my anecdotal tale, after reading your posts today. pissed about long time zero coverage, hollywood hills area. moved a few blocks up the street, still no coverage one bar ( meaningless ) on my iphone3g and worse still, getting text messages in the middle of the night, sent earlier but only received once network is less busy. again, useless.

read your post, called att csr to establish issue 5/28/11 12:30 pm pst. csr made notes suggesting that (a) "they" might be willing to offer some credit apart from the standard mail in $100.00 MIR that we all know of, and that the att retail clerk would be able to read the CS notes and with manager approval possibly make something happen. also that (b) with my level of understanding of the issue, being a multiple services att customer, i'd probably be successful in my atempt to get one of these MCELL devices free of charge or at the very least, credit the $150.00 back on my wireless side of my att bill(s!).

1:00 pm PST 5/28 go to att store, and explain my issue and att clerk says, "oh, they are now $199.00" to which i reply, "well, i was actually looking to get this at no charge given my zero coverage area", - this, in what is arguably one of the most populated metro areas in the western hemisphere!-

to which she replies, "oh, ok no problem, i'm going to make an exception to our policy", and proceeds to go get me one of the MCELL devices and login to my att account read notes, make notes whatever, and setup my shiny new mcell.

in summation: no charge MCELL within one hour start to finish, after finding this site and calling/going to att retail location.

great advice, and proof positive that these CAN be had at no charge. well done! thanks. ( now, if only it will work! )

final thought, these are the steps i took, and neglected to mention. while i did NOT make any threat to leave att, i DID make certain that any correspondence/notes taken be fowarded to the "customer retention" dept.
saying this is tantamount to an implied threat to leave, but "less is more" when dealing with this stuff. imho.

Addendum: now after having this MCELL properly connected and mesing around with it AND att CS it refuses to get a gps lock and i'm told that CS level two or whomever will contact me by 6/1? to "assist" and troubleshoot my trouble ticket. i guess you really do get what ya pay for. sheesh.
