I am planning on switching to AT&T when the next-gen iPhone comes out and was wondering how does upgrading work on AT&T? Is it usually 12 months into the contract when you are eligible to upgrade or do you have to wait the entire 24 months before you are eligible for upgrade pricing?

AT&T has said in the past that they determined the eligibility by how much you spend with them.

AT&T will let a user who has an Unlimited Voice plan ($99 per mo) upgrade 12 months into their contract versus the person who has a regular phone with the $39 voice plan, that person must wait 22 months into their contract before they can upgrade.

But AT&T has treated iPhone users different (in the past) and has allowed iPhone owners to upgrade once they have completed at least 12 months into their contract and your bill has been paid up to date. This year could be different, so wait till Monday to have a for sure answer.

3 of my fiends got a family plan together last year all new contracts and got the 3GS on launch...

the main line is Eligible for a full upgrade this month, the other 2 have to wait until 2011

so yea depends on how much u spend

I am eligible for a cheaper iPhone and I signed up in April '09. So I'm about 14 months in. No unlimited plan, except for data, which I'm keepin.

The Primary can upgrade every 12 months on that line if it is over $100 a month. Otherwise it is 20 months.

I understand that you pay more every month into the primary lines than the add a lines but my main line isn't due for an upgrade until 17 months and the others 2 are 20 months. My monthly bill is $195.

I don't see how others are getting 12 month upgrades. I called 611 and Fan business # and they said that they are not allowed to move upgrade dates forward. True or false?

When you say primary lines can get 12 month upgrade is that "partial" or "full" upgrade?

True. They could always credit your account or waive the activation fees. That's about it.

Full upgrade every 12 months. Our bill comes out to be 202 a month.

My line, the primary is 80.00 for the 1400 minutes, 30 for unlimited text and 30 for data. So 140 minus about 20 for FAN. So mine is 120. Other two are 40 each, both iPhones.

I have a FAN discount of 22%. 3 iPhones, 3 Data plans, 1400 minutes, 200 text on each phone.

I'd like to know how to get a full upgrade from AT&T ever 12 months! I wonder if I'm just going to have to call 611 over and over until I get an answer.

This is not true (see below)

But this is true. I should know since my bill is $99.98 before taxes, and I’m not eligible until after the standard 20 months (all because of two friggin’ cents!).

Well lets calculate it out..

80.00-22%= 62.4+30 for data +5 for text. thats only 97.4 That is why you don't get it every 12 months. If your bill was another 2.6 dollars on your line you would get it.. Tax doesn't count.

so my main line is $64+$30+$5... I don't get 12 month upgrade over $1... lol

been a customer since '98 and I overpay $50 a month towards the next bill. Guess I'm not a good customer

Like others have said, it depends also on how much you spend per month.

Back in April, I changed my featured so that my total features before taxes and other charged were over $100. Within a week after paying that bill, my eligibility date changed from 11/20 to 6/20. After that month, I decided I really didn't need 900 minutes so I changed it back to the 450 minute plan. As soon as I made that payment, my eligibility date changed back to 11/20.

I have two other iPhones that are eligible so I am not too worried about not getting an iPhone this month.

Right at midnight my I became eligible for a FULL upgrade! lol

I wasn't going to get an upgrade until October on 2 of my lines. Now all 3 are eligible!! w00h00

$99 for Voice, but once you add a $30 ($25) data plan and some Text Messages for the iPhone, then you'll be good.

for anyone who is curious if your currently eligible for an upgrade with AT&T, dial *639# in your phone, and in seconds you'll get a text message response like the post above mine. I am :D

I have an update to my post above. I mentioned that I changed my rate plan back to the 450 minute plan after one month of having the 900 minute plan. Once I changed back to the 450 plan, my eligibility date changed back to 11/20. As of today, I am now eligible instead of 6/20 or 11/20. I now have three iPhones that are eligible. On the OLAM and *630# both show I am eligible. Mine changed around midnight or so.

This is what I got:

I got it too, but I'm not eligible till December! Woot!

I am totally stoked now! I thought was gonna have to wait until December 2nd.. Then have to think about upgrading or waiting till the following June..

My upgrade date also changed as of midnight :D It now shows I'm upgrade eligible NOW. I'm so excited, it was October before!

Edited to add: My bill is $104 WITH tax and fees, so I don't think price of bill is the only factor.
