I'm a secondary line on a 1400 minute family plan with a FAN discount. I got my 3GS at launch, and I don't qualify for an upgrade until 2/19/2011. However, one of my friends is a secondary line on 1400 minute plan that doesn't get a FAN discount. She got her 3GS a few weeks after I got mine, and she already qualifies for an upgrade.

I didn't realize that receiving a FAN discount can significantly affect your upgrade eligibility that much.

Because it lowers your monthly spending.

No, having a National Account Discount (NAD aka FAN) is not part of the MRC calculation. Any discount is applied after the calculation.

I would suggest that you check with your friend again. 99.99% chance they are really the "Primary" line on the FamilyTalk rate plan.

Actually, I completely forgot that the second 3GS was actually purchased using the upgrade for a different line on the account, and that line isn't upgrade eligible until March 2011, which now makes sense, since it's a month after mine. So, the upgrade eligibility time frame for his non-FAN account is actually the same as my FAN account.

Would this work?

So I have two lines on my account. I have the primary and my brother has the secondary. I'm eligible for the upgrade to the iPhone 4 and he isn't until April 2011. What we're thinking of doing is canceling his line and turning my account into an individual account. Then, he'll start his own contract. Would this allow him to get the promotional price?

Yes, but you'll pay the ETF for cancelling his line. But this is most likely your cheapest solution.

We decided to buy one at the discounted price and buy the other at full price and split it. Since we have discounts on the family plan, it'll actually save us money over going to individual plans. Thanks for all of your input!
