One does occasionally find a person that buys a phone with plans to keep it for its natural life ;)

I've had my 4 since launch day, and it has a smattering of tiny hairline scratches on the back, nothing on the camera lens, and nothing on the screen. I scoop a little clod of dust out of the dock connector every month or so, but other than that, the little bugger's in really great shape. No case, no protectors, just using it like a regular phone.

Incidentally, this is my second iPhone - I upgraded to it from my 4GB 2G that I got back in 2007. Nearly three years that little guy lasted me with no case. It had its share of little scratches, the plastic bottom of the back had been polished smooth by my pocket, and it had a couple of little spots where I had dropped it a few times, but it too still looks pretty good for three years of being toted around and used.

It's always the first scratch that hurts a bit, the thing that ruins the 'perfection' of the device. After that though, you don't feel so bad about the subsequent ones. And really, with a device like the iPhone, it's made to be touched, to be felt, and to feel *good* in your hand. Putting cases, covers, and protectors on it takes away that feeling. It always seemed a little silly to protect the feel of a device like that by never touching it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Use it like you would any other phone and you'd get more enjoyment out of it than covering it up with various condoms and then selling it to the next lucky guy.

legion,

where did you get the back protective covering?

Here is a great FULL BODY FRONT, BACK AND BOTH SIDES clear film protection for the iPhones, iPads, iPods and all MacBook lines:

I just got a replacement from Apple due to something weird happening with my screen recently. I've been thinking about rocking it without a case since were semi-close to the iPhone being refreshed again. :)

Which made me wonder: how long have you guys been using your iPhones without a case? Any problems/blemishes/scratches? Have you dropped it?

I'm talking about 100% case free which also means no screen protectors. Hows it held up?

Ok, using the word "rocking" to mean wear or pull off makes me want to vomit!

Hmmm, I currently have an Incase Snap in smoked and while it's a nice case and very thin, everytime I play with the display models at an Apple store I really like how the glass/steel combo feels but the damn thing is slippery as hell :(

not as slippery as the 1st gen iPhone though, that thing was a bar of soap. :(

I don't like the case either but I agree... the thing is extremely slippery. Anyhow I use this case and I really like it. Give it a shot - it's pretty cheap too.

I love the feel of it naked but it's pretty slippery. I use protector front and back, for case use bumper or power support Air jacket.

All in all these phones last longer than anything we were used to pre-iPhone but certainly lose their looks after a year.

I did have a proper sleeve, but lost it somewhere and have it naked now. Haven't dropped it yet and make sure I keep it in my pocket with nothing else to prevent scratches.

I use a microfibre lined sock since may '10. No scratches, no dust in either of the sockets.

My iphone4 does not ring!

I accidently slid the button on the left side.:(
That displayed a bell..i am guessing that's what did it..

slide it back and it should work!
DUH!!!!
:D

I ROCKED (had to say it) it with the just the zagg shield first only, and did a really good job on drops until it met a sidewalk curb, then had a litlle chip on the steel and that's when I decided to go all naked! Was good for a while but def comes up with many tinny scratch's the my screen cracked! Thankfully apple has the best customer service with there stores so I got it replaced, 3 times, naked is def dangerous! I kept very good care of my device but this thing is slippery! My screen cracked every time when I was getting out of a car and the iPhone would be in my lap and smash!

I have learned my lesson if I want to keep it perfect, witch I do, I must have the sreecn protector and a case just took me a while to find one I truly liked. Even tho I love the form factor and love showing it it feels much better and secure with the case and screen protector.

My curent one is flawless and I want to keep it that way by getting a new phone lol really hope apple shocks everyone and announces the refresh sooner than people think!

My Verizon iPhone is kinda naked but I have a bumper on it. Had the anti-glare screen protector on when I first got the iPhone at the beginning of this month and then decided to take it off because it was affecting the retina display for me. I haven't dropped the phone on hard pavement or ground. But I have dropped it on carpet. Which isn't bad. I have one little micro scratch on the back of the iPhone that cannot be seen only in the sun. And you have to look for it though.

Other than that it's naked front and back with no screen protectors but a bumper. And what I love about the Apple official bumper is that it's rubber and it's prevents the back of the glass actually touching any surface.

Other than that I love this phone and design and glad to be an owner!! Woot!

Welcome to the dark side ;)

I have the bumper on my AT&T iPhone 4 and I gotta say, even though it's expensive $29 for a bumper it's probably the most unobtrusive case along with the incase snap. I love the grip it provides :D

I have a DecalGirl skin on the back to protect from scratches when I put it down, but that's it. I use an OtterBox Defender when I'm out running or cycling, but not day-to-day.

had mine without a case for the past 7 months..no scraches, dings, or chips....its all in paying attention to where you put your phone down, how hard you put it down.

Since 2007 used naked. If I need resale value and is scratched ? Go to apple store make up a lie. Get a easy replacement. Sell phone like is brand new. That's it. Simple as that.

I bought mine the day it was released in the US and has been naked since. A few dings on the sides from being dropped onto tile/cement, also 1 scratch below the screen on the front and one on the screen. All cosmetic, you can only see the scratch on the screen when its off. I prefer no case, easier to get in and out of pocket and less bulk.

My 3GS was naked (had a few small scratches after a year, hardly noticeable) and so is the iPhone 4.

I don't understand the obsession with scratches and screen protectors. Yes, it might dent the resale value. But I didn't pay six hundred euros for a touch screen inside a rubber condom. Might has well get an Android phone then...

No bumper, no screen protectors, no case...My phone is going all out and loving every minute of it!

I'm very careful with it, for the fear of dropping this piece of ivory heaven would shatter my dreams!
