The overall design will last until 2014

If the external antennae is what you mean...that will change when Apple finds something better and not a moment before.

For me the best analogy is the 4/4S is a BMW 330i and the iPhone 5 is an M3. They're both 3 Series, but one has more features and slight modifications and the other is the base model.

So, to me, the iPhone 5 is not a redesign, but more of an enhancement to the now base 4/4S.

At the rate they are going, this design will last for many generations to come.

How long has a pencil been a pencil

10 yrs from now there wont be many smart phones.

No need for everybody to carry around an 8 core 3GHz processor in their hands.

The apps or at least the processing will be in the cloud with the handset just a thin client.

You really think all those high profile data centers being built are just big file cabinets for your media.

And I am really going out on a limb calling it a handset. A device for sure, but not necessarily held, much less in your hand.

I agree. The handset as we know it will cease to exist. Read a book recently called "Physics of the Future" by Michio Kaku. It talks about all this new tech that works with micro LEDs in contact lenses. Interesting stuff.

Maybe something unlike a 2 year old design of the iPhone 4

U buy a car - u want a new design

Not really. Lots of people buy new cars that look no different from the previous year.

Yes, but we'll still need something to make use of our hands, as it's not always practical to dictate in public or in a meeting, unless they find a way to read our mind.

I know some people compare Apple design to Porsche & BMW. To not radically change the design, just refine it. How thin will phones go, will we ever try to get thicker. I think this model and "5s" could be last iteration of this current design.

I think wearable designs will be an option within 5 years.

I'm really not sure why people are surprised. For example: Macbook Pro. Look how long they've kept that design...around 4 years and counting.

No point of changing the look of a gorgeous design. Only make it better!

But I think the design will completely change in 2014. Heck, Apple is probably already working on it. By then, I can only imagine how thin the phone will be.

The design will not really change that much. Apple felt forced to elongate the 5 for the people who wanted a larger screen. Just making it longer was a waste in my opinion. I could deal with a wider 4" screen but others were freaking out so Apple did what it could to not be laughed at for having such a small screen.

As far as thinner, nothing was wrong with the 4S thickness and would have wished they left it the same to increase the battery size to shut up the numerous users who will complain about battery life on the 5, ignoring the fact they can't keep their hands off of their "toy". It is a puberty thing:p

In the end all the phone makers are getting to the limits as to what you can do with a phone, if Samsung spent a little more money on cosmetics on the exterior, they would find even more people would love them. It is hard to resist glass and metal when compared to plastic!

Hope all enjoy their 5.

And what changes would you suggest exactly. And your buying a phone not a car so...yeah. If you want to show it off buy a bright case or something since you seem to want more flash. The black sleekness of the phone is perfect for me. Don't need any worthless bells and whistles here. Just form and function.

Thx

This design will last until 2014, when the iPhone 6 will be released if they stick to their pattern.

The principles of Apple design seem to be "thinner is better" and "unibody is better" so expect Ive to keep working in that direction. Maybe the iPhone 6 will have a true unibody Liquidmetal design..and you can bet it will be thinner.

Edited to add: I'm also excited to see whether they start integrating OS X and iOS by 2014. The next few years are going to be interesting.

Has Nokia jumped the shark?

Here's the Nokia Lumia 800

Basically the same design aesthetically except for the screen size getting bigger.

I wonder when phones will just be as thin as they can be or at least should be, even if you can make phones half as thin as the new iPhone 5 should they? Going to start getting uncomfortable to hold if it gets much thinner and it really is thin enough.

As for design, how often is the design suppose to completely change? Just for the sake of changing? Not that it hurts to toss in a new design when possible to make it feel newer, that is likely something that may only happen every few years and there are only so many designs a phone can have. These days it seems to be up internals and just upgrading what it can do each year.

I think Apple really likes how they have the antenna on the outer rim of the phone. Unless they make glasses or watch form factor... I think the handset look will remain for years to come. Take for example iMac.. except for the first one they pretty much had the sunflower design.

Assuming Apple keeps on doing the whole # and then S release and every 2 years release a new design. iPhone 6 in 2014 seems like the obvious choice, but anything could change between now and then.
