I can't believe you people believe the stuff you write.

Anyway I run both OSX 10.6 and Win7. Win7 beats OSX in more ways than OSX beats Win7. That's pretty much the simple truth. Win7 wins in speed and functionality(in this area by leaps and bounds), and OSX looks nicer. That's the gist, without going into detail.
Please elaborate. Functionality? Macs boot both OS X and Windows. How is this a loss in functionality?

A Mac isn't an operating system. TennisandMusic was comparing
two operating systems.

Hold your arms up to your monitor and pretend to interact with the screen for just 5 minutes.

Yeah, if you did it, you know you quit after like 20 seconds. It gets tiresome. Your arms just want to fall down to your sides.

Now imagine that being any sort of primary interaction mechanism.

Touch screen for general computer usage = fail. It may have some limited application, but it sucks as a replacement for keyboard/mouse.

While that is true, it is also true that the current most common
method, mouse and keyboard is not how things ought to be. It
is not natural to be disconnected from the objects you are
manipulating. The vertical touchscreen may not be the way to
go, but some form of direct interaction is.

Perhaps Project Natal (which is astonishing, btw) will mature into
something that can be of use for the desktop replacement of the
future. I'm thinking of some sort of 3D display you can reach into
with Natal like motion tracking.

seems to me apple found it more practical and useful to include multitouch in the trackpad over the monitor... no smudges on the screen, or hinge issues, i do not want a touchscreen computer, its a useless gimmick to include on a standard computer... if and when apple releases a touch screen computer (keeping in mind the ipod and iphone are not what i would call computers) they will be doing it in a new innovative way with their tablet, not their macbooks or imacs....

I am sure this has been mentioned, well at least I hope it has, but how does the OP's post relate to the OS itself?

Is it his contention that OS X does not have multitouch capabilities? Obviously this is not the case. Which means that what we are really talking about is hardware, which means this should be in the hardware section with a title like, "How long before Apple releases a multitouch tablet to catch up with PC manufacturers?"

Which makes this thread a non-starter. The OP is clearly confused about the differences between hardware and software.

Just going to pop a bluray movie into windows 7... sweet; Just going to pop a bluray movie into a mac.... oh wait can't do that!!

I guess it doesn't 'Just work'

That's why I have an HDTV. I couldn't care less about watching blu-ray movies on a computer.

there had been atempts to get people into touchscreens
on mac` to be precise on iMac g3`s by third party companys
http://www.elotouch.com/Products/Discontinued/Computers/aioimac0112.asp
but as you can see it was discontinued in 2001 already ,
even it did work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHG4pPS-Qjs&feature=related
they did not sell them in the thousands as nobody did want fingerprints all over their screen or cleaning it every hour :D
so
second thing is on the new iMacs with glass front you would need the same sort of layer over the glass as back then .... which will give the glass a bit of a matte finish , not much of a problem on a crt screen as its more then bright enough to compensate this layer , but it will be to much for the poor backlights of the new lcd screens , so it does not make sense to put afford in to make a nice glossy bright lcd screen and then put a matte layer on top of it and cover it in fingerprints

See apple action pack, all microsoft software for about $300 US, and that includes both server and client OS plus their office suite.

Right, firstly there have been unofficial Mac tablets for years.

Second, Apple is making one. This is pretty much certain after all the different sources claiming it.

Third, when that happens, Snow Leopard will obviously get it's multitouch features. I'd also like to note that all Macs support multitouch mouse hardware.

Fourth, OS X is, in general, a more secure and reliable OS. Is Windows 7 better than previous versions of Windows? Yeah. Is it better than OS X? Not so much, no.

Fifth, if you want all the features of Windows 7, be prepared to fork out the cash for the Ultimate version. Snow Leopard, with all the features, is £25. The Ultimate version of Windows 7 is £170.

Btw how many people here praising Win7 multitouch own a compatible PC with a touch monitor?

How good is Win 7's multitouch trackpad support?

Uh, isn't there BR hardware that'll work with both OSes? Yup. It depends what hardware you get... My 1 yr. old PC does not support blue-ray, so it would not matter if I got Win7 & it had BR support...

But we're talking OSes and AFAIK, Win 7 does NOT have native BR. Does Win 7 even have native DVD playback support? OS X does. I clean installed SL with its DVD only & all my hardware just worked ;)
Can you elaborate on why your 1 year old computer can't play Blu-ray discs? Windows 7 does have native DVD playback along with other video codecs.

Btw how many people here praising Win7 multitouch own a compatible PC with a touch monitor?
No one that I know of. It's still in gimmick status but OEMs are using it and their own software.

How good is Win 7's multitouch trackpad support?
That would depend on the trackpad hardware and drivers. So that's not up to Microsoft at all.

What a joke of a thread, Windows 7 is the one that needs to play catch up.

Win 7 is about where Leopard was a year ago. And a lot of its features is where OS X was years ago.

Snow Leopard's 64-bit kernel is where Windows was 8 years ago.
And Snow Leopard's transparent filesystem compression is where
Windows was 14 years ago. Etc etc.

Well apart from my annoying airport problem, I rate both OSes excellent. Mac users who haven't tried the win 7 taskbar should really check it out. I seriously doubt it would have existed if the osx dock wasn't invented.

And simply ignoring input about how Apple has no difficulty implementing touch capability that's pretty far ahead of anything else out there on their one and only touchscreen device.

Instead of dealing with those comments, he's bringing up other petty complaints about the OS.

Still looks like a troll.

So Windows 7 has been released today on sale. Check out the link above on its multi-touch features. Frankly very nice and it jumps ahead of OS X.

This is more a hardware thing than a software thing. Right now there's no Mac with a touchscreen, so why bother to support it on a system level? Tell the touchscreen manufacturers to write Mac drivers for their products. Graphics tablet manufactures were doing it for years.

to sum it up windows 7 is only a cheap copy of os x
and as it was said before
WHY should there be support for a touchscreen in osx when there is no mac with touchscreen
i certainly would not buy a touchscreen , ok they could be useful for people who dont know how to use a mouse

but the keyboard from the dell is something apple should think about, a integrated touchpad instead of a magic mouse :)
or a keyboard like this one here its fantastic and would make sense as you dont want fingerprints all over your nice iMac

as both a mac and windows user, windows 7 is leaps and bounds beyond snow leopard now. apple is the one that needs to catch up.
