Had the MBA given me what I wanted I'd probably have changed in the next couple of months, but it hasn't, so I'll hang on for another year or so.

I always PLAN to keep my mac laptops for three years, but I never manage to do that because Apple always comes up with something I can't resist. So, usually I sell after a year or two and upgrade. Three years seems reasonable though.

I just bought my 2.2ghz MBP and I'm fairly happy with the performance.

I may keep it a couple years, depending on what upgrades Apple comes out with and how much of a speed difference it makes.

Currently happy, though.

Got my MBP in March '07. I had planned on keeping it only 1 year, but now I might wait until MBP is updated w/ Montevina & hopefully a case re-design... Upgrading at this time (or within the next 3-4 months) seems pointless to me...not enough of a significant difference.

I keep mine until the OS no longer supports them. For example, when Leopard came out, I gave my G3 iBook to my wife to use, upgrading her from my old 3400c. I'll run my Ti 500 and PB 1.67 until G4s are no longer supported (10.7 hopefully), then I'll upgrade to an Intel machine.

yes, I'm a cheap bastard.

I'm 17 now, and I hope it will last me through university. Can anyone tell me whether that is even realistic? Not that I don't love upgrading, it's just if I have to while in uni, I won't really have any money...

If you take good care of it, it can last up to 6-8 years!

but... Leopard won't run on a 500MHz Ti, right?

I tie it into AppleCare and keep to a 3 year replacement cycle. I keep the old machine as long as it's useful, but since it's out of warranty, it's a throwaway as soon as something significant breaks.

I'm hoping my MB will last me all through college. I was using an iBook for a year and then used it jointly with a Mac mini for a year and a half before getting my MB for college (that and I bought Applecare, too, so it better last me at least 3 years).

I've already had my MacBook for almost 2 years, and plan to keep using it until the end of my undergrad, and most likely as my main system during my graduate studies. So we're looking at a few more years here, perhaps another 3.

I bought a 15" Powerbook G4 and had that for almost 2 years. I sold that and bought a 15" Macbook Pro because of the Intel processor. I've had it for about 1.5 years and plan on keeping it for about another 3 years.

3-4 years total. I've owned this one about 2 months now.

Later this year I'll buy a new desktop. Gives me a laptop and desktop for me and my girl to use. A couple of years from then I'll buy another laptop and we'll give our macbook to a family member. Continue the desktop/laptop switching every 1-2 years and now you know how my house buys computers.

I voted two years, but over the last several laptops its been more like between 18 months to two years. I get the upgrade itch too frequently (much to my wife's chagrin).

My MB will survive until the new MBP comes out. Then it will fulfill its destiny by suborning relatives into 'The Mac' (sorry, I've been watching the stuff Anon has been uploading to teh interwebs :D). My old iBook is already responsible for two 'conversions'.
