Reset PRAM, should solve that.

Are you talking to me? About the 20 second delay on boot up?

About This Mac>More Info>System information>System Report>Serial ATA>Revision

System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Select your hard-drive in the list

I did that, I'm running SD26 and I'm not having the problems I used to have. The booting delay to the apple logo has been reduced to 7 seconds all by itself. I think it's still learning my habits as far as usage goes.

Yes, reset your pram if the delay to apple logo is long, doesn't hurt anyway. It was 20 seconds for me before doing that.

I just got my momentus xt the other day and put it in my 2009 mid macbook pro and this thing is blazing fast. start up time is insane and launching itunes/firefox/ etc is also fast. Love it, definitely invest in it.

Wow, I spoke with applecare for 40 minutes on Sunday and they couldn't tell me that! That is a absurd, anyway it worked, thank you very much! My boot time (button press to login screen) is now 20 seconds!

If you want to train it, to make sure you're getting the best boot times, disable the "remember last windows opened" feature, and just set the programs you know you use often to start on boot, then just boot, open everything you need, and reboot 5 times in a row. I just opened Adium, Steam, terminal, transmit, itunes and chrome. After doing that 5 times in a row, you know its cached and you're at your peak boot speed. Glad it worked out for you.

Genius idea! The only problem is that I have a login screen and login with a password for security reasons (obviously) but I just did cancel resume and have a few apps opening once I login.

Are they still proving reliable and how quiet are they?

I'm looking for a fast high capacity drive for studio use that's extremely quiet. There's no way I'm paying £450 for a 512 SSD.

I'm worried about buying another seagate though - 3 out of 3 segate products failed on me within the first few months of use. I have had a WD last me 7 years and counting, a freecom last about 4 and counting and a hitachi last 4 years and counting. In fact the only hard drives that have ever failed on me have been seagate.

Does no one else find them incredibly unreliable hard drives?

I'm also concerned about hitachi since my stock 7200 250GB Hitachi HTS723225L9SA62 Media drive is really pretty noisy.

Apparently the WD Scorpio Black is incompatible is the Late 2008 MBP for some reason.

I don't have many options:

Hitachi Travelstar 7K750 750GB (Is this newer MBPs ship with?)
Seagate 750GB Momentus XT

Is this true of high capacity 5400 hard drives?

"WD Scorpio Blue 1TB (5400rpm) at the moment is the best Replacement for original MBP HDD, despite it's lower RPM, coz has the double density, each Spin equals to 2 spins of the Original 500GB, so its like having a 10k RPM HDD on your mac, and drain less power than original HDD, but the Scorpio Black 750@7200rpm still the fastest 2.5"HDD (combine density and spin, plus twice cache)."

If that is the case would either of these be good:

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB 5400RPM be a better option (But is it compatible with a Late 2008 MBP like the WD Black)?

Samsung M8 1TB 2.5 Inch 5400

Thanks

I ditched my 500Gb Momentus XT around a year back. Losing 1/2 the capacity of the drive was unfortunate but I have never regretted going to a 240Gb SSD drive in my MBP. The XT, for me, had good performance and none of the big problems some people reported, but it radically lowered the battery life and that was a nuisance.

Unfortunately I can't really do with under 500gb. My battery is low enough 60% of a new one apparently. I'm not unplugged that much though.

I posted here last July that I was using the 500GB model since December 2010. Although I've purchased a new MacBook Pro, that old drive is still in use on the old system, which my daughter still used.

At the same time I ordered my new MBP I also ordered the 750GB Momentus XT and 8GB of RAM from Amazon.com, and I installed both the day of delivery. The new drive doesn't vibrate as the old one did. Also I looked at the label for power consumption and the new XT consumes less power than the stock drive (also 750GB, but 5400RPM).

So I'm very happy with the new drive and even the old one has been reliable.

Been running a XT 500GB on my late 2010 Macbook pro for over a year now with no problems.

If you're looking for a discount on one of these drives, they're on sale right now at TigerDirect for $79.99. Came out to $82-something with shipping.

Also shows in stock for most of the Illinois stores if you're around that area.

Thanks for the tip.
It is also CAD 79.99 on tigerdirect.ca, will order another one at that price.

I upgraded stock drive on my 2011 13" MBP and 2008 MacMini few months ago and it's a great drive. The only downside is a minor loss of battery life (15-20 min) compared to stock Toshiba.
