I think you've misunderstood. If you bought your 3G last summer then you should be eligible for subsidized pricing from at&t RIGHT NOW. I bought my 3G last summer and I just got the 3GS for $199. Double check how much it will cost you to upgrade through the Apple store.
As for my 3G, I went with buymytronics.com. My $218 check is on its way. Nothing like a faster phone + some cash!

I don't know how you got the subsidized price, but for me it says I have to wait till 2010 to upgrade for $199. If I want to upgrade before that, I have to pay $500 for the 16 GB and $600 for the 32 GB. I've checked the Apple store and texted to check my upgrade eligibility, and that is what it says.

Yeah. Here is my upgrade message.

Well you're lucky, I bought my 3G at launch, and I'm not eligible in a month. :( By the way, that image isn't working for me.

I bought my 3G last July, upgraded to the 3GS this friday for the $299 price (32 GB Black), and sold my 3G jailbroken with 3.0 for $350 on craigslist yesterday.

Then I guess I'm being screwed over by AT&T? I bought my 3G last year in July at launch just like you guys, but I'm not eligible for the upgrade pricing. What gives?
Not really, it just means that you don't throw money at AT&T.

What rate plan do you have and do you spend more than $99 for your voice + data plan (only), shared features and Early nights and weekends don't count?

The basic handset Upgrade Eligible is based on the Monthly Recurring Cost (MRC) of each line on an account. Did you read the announcement?

It really explains the things that would allow a current customer that ALREADY was eligible for July / Aug / Sept 2009 upgrade date. These customers were all customers that are spending more then $99 on their primary line for voice + select data. The MRC is a 3 month rolling calculation. As a reminder, no secondary lines on a FamilyTalk rate plan will qualify.

I wasn't eligible till September, but I wasn't going to pay an extra $200 for three months' worth of iPhone ... so I added a line. Luckily, my mom needed a cell phone and plan, so I'm just going to give her my old phone. This works out well, because she gets a free phone, and a cheaper plan than she could have gotten otherwise, and I get my iPhone :)

Well I'm on a family plan, but on my line I believe I pay $39.99 for 450 minutes, and $30 for the unlimited data plan. I also pay $20 for unlimited text messages, but I don't know if that would matter considering it's only voice and data. So without unlimited text, that's about $70 a month on my line. So I guess that means I'm not eligible for an upgrade 12 to 18 months in, but should it really be all the way in March? I was thinking it would be closer to December or January.

You might want to double check that your line is the primary line on your FamilyTalk rate plan. There have been many posts from customers that wondered why their upgrades for so far out and then they found out that their line was not the primary line but had been moved to a secondary (add-a-line) when another phone was activated on the FamilyTalk rate plan.

Just look at you billing statement and if your line does not have all but $9.99 of the FamilyTalk rate plan then you are not the primary line. BTW, I don't think there are any FamilTalk plans at 450 minutes and $39.99. The lowest is the FamilyTalk 550 rate plan for $59.99 for the first 2 lines.

You might want to check that you don't really have a $9.99 add-a-line and a $30 iPhone data plan = $39.99.

this is very unusual for me but i will be keeping my 3G, I really don't feel like i should upgrade unless they cosmetically change the phone.

I haven't got a chance to check my bill yet, but I will post what I find out when I do get a chance to check it. Sorry for not saying anything for a few days.

I waited in line on Launch Day to get the first ("classic") iPhone in 2007; last year I again waited in line on Launch Day to get my 3G. This year, on Launch Day I went over to the store, stood in line for a surprisingly short time, then had fun looking at and playing with the new 3G S⃣ but didn't buy one at that time because they didn't have the color/capacity I wanted and also I'd already seen on MR that there were activation problems. Since I was happy enough with my 3G I figured I'd just wait a few days.... On Wednesday I went into the store again and this time DID buy the new phone, a lovely white 32 GB one. My eligibility for the subsidy was December 12, 2009, and so subsequently I paid $499.00 for the new iPhone. I had thought about it for a while and realized that I'd rather pay a little extra now and have the fun of using the 3G S⃣ for six more months rather than waiting until December. This way I'll have a year into my contract when the NEXT new iPhone appears in 2010......

I am not. I am waiting for another year to upgrade when the next iPhone is released
I was going to hold out myself. But then I started hearing how much faster the new model is. That, more than any of the new features, is what is strongly tempting me to run to the Apple store to pick one up.

im sneaky... my mom and dad dont care about their phones. so theyre both eligible for upgrades. bought the phone. had my buddy at best buy cancel the plan right then and there.
