I just finished installing a small WD Scorpio Blue SSD 64Gb into the old Dell 8100 P4 2.0Ghz 2Gb RAM in my signature = while this ~11 year old CPU/PC was outdated very quickly adding this SSD has really breathed new life into this machine and made it an acceptable internet browser on my network hidden behind my living room recliner (it originally only had a 40Gb HDD so this was also an upgrade for space as well as speed)!

James, I've been looking at replacing my HDD in my 24" iMac 2.8 C2D. Any recommendations for a Solid State? I'm also considering upgrading the RAM. According to the iMac model number (7,1) it can unofficially utilize up to 6GB. I currently have 3 and I'm not sure 4 is going to cut it. OWC or MacSales.com says for the late '07 model only. . . I'm not sure if my iMac is considered late '07 or not, it is the Aluminum body. . . Anyone know?

Appreciate the help.

See this thread, posts #280 and 282, for the parts I used. You have the same iMac as I do (7,1) and the upgrade went as smoothly as I could have imagined. If I had thought about it beforehand, I would have ordered a 4GB stick of RAM to replace one of my 2 gig sticks (as I've also read it can support 6 gigs). But after using the machine for a couple of weeks now, I'm not sure I need it. Oh, and I used this guide for doing the upgrade.

i recently bought an i3 imac and i am wondering how long it should last me, based on the fact i use it for photoshop, iphoto, itunes, light gaming, email, internet surfing?

Hoping it will last a good 2 years atleast

And has it got you what you wanted? Now that we find ourselves 3 years since your question.

Well three years sure flies by!

To answer your question yes it has got me exactly what I wanted and more! It has been absolutely perfect since the day I bought it with the only addition being an extra 4GB of ram to put it up to 8 in total.

Im now an architecture student and its performed perfectly with AutoCAD, sketch up, photoshop and more heavy software than I initially thought it would run.

Couldn't be more pleased, although I am in the process of buying a new rmpb the iMac has been so great throughout! :)

If your studying Architecture I'd suggest keeping your old machine set up great for back up but also having a machine, even a slow one, to off load rendering jobs while you keep working towards that design deadline will be very valuable.

My iMac held 5 years and it died because of hardware failure (probably could be replaced and I wanted new one, so I didn't bothered to fix it) without that, I could use it for at least two more years.

I use it for audio and music engraving, internet, mail, other office works. I also play WoW from time to time.

While we at it, here's another example. My Early 2009 MacMini still runs like the day I bought it, right now I have google chrome opened while watching news, Plex running and WoW.
