If iOS 8 doesn't become as smooth as iOS 7 on the iPad Air then I may be tempted to take up an iPad Air 2 next year. That would be four iPads in four years for me, iPad 3 was my first iPad and I've upgraded annually since then.

Bought a used iPad 1.. Had that for like 2. Weeks, didn't like the size. I got a kindle fire until the mini came out. Bought the mini on release day..
I asked for apple gift cards for Christmas so I have a mini 2 on its way.

My first iPad was an iPad 3 bought on fall 2012 (just 2 weeks before the announce of iPad 4!!! argh!!!), and now iPad Air 2...

iPad 3 served well since iOS 8... i think that an iPad 4 would have lasted another year (my iPhone 5, which has nearly the same hw of the iPad 4, is still running smmoth iOS 8), so i think that the cycle could be 3 years... but it seems that the "power" of ipad is increasing year by year more than iOS is requiring... so maybe new iPads could last more, imho. Planned obsolecense could be the real deal.

Bought an iPad 1 secondhand back in early 2011, and loved it up until I watched the iPad mini keynote in Oct. 2012. Preordered a mini at midnight soon after and have been using it since. I've played with and fell for the Air 2, which I'm sure I'll most likely upgrade to, but that most likely won't be happening until around Air 3 release time, as I'm still loving this mini 1. Yes, it's got 512MB RAM and no retina screen, but it hasn't bothered me yet and it still works wonderfully for the daily tasks I do with it, so my money spent then is none the wiser now. I would've had an Air 2 this holiday season, but I decided to put more money in savings and enhance my stock portfolio. My upgrade will come soon and put me on a 3 year upgrade schedule.

I started out with an iPad, then an iPad 2 the next year, and then got the iPad mini the next and stuck with that until I got my 6 Plus. Now, my phone has pretty much replaced my need for an iPad and I gave my mini to my dad.

However, he is thinking of upgrading from the iPad 2 and the mini to an Air 2 (yeah, he's using two iPads haha). Right now he's working on selling the 2nd gen on Craigslist.

I got an iPad when they first came out. I bought the 32GB wifi model. Absolutely loved it.

When the iPad 3 came out I was considering getting one, but instead won a 16GB WiFi model from work. Quickly realized that 16GB was not enough and when the iPad 4 came out bought one with 64GB and this time with Cellular as well.

Now I just got the iPad Air 2, and this time upped it again to 128GB with Cellular. I will keep this one at least 2 years as well if not more. I really cannot see how much better these things could get. The iPad Air 2 is super fast and super thin already.

Used to update every year, have now gone to when something I need is on the new model, got the iPhone 6 because I wanted continuity, apple pay and finger print sensor, got the iPad Air 2 because I wanted the finger print sensor. Plus of course my iPhone 5 and iPad 4 had both become sluggish on ios8.

I upgrade every year.

1). I get the new one
2). Hubby gets my old one
3). His goes to the grandson (who is 10 and uses it for school work)
4). The grandson's old one goes to the granddaughter (who is 7).
5) her old one goes to the local children's hospital.

Took a few years to get this cycle. I originally had a 2 and bought a refurb 1 for my husband to travel with. Forgot that it didn't have FaceTime (which was the main reason to get him one) so gave that to the grandkids and bought him a new 2. Then we started the hand-me-down thing with the refurb going to the children's hospital.

Since the oldest one is getting long-in-the-tooth, I justify needing to replace it and I'm not going to buy a new one for the kids so it works out well for me #####.

But we're retired and have the disposable income. Otherwise I would probably wait a couple of cycles.

I'm glad to see that you have a plan for how to use your iPads! Especially the fact that you end up donating them to the children's hospital!

I, personally, hope to have my Air 2 for at least the next three years. With the Air 2 being called the "longevity model", I'd be even more happy if I could squeeze four years out of it, but that's doubtful. I have no idea as to what I'll do with it then, as it's too far in advance to think :p

I recently upgraded from the original iPad to the Air 2. I definitely noticed the difference in performance/size/weight. :)

The original iPad got restored to factory settings, went back in the original packaging and became a Christmas gift for my best friend's son.

You gave someone your original iPad? Lol, what a gift

Well, I feel like 3 years is a good tablet life in their current state.

I got my iPad 3 in June of 2012, I did plan on getting an Air 2 in November of 2014 (which is just over 2 years), but that was only because Apple really screwed iPad 3 owners. I ended up returning both Air 2's due to build quality.

Each iPad to date except the iPad 1 and iPad 3 I think are perfectly fine for going over 3 years. I will go 3 years with my iPad 3, but it isn't always a great experience.

Still using my iPad 3 that I got on release. Want to go to an Air2 but the wife isn't keen to fork out for an upgrade just yet. I've noticed the slow down in the 3 since getting it, can hardly wait to retire it, although I must say it's been great throughout it's life to date.
32Gb WiFi/Cellular, almost looks as good as new.
