Launch-day 3GS user here. I am 95% sure that I will get the 4S. I'm on the "odd year" upgrade cycle (bought iPhone in Feb '08 when 16 GB launched; skipped 3G; bought 3GS; skipped 4).

I wish there was more to the 4S to "future proof" my purchase, but in reality I am very happy with the years my 3GS has given me. I'm just no longer able to tolerate the low display PPI, the weakening battery and the dust trapped under its glass.

i think i am going to upgrade to the galaxy s2 or wait to the next android phone. But no way for the iphone 4s. I did not skip the 4 to buy more than one year later a 4s

Argh... I'm still so indecisive... it really comes down to two things:

Do I try to completely disregard that I'd be getting a phone which basically has been out for one and a half years and will most likely be revamped completely one year from now and be happy with the fact hat I would be getting a phone that's a significant improvement to my current one?

Or do I hold on to said phone for one more year in order to get a much more remarkable, new and innovative phone (under the assumption that the next iPhone will be about as big as a leap as iPhone 3GS->iPhone 4 was)?

In other words do I try to not care what others have? Or do I hold on to my faithful old 3GS in order to get something exciting next year? Whaa, I really can't decide... what would you do? Please, someone help me! D:

Probably.

I've had my 3GS since December 2009, so my 2 year contract is due to run out fairly soon.

To be honest my current phone still does most of the things I want from it, a better camera will be nice, especially with a flash (I really missed the flash for quickly taking photos on nights out etc.), but 95% of what I use my phone for is web browsing, email and listening to music whilst out and about. My 3GS still does those as well as I need it too.

A lot of people seem upset that the screen isn't getting any larger, though I've never really found the screen in my current phone to be too small, so it doesn't affect my decision so much. I guess it's more important if you're playing a lot of games or watching films which I don't have time for when I'm out and about and at home I have consoles, tvs etc for that kind of thing!

I'm just learning how to develop for IOS, so I still want to have an Apple device to test on and I've never really liked Android when I've used it anyway. I may hold off for a little while to see if there are rumours of an iPhone 5, but if it looks like being next October, I doubt I'll wait that long.

Curious as to how many of us here still with 3GS plan on upgrading to 4S.

I'm on the fence right now as to whether I will upgrade or not.
Do I just wait for iOS5 and be happy with that or go all out and get me a new phone?

I'm in the exact same boat. I've been using my 3GS for almost 2 years now, and while it's working perfectly, I'm ready to move to a newer phone.

Since the 4S isn't going to be available for another week or so, I'm going to take everything else in and then make an informed decision. On one hand, I recently handled the Infuse 4G for the first time and I was blown away by the screen (and I'm also blown away still by the Retina display). I was also pleasantly surprised by the fluidity of the OS...not the stuttering OS that I remember from the last time I messed with an Android phone (it's been a while since then). I've been really torn the last few days after seeing that phone and thinking the GSII has to be even better.

BUT...like most of us here, I'm very invested in the Apple ecosystem, most of the people I know have the iPhone 4 (thus, I could actually USE Facetime), and the even-better camera really sounds good to me (I use my camera on my 3GS every single day in my job). Being able to take really great pictures with the 4S is music to my ears.

So, I don't know. The smart thing to do, on one hand, is to upgrade to the 4S. It'll be a seamless transition and I'm intrigued by iCloud. I'll probably check out the Android thing that's happening next week, weigh my options, and then pull the trigger.

In all honesty, though, I'm fairly certain I WILL upgrade to the 4S.

I may hold off for a little while to see if there are rumours of an iPhone 5, but if it looks like being next October, I doubt I'll wait that long.

See, that's sorta where I'm at. But I know very well what is going to happen.
I'll wait for iPhone 5 to come out and when it does, I'm going to convince myself I really need to wait for 5S to be released.

My 3GS works great. I have no problems with it whatsoever. After 2 years, it is still going strong. I think I'm going upgrade but maybe not right away.
Who knows... We'll see what mood I wake up on Friday

My 3GS crapped out on me since May. It was running perfectly smooth until then. Have been using a super slow 3G because of OS4 since May.. yeah I may even camp out on this one.

Waiting to see what the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich look like (they'll be released a week from today). Like others here, I'm used to the Apple "ecosystem" but willing to give it up for something that's worth it.

Apple's system is good, but not good enough that they can be 2 years behind everyone else and continue to expect to get away with it. They should feel lucky that they've been getting away with it for this long...

If I can find a refurbed iPhone 4 from Apple, I'll get that instead. I don't play games on my iPhone, I think Siri is gimmicky and for the camera...it's still a phone.

I still have a 3G. I was really hoping for an Iphone 5 beacause mine is really slow and the power off button is broken. The internet doesnt really work but, I might stick with it for another year.

I have loved my 3GS best phone I ever had, I just need a upgrade mainly for battery life and camera , I have my 3GS jail broken and it works great , just leaving the jailbreak world on the phone for a while has me thinking if I should wait to upgrade and see what the iPhone 4s brings. Right now am in love with my new iPad 2 jail broken , I have a couple of days I guess to make a choice. Tough letting go of the 3GS :(

Ill be swapping my 3gs for a 4s. It was a good run but I don't wanna fall to far behind and this upgrade is burning a hole in my pocket so why not. Ill probably end up waiting a little while but I will deff have a 4s in my possession soon.

I was on the fence until 3 weeks ago when I dunked my 3GS in a lake...3 weeks with a Moto Slvr has about killed me!! I'll be hammering on the pre-order at 2am Fri.

i was gonna get a s2 but the back of that phone i made like crap so ill get the 4s eventhough i dont really want too

I'm off contract with my 3GS now and it's been a very durable and reliable phone for the last 2 years. I too was hoping for a new design iPhone 5 but I had my reservations.

Think about it. Apple is basically subsidizing all kinds of costs associated with keeping the same design as the iPhone 4. All that machinery and tooling used to produce casings and glass etc. etc. is expensive for Apple as well as their partners (Foxconn etc.) to purchase and assemble on lines. In order to keep the high margins Apple is known for they've got to minimize changes and keep to a 2 year cycle much like they do with their Mac line of computers. Intel does the same thing with their processors and it's referred in the industry as a "tick/tock" cadence. Tick being the 4, tock being an incremental improvement the 4s. We all hate it, but until Apple sees real competition in the smartphone arena in terms of % profit they'll continue to rest on their hardware laurels on the 2 year cycle.

With that said I'll be going to a 16gb 4s but I'll probably buy it outright off contract in case I want to switch over to Verizon or if a redesigned iPhone 5/6 comes out with enough compelling reasons for me to upgrade.

I'm upgrading from my 3GS. But not because the 4GS is such a great phone. I upgrade because my 3GS seems to be broken and the battery seems about to die.

I see now several options:

get a white 16GB 4S for $199 + 2 years ATT imprisonment
get a white 16GB 4S for $649 unlocked (but I don't get a discount on my ATT contract, however I can use it in Europe)
get an Android phone unlocked and switch to a cheaper plan

I'm really not sure now what to do. ATT sucks in Boston/Cambridge. I doubt Sprint is much better overall. I also would like to have an unlocked Phone for Europe. But I don't think these prices are justified. I had hoped the iPhone 4 would be a cheap unlocked option but they want $549 for that.

Well I will most likely stay on my 3GS and see if a reinstall of iOS5 makes it less unstable and then see how the market evolves towards X-mas.

So in short: No for now I'm not upgrading because Apples prices are too high for my taste. In two or three month I think about it again.
