I have a 64GB iPhone X. 1) I am wondering how long this phone will last until it gets out-dated/seem old. Do NOT take in to consideration about factors, such as how well I take care of the phone. 2) In comparison, how many years do you think it will take for the iPhone 8/8 Plus to get out-dated. 3) And, as of this year, which iPhone do you think got out dated. (I know some people upgrade every year or two, but that doesn't necessarily mean the phone is out-dated).

1. The X should be good for at least 2 years, but a lot of people get 4 years out of new iPhones.

2. Well the design of the 8/8 plus is already outdated, but the tech is almost the same so your looking 2 years again.

3. I would say the 6S/6S Plus is the one that is showing the most signs of being outdated.

I'm sure Apple is looking into ways to embed the front-facing sensors and speaker behind the screen (I read something about micro-perforations?) and when that happens, the X will instantly appear dated. Although, who knows? The "notch" is iconic - maybe they won't want to ditch that.

As for tech, I'm sure they'll make substantial upgrades to both the SOC and TrueDepth (?) system - but I (for once!) don't plan to upgrade next year. I love my X, and I'm sure it will handle iOS 12 just fine.

I generally get close to 4 years out of an iPhone. After that the increased demands of updated iOS make it frustrating to use.
The tinfoil hats will tell you that Apple deliberately fouls battery life and slows down devices to make them obsolete. I prefer to believe it’s just move resource hungry apps and iOS.

What exactly would the definition of "out-dated"/"seem old" be in this context?

Mine will be outdated after the same amount of time every other iPhone model has become outdated: When I decide that it is slow enough and the battery life has degraded enough that I need the shiny new one that I really want anyway. For me that is generally about 2 to 3 years. I'm still on an iPhone 6. I did not feel like my iPhone 6 was outdated when the iPhone 7 was released, but once the 8 and the X were released my iPhone 6 suddenly felt that much slower ;)

I had the iPhone 6s Plus. You couldn’t even tell it from the iPhone 8 Plus! What do you mean outdated?
The X will be Apple’s premium phone.

TBH, it WAS slower. I kept my iPhone 6+ as a wireless hot spot on trips to Japan (where you can get data micro-sim cards from vending machines) and found that, comparatively, it's a stuttering mess with iOS 11.

Oh I definitely agree. My iPhone 6 has not been doing well with iOS 11. I guess a better way for me to say it is that, in addition to the phone actually getting slower, my tolerance for the slowness diminishes when I start to get excited about a new model. That excitement was there for the iPhone 7, because I did want the better camera, but my iPhone 6 still felt like it was working for me at the time and it wasn't very old. Now my 6 is old enough that I can easily justify an upgrade, and I'm that much more excited about the new camera capabilities.

As a rule I will only instal 2 generations of iOS after the version the phone came wth....so in this case I will load the X only till 13.

After that Timmy will want you to have a new phone so the OS will deliberately try to make things slow and unpleasant.

Full of tricks these cupertino angels.

After 14 days. ;)

Just kidding. Between 10 months and five years depending on how to define outdated...

Exactly this. In a vacuum it's OK, but once you try a newer device... done.

My 6 was actually doing fine on iOS 11. To be honest, I could have kept it for another year, but I decided with was time for something new and I got an 8 Plus.

When the notion of a new one enters your mind. In my case...about a week, when I realized I’m going to want that Plus model.

Just depends if Apple is gonna keep basically the same design for 3-4 years like they did before. If the x is the same next year I have no reason to upgrade.

24 hours! I've had mine for 24 hours and I'm back on my 5S. I got a little headache from using the X. It's a nice looking phone, but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it. I really want a Plus, but I don't want it to look like the antiquated design of the 6,7, and 8. I may return this X and get a MBP-TB 15" and wait for the X Plus next year.

If iPhone 5s can last FOUR years with only 1 GB RAM, the X should last just as long as that. By 2019-2020, a hint of lag and faster battery drain will be inevitable though.

Gotta have that planned obsolescence to keep you coming back for more and stimulate the economy. Then dump all that e-waste to third world countries like Ghana where they can melt it into copper and extract tiny specks of gold from the inside.

Consumers want new new new every year or two. By 2020 when the SE X is released, the X design had grown so old being nearly 2.5 years old, some who love it now wouldn't care for it anymore and would want a new design again. Because a new design doesn't add real functionality to a smartphone. It just keeps things fresh to the naked eye.

Smartphones are sold to us like fashion accessories and jewelry. Disposal like old shoes and socks.
