i care not for watched that are expensivo.....the maximum i spent on a watch was about £50. and that was one with a velcro strap, 100m water resistance, and a dual display (analogue / digital). i needed one which could withsatnd being worn all the time, as well as a few knocks. i like it.

if you buy a rolex, you will worry about it too much IMO. but they aaare nice:D

i personally am not too fond of watches, however my dad is a watch guy. and for him dressing up isn't complete without a nice time piece.

a tag is good since your just leaving grad school you dont wanna get into debt just to tell the time.

but from the watches my dad has, my favorites are his pateks and his constantines. those are great time pieces. but not that practical since they cost a fortune.

id go with tag or oris
bvlgari makes nices faces and bodies - too but rather pricey

make sure you get an automatic watch, nothing with battery haha

for some reason i don't have an eye for watches.

I can't tell if a watch is hundreds, a few thousands, or $20 at walmart. I don't know why I can't tell... i just don't notice the subtleties i guess

I'm not a big watch guy, I just use my phone or iPod for the time. My grandfather is a big watch guy though. I like the ones he wears, most of them are Vacheron Constantin.

I couldn't care less about a watch, on myself or others. I use my cellphone as my watch, and it serves the purpose just fine, thank you. I might notice a fancy or expensive watch on somebody if they flashed it at me, but it would only strike me as "What a waste of money". So, no, I don't think a nice watch is important. And I am a 53-year old male who could afford just about anything I want. I just don't think it is important.

EDIT: And just think about it, a fancy watch is more likely to make you a prime target for muggiing!

Something stylish, contemporary, stream-lined, and professional looking would be nice. But a watch someone wears isn't such a huge thing.

And GREAT congratulations on getting your PhD. That's very awesome.

I always notice what kind of watch people are wearing, but I love watches and have a few.

The thing about nice watches is that they are well made and will last for decades to come, they don't scratch or break. So in you're looking to get a nice watch save your pennies and get a really good one. If you wear a particular watch a lot then get it fully serviced and cleaned every 5-8 years, it's worth the money as they come back looking like new.

This is my favourite watch, bell & ross. Beautifully made in rose gold and carbon. Timeless style. Looks good with a dark suit or dark casual clothes.

For casual wear wear I prefer an omega seamaster planet ocean, it's got a wonderful retro look.

Mont Blanc make nice watches too, but I don't have one, yet anyway.

I like Seiko Watches right now. My last one lasted 7 years before the Kinetic stopped working so I got a new one. Here is a pic of it.

When I finish college, I will get nicer watches like Tag and Tissot

For me a watch is a tool, if the watch works, then it is good. So IMHO, having a nice watch isn't really all that important.

...or maybe I just say that because I can't afford a nice watch?

Having a nice watch is very important. How many times do you see men in business suits looking nice and professional and then when they go to check what time it is on their watch, it is a cheap plasticky black Casio digital watch for $50 or so? Looks so not right but it happens often. A true man should have at least 3-4 different watches. One for wearing with suits, fancy parties, one for everyday use, one for work, and one sporty one (not cheap Casio).

If you guys are looking for middle of the road watches that aren't too flashy, Nixon makes some nice, understated models.

Granted, some are ugly as sin, but some of them are pretty nice.

I love nice watches. I define nice as around $150, looks the way I want and is well made. To me a watch is machinery, and like all machinery there are many levels of style and quality from which to choose.

From your post it sounds like you'd like a nice looking quality time piece but nothing extravagant.

Personally, I love the 2 Invicta watches I bought back in 1996. They are both 21 jewel automatic movement cost less than a total of $230 w/ shipping, and I get lots of compliments on them...though I must admit many of these compliments come from pretentions jerks who only really want to show me their Rolex or Audemars Piquet.

Here's a pic of the one I could find online easily (the other seems to be a discontinued model I can't find)

Thanks for all the feedback!

I'm glad to see there are so many different opinions out there on this; I'm not missing some huge obvious fact of life, I guess.

I'll definitely check out the links that are mentioned here and see what I come up with. If it's worth mentioning I'll make an update here to the thread. Tissot looks pretty nice; I've had an eye on them before and will take a closer look.

Cheers.

I tend to notic if and what watch people are wearing. I think for dressing up a watch is a must. Sadly my dress watch has been broken for a while and I been meaning to side it in to Citzen to get it repair. I have gone watchless when I dress up at times now because my daily watch just does look good for dressing up.
That being said I do notic if people are wearing a watch and I do think they are imporant. I have trouble figuring out how people get though the day with out one on but then agian I have been wearing a watch 24/7 since I was in 3rd grade which means almost 15 years now. Plus so much in todays world revolves around time and being in certian places and certain times.

I think a watch really adds to the how some one looks. The wrong watch distraces and not having one just takes everything down a notic.

For me idal is to have 3-4 main watchs
daily beater watch for 24/7 wear (Timex or my Gshock)

Dress watch (high end like my Citzen but not good for daily wear

Casual watch. Something inbettween the 2. Pretty much it can be woren setting but for sports or working out. It doesnt really add much to a look but it not going to distract like the beater would. and not something you sleep in. This t he the watch I currently lack and would want.

now any to all of those can be high end watchs that cost 200+ easy but it all in how that look. After I get my casual watch I could easily be pushing 600+ in just my main 3 watches but none of them are flashy and I dont wear them showing off. firstly I wear a watch for time keeping and 2nd to add to the total look of what I am wearing if it matters. A watch should never be a forcal point of a out fit. It more just an accent and those should never stand out or tryed to be pointing out.

i only notice when the watch is too fancy/shiny
golden watches are a big no, no for me

nowadays most people i know are carrying their mobile phones and use them for time

personally i normally get through the day without or i carry my mobile phone .. my 2 watches are essentially collecting dust in a drawer compared to my father who is collecting them
and when i carry the watch yo uare looking on it way too much and thus times goes slower ;)

Not very important I think... unless you're overly materialistic.

The thing with TAG's and Breitling's etc... is that I always assume they're fake, such is their ubiquity. :p

So, my question to girls and guys here on MR is, how much do you actually notice what kind of watch a person has?

Sorry, I'm just not that shallow. It all stems to an event years ago. I was in California, LA, near Rodeo Drive, at a party. The only thing people looked at where what everyone was wearing. My shoes were NOT acceptable, turns out. (For my reaction see this reference: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=2438084&posted=1#post2438084)

Don't buy things to impress others, buy it because you want it.

I'm not a shill for Amazon, but I was shocked at their watch prices. I wanted a decent Seiko, and the jewelry stores in my area all wanted $450-500 for the watch. I was surprised to find that were advertised sales 20-40% off, so I decided to check online. Found my watch on Amazon for $225-250.

Moral of the story, shop around. Jewelry can be horribly overpriced.

And this is what I bought:

I come from the creed, every man should have a good watch.

I really want a Tag, but they are a little pricey for me.

I do like Seiko, Citizen, they make pretty good watches.

Right now I have a Gshock and a fossil that I wear. Mainly because I can scratch those up and not have to worry about it. I have a rolex that I inherited that I have only wore twice, graduation and wedding. It remains in a safe deposit box (thanks dad).

I can't wait to hand down the rolex and hopefully tag to my son when he gets old enough. it's kind of like a good pocket knife. I carry a pocket knife that my dad got from his dad that he used in WWII. gets sharpened every week and i could literally shave with it.

Thanks for the Amazon tip, I hadn't thought about looking there. I found something that looks pretty nice, and Amazon has a crazy discount right now. It allegedly retails for $2100, and they have it for $600. It's a Gevril GV2; has anyone heard good things about this brand? Here's a picture.
