I think then we can all expect not to see an Apple product produced every again, since none of us are Apple engineers.

Well, you can't expect that either since you don't work for Apple. We all really don't know until anything's announced.

Too bad you missed the part where you can initiate a FaceTime call from within the contacts app without ever being on a call.

Sure, but every indication is that initiating FaceTime directly, causes a quick connection over the cell network (call it a "call" or not, but either way the cell network IS required) in order for the two devices to exchange Internet addresses.

Every indication.... Apple's own words "cellular connection is not required for FaceTime." People stop spewing lies.

Where has Apple said that? I just re-read their FaceTime page (http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/facetime.html) and nowhere does Apple say any such thing. Apple says: "People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun." In fact, during the keynote introducting FaceTime, Apple simply said you can do FaceTime "anywhere there is WiFi." No implication about cell connectivity. In fact, Jobs said (and I'm quoting word-for-word here) "You just make a phone call."

Now, he does later say "WiFi only in 2010" but that doesn't rule out that a cell connection between the two devices is required to initiate the FaceTime session. It only means, as far as I can tell, that the FaceTime session itself will be wifi only.

If you have something official from Apple that states that a FaceTime session can be initiated if you don't have any cell coverage, I'd love to see it. I have no problem changing my tune, if I'm shown proper evidence to do so. No lies nor agenda here.

Which is why I said that. What is there to expect when we don't know or cannot expect?

Oh, that's right. You didn't see that. Because you have to be in a phone call to initiate FaceTime.

God I hate being right all the time.

I'm posting this because you got cocky. But, if you do a FaceTime call and then hang up, in recents it directly goes to FaceTime if called again.

God I hate people who think they are right all the time.

Just my two cents....

I interpreted Steve's "10 million devices" comment to include Macs. It seems logical that at some point you should be able to facetime from a iPhone to a Macbook. I think 10 million is still overshooting it a bit.

As far as THIS year goes, the iPhone 4 and possibly the next iPod touch will have it. I doubt we are going to see a new iPad this year as the current one is only a couple months old. What else is there? Unless of course he meant fiscal year...

Well you are wrong, so you can be happy now. Check out the reviews since your so incapable of comprehending what you read. It was also stated in a few of the hands on previews that you didn't need to be on a call to initiate FaceTime.

God I love proving people wrong....

LOL yeah too bad i suck at life. ;)

when you open iphone wifi connection it registers its phone number and ip address into apple push email server. this is used for faceteime. no need for cell call.

Interesting. I can certainly see it working this way. But where did you get this information? Is it from an Apple source? I don't intend to offend, I'm just wondering if this is gospel or just rumor. Thanks!

Apple's FaceTime video chat is great and all, but being accessible only to iPhone 4 owners limits its usefulness. There's a solution on the way, though, according to BGR, that'll bring FaceTime to the iPad, iPod Touch, and possibly Macs.

It makes sense that Apple would want to expand FaceTime across its family of devices. And BGR hears taht to work around the iPad and iPod Touch's lack of phone numbers to call, Apple will use email addresses instead:

Your Apple ID will be registered with your device/s, and that will allow other Apple devices to start a FaceTime call using your email address. Apple will also reportedly make use of push notifications to deliver these incoming FaceTime connection requests as we have been informed there is a push notification detector tied into the FaceTime frameworks in the new iPhone OS 4.1 beta. We're not sure how Apple will handle an iPod touch trying to connect to a FaceTime session on an iPhone as it seems Apple would still require you to use the iPhone's phone number, at least that's how it seems currently.
