of money for more storage, more CPU speed, more RAM, etc. Does it mean they will go to 8 GB with the next model? No. Does it mean they might? Sure. Your statement was extremely easy to process, you're just limiting your thinking.

There's been little or next to none speculation.

I plan on buying the 2012 MBP and want to hear peoples opinions. As it's coming up to December now.

There's like 10 threads here that discussed it just in the last week. Bottom line is that there are a lot of things that people would like or not like to see, but nobody really knows.

The new intel chip will reduce power consumption, a little CPU performance increase and a better integrated GPU. What apple will do with this is very unclear.

Time will tell and yeah true, I'll have the money by March. I'm not sure whether a redesign would be worth it, but we'll see.

It's interesting to see people's opinion on the subject.
Personally I'd dislike it if the MBP started looking more as the MBA.
I'm not a big fan of that look, just looks so fragile.

In the end, we'll find out in at the release.

the first revision of a new design usually has some minor issues. If they push out a new design, i would prob wait until the next refresh anyway.

I'm holding out hope they keep the 13" Pro, but finally give it discrete graphics. I think it's possible if they eliminate the optical drive. I agree that a MBP without optical and without dedicated graphics would be redundant, but I hope they go the dedicated graphics route rather than cutting the machine. I think there'd be a lot of demand for a portable (13") machine with actual graphics capabilities...

The Mac mini gives me hope that this is the route Apple will take. No optical drive + dedicated graphics could show the future of the 13" Pro. I wouldn't be shocked by models that closely resemble the current minis (entry-level with Intel graphics, more expensive one with AMD).

Did I just hear you put 'gamer' and 'pro' in the same line?

Not everyone understands these things. Someone using this for work may have come from or use this to supplement a desktop machine which is entirely different from a gamer whose concerns are more related to graphics but still depend on adequate storage for games (some of which are quite large).

I thought the air was top selling?

Where did you read that? It sounds like speculation in the way it's worded there.

8 gb of ram is ~$40. There is no excuse not to have 8 gb standard in a $2000 computer. With USB3 and firewire 800 in ivy bridge, there's no reason not to use external drives for large-scale storage. Does the average user really need more than 128 gb with them on the go? Also, the optical drive will probably remain, so you can always mod it to have a 2nd hd.

I totally agree with you. The way they're priced should include a certain amount of standard features.

It's cheaper if you do it yourself but some people must be paying Apple $200 for it. It's kind of awkward how they still charge that much for ram when they have you locked into a a high minimum sale already.

2012 macbook pro GPU update

have the latest 2011 15" 2.5GHz
oc the GPU to 800/950 stable. however i still cannot enjoy the games at decent settings at 1680x1050 :(

Crysis Warhead
Wither 2

(i don;t want to play these games at medium/low settings. they can look so gorgeous, i don't want to play it crippled. i want to enjoy the visuals)

a bit disappointed. what is the best graphics the 2012 could get ? considering current TDP.

You should really buy a gaming PC.

2012

There is a significant distinction between the MBP and the MBA. Unfortunately the non pro users are adding the the confusion as how they would like to see the new MBPs. There are numerous voices of people who bought or are planning to purchase an MBP, where they want to strip it from the optical disk, or FW. Those people are nothing more than gadget geeks wanting for no practical reason, other than bragging, some sort of latest, fastest, smallest, device. The MBP need to retain the optical drive for all practical purposes, it needs to have FW connectivity to existing storage systems, it needs to retain a robust construction with a current modularity. It can of course undergo the typical improvements of better graphics, new generation processors, added connectivity, etc. The 13 inch is an important field production model for many users and it would be sad to see it go in the current mechanical and features configuration. People in the image and sound field acquisition segment would certainly not like to see it go to a lesser form. What some are missing is that perhaps the "pro" designated label is there for a reason. Otherwise, and for the pseudo pros you have the MBA and the iPad.
