Once the new data tech is available, we wont have access to it unless we "upgrade" our data plan to whatever they have available at that time. This is how they will get a lot of us to get rid of our grandfathered plans.

YES! This! This is the other main tactic they use. At least we have another year or so on unlimited before this becomes the problem. Even then, 4g might not be widespread enough to bother with. At least at that point I will have a *really* good idea what my data usage will be with multi-tasking and iAd. Then I might feel somewhat better about switching.

Isn't this what happened with the transition from 3G to 3gS? Was there a price increase because of 'network speeds of up to 7.5mbps' or something like that?? Umm... I'm still seeing the same speed btw... :(

I don't recall reading about a price increase when the 3GS came out.

There was a price increase for the 3G vs the original iPhone, but that was because the original iPhone wasn't subsidized, and Apple and ATT had negotiated a special deal with the iPhone data plan.

Not quite

Your thinking of the upgrade from 2G to 3G
Unlimited Data went from $20 for 2G to $30 for 3G
I'm convinced that while you can grandfather your 3G data plan for now with your 3G phone or even when you upgrade to a new 3G Phone
When you want to upgrade to a 4G phone you won't be able to keep the 3G plan as it is a legitimately different service and will be priced differently.
Verizon has said as much about 4G and it's obvious AT&T agrees on pricing.

So in short being that I use about 250-300mb of data a month on 3G and I know I'll be getting a new phone in 2011, after LTE comes out and when I am sure my unlimited data will go away, their is no point is trying to hold on to my unlimited data for a time when I use more because the tech is so much better.

I'll just take my $5 savings and be happy for now, though AT&T's pricing structure on texts and now 3G really peaves me, it's always the same a tiny plan that almost no one fits into and a larger plan that is way more than what most people need.
200 texts = $5
200 mb = $15

1500 texts $15
2GB = $25

The average high for a iPhone user is about $500 mb but they don't over a 500-1GB plan of course not
my average as well as a lot of people I know average 500 texts a month but then again no plan for that.

It was the one thing that made me really mad after switching from verizon where I paid $10 for 500 texts because they have fair in between options unlike AT&T

I know this is an old thread, but I'm looking for an update. I'm currently on an unlimited data plan and want to keep it that way. However, my actual phone plan (minutes/$) has, I believe, been discontinued. When I use my phone upgrade, will I be forced to change my phone plan, and if so, will I also lose my unlimited data plan?

I wonder what happens if you decide to go away from the iPhone and use a different device for a while. Since this plan is dubbed an "iPhone data plan" would they remove it if say you use a blackberry for a year then go back to an iPhone.... and hence losing your grandfathered status. If thats the case then you are locked in and have to keep using an iPhone or upgrading to iPhones for as long as you want to have unlimited data...

If you drop your unlimited data to switch to a non-iPhone, you cannot get it back no matter how hard you try.

Your only option would likely to be activate and use an original iPhone and use it for a substantial period of time. By substantial, I mean several months.

you still get to keep you unlimited data. I went from an Unlimited blackberry data plan to the standard unlimited data plan no issue.

Also the "iPhone data plane" in AT&T system is still consider a smart phone data plan. Blackberry is the only one that really gets their own.

Well more so now there is Smart phone, Blackberry and then the fake 4G ones.

Came from Blackberry unlimited myself and switched to iPhone 4 with no problems and still unlimited.

There is little to no chance that unlimited stays on when LTE goes active for AT&T and/or the next gen for Verizon

None

They want people off unlimited as badly as possible and will make sure to find a way to get them all off.

We will be told by the companies that this is a "new network" with "new speeds and services" and thus they require "new plans"...none of which will be even slightly good.
