Just like the PB 12" G4 I just replaced that was five years old, I hope to get the same out of my new MBP.
Like you said. :) I replaced my 5 year old PowerBook G4 17 inch with a MacBook Pro and hope to get 5 years of use out of it, too.

I am impressed how do you change machine every 3 years!, is 2500USD each MBP, I have my 2 years old 1rst revision MBP and It will last me 2-3 more years. A lot of users change from CD MBP to C2D MBP, the difference is not big jump (not even 2x), minimum 2x performance to change machine. My machine is plenty fast, even with Leopard, It still use my dual 1ghz G4 with leopard to do seirious photoshop and final cut work (6 years old machine).
A lot here are just apple adicted.... (me too) but you have to use the computer until the last breath. Maybe upgrade HD, ram, but change the computer for the super multitap blaaa.. for the 512 MB crappy card...I you want to play get a PS3 WAYyyyyy cheaper, wayyyy better performance....
Just my 2 cents.

my main comp I usually change out every 3 years but my MBP isn't used as much just when im on the go, so hopefully i can keep this one for about 5 years.

I'm hoping for at least 5+ years (bought 10/06). Can't see my 2.33 MBP being obselete even well after that. I think of it like buying a car, take great care of it, and make it last as long as you can. It's not even two years old and even with all the updates, it's still better and faster than 90% of the populations computer. This thing was built to last!

4-5 yrs. Who am I kidding, until the next update.

i've never kept any computers for longer than 4 years so far....

Generally i'd like to my new machine to be at least doubled in performance when compared with my machine being replaced...

otherwise, i'd feel too wasteful; not to mention doing real harm to the environment...

Keeping it cool...

2 years and out. I love new stuff. BUT I've learned my lesson: I'll wait until June to update...No company, repeat, NO COMPANY directly or indirectly manipulates its customers better than Apple. Apple (and the religious zealot rumor mongers) play silly games with its customers regarding new models around MWSF (a la the pynryn and anticipated big performance and battery life boost...NOT!).

Generally I keep a laptop 3-4 years. My last Asus was for 2 years 9 mos and with the advent of Fusion (I'm a .NET software eng), my desire to own a Macbook Pro in its current form factor (consider it a modern classic), and such a game changer as Nehalem maybe more than a year off decided to buy now, baby the thing to keep its resale intact, and wait for the 1st Nehalem revision 4th quarter '09 or 1st '10.

That's actually the nice thing about a Mac. It holds resale well so I probably come out hardly the worse for upgrading in 2 years vs. 4.

ha i'm the same as you - i had a 12" g4 powerbook, the main reason i upgraded to a new 15"mbp was the hard drive was always full and it had got slow, but other than that i was still happy with it. Although when i put them side by side now he difference is astounding with the new one being so much faster.

I had my first laptop a toshiba for 3 years until the power connector broke off the motherboard. Bought this Mac used, a core duo 15" mat. and hope to keep it running for another 3 years or maybe more, though it will reside in my storage shrine after that, i like keeping old hardware. Like i said elsewhere I still got my SE with OS 6.0.8. In all theory i should be able to keep it long, I don't do much with it aside from terminal work in the gloriously gorgeous transparent windows. And then a rare stint into Photoshop or OmniOutliner.

. . about two years: OK my current Penryn MBP will be snappier when/if the 7200rpm HDD is replaced when/if high-performance SSDs are affordable; but:

. . . when/if a sorted mechanical revision of the MBPs gets USB3 [& remember the expresscard hangs off the USB bus] this will remove a really major bottleneck - ATM 1394B can just about cope with a single current-generation external 3.5" HDD or simple mirrored RAID box; but onboard eSATA/USB3 will be needed surprisingly soon for those with reasonably serious requirements for streaming data & its storage.

I'm planning to keep my MBP for 3-5 years. but as of now I'm already thinking of trading it for a new penryn MB + iphone, because I really don't need the extra power of the ATI X1600 128MB :D

that is only if I find someone who wants to trade, otherwise I'll be keeping it like I said for another 3-5 years.

I'm hoping for at least three as a portable, and when I feel the need for an upgrade (or switch to a MacBook), my MBP will become a desktop replacement.

prob 3 years.

they last longer, its just at that point they seem to be 'behind' . thats my opinion, i tend to buy to much!

but hey its better than buying a dell and needing to replace it 6 months later!

fully agree just went through this

I'm replying on my 2002 12" iBook G3 800 (Tiger / 384MB ram) gives you an idea about how long I'd expect a new MBP to last! :)

I plan on upgrading to a MBP sometime within the next year, so I expect another 5-6 years out of it. Granted, I don't do as much 'work' as I used to on this machine, but it still gets used for a minimum of 4 hours a day for internet, email and other lighter duty stuff.

This is the only :apple: machine in the house right now, so I can't wait to get a new MBP and iMac (or possible MP) for the desktop.

Chinese Water Torture

I got the cheapest Gateway laptop option (800MHz Intel Celeron when the Pentium III was the hot stuff) in 2002 and am just replaced that with a Penryn MBP in March 2008. Hopefully this high-end computer will last me a good 4 years. I don't do a lot of processor hungry stuff, so if the rate of advancement is like what it has been the past 4 years or so, hopefully this will last 4 years.

Thats weird - I bought a Gateway 733Mhz Pentium III at the end of 2000. Typing on it right now - and let me just say, China: who needs water torture when an 8 year old computer will do the trick? I'm definitely getting a MBP ASAP!

Does the fact that I have to literally walk away from my computer and do something else while it starts up any indication of the ritual suicide I perform daily?

another 2 years or so, I've had it for 1.5 so far :)

I'll probably get a new one when montevina rev B comes out.

I tend to keep computers for as long as they are useful to me. I have a Gateway PC that I got in February 2003. I still use it for limited things, but it does what I need it to do. So, I see my MBP lasting me at least 5 years.

Well, I used my 12" PowerBook (867MHz, 640MB RAM, 40GB HDD) for over 5 years with no problems, so I would hope that the current Apple laptops would be capable of the same feat.

I hope to use my MacBook for about 3 years, as thats how long AppleCare lasts, but I would have no objections to Apple giving me a brand new MacBook is a year or two's time if my current one breaks. :p
