I bought it on July assuming iPad air 3 would come out for this fall..and iPad pro. I could care less if it did come out because I accepted and therefore have no buyer's remorse. I was thinking of waiting, but I needed something to read and do browsing...and studying as well. I'm fine..and i came to term with it.

Given that multitasking was to be featured in iOS 8, I had a feeling that A8X was meant for the iPad pro last year, with air 2 getting the A8 with 2gb ram (a combo that eventually showed this year). iPad pro was delayed so Air 2 ended up getting A8X. I think future non pro models will not be getting X chips from now on.

You might be on to something here...

If that is the case, the iPad Air 2 really was a great purchase at launch.

If I had confirmation an Air 3 is not coming out until next year I would get an Air 2 now. I do have the option of waiting a month and getting a battered ex salesman Air 2 from my wife's work for £45 but part of me wants a new one really. I don't want to spend £400 this month and for Apple to surprise us with a release in November so users like me are in limbo somewhat.

I want to upgrade my original Air and waited hoping for an Air 3 release. But that didn't happen last week, so yesterday I got a refurbished Air 2 from Apple. I need the 2g of ram and the added speed, and the mystique of the newest and greatest just suddenly faded for me. A tablet is a tool, Apple's refurbs are fantastic, and I need the extra $140 more than they do.

As to the Pro, it will probably be dazzling in person, and a few iterations down the line I may be tempted (though leaving it at home, can't see hauling that around). But for me it has the abstract appeal of the Apple Watch - if someone gave me one I'd use it, but I don't feel inclined to buy my own. Meanwhile I like the portability of the Air and the screen size is great for my purposes. If I want something bigger, I can go to my snazzy 27" Dell monitor in another room.

why should i be happy or unhappy? a year ago when i bought mine, it was then. if they were air3, my air2 is still the same before announcing a new version. if i had bought it yesterday, it would be the same as it was on yesterday.

I don't think they had much to upgrade on it other than to an A9 and just that would not have been worth upgrading to.
A9 might have been a worthwhile upgrade. The problem is that if they had made an iPad Air 3 with the A9X then the iPad Pro would really just seem like a "big iPad." As of now, Apple can show that the iPad Pro has more computing and graphical power than the Air 2, further justifying the "pro" label, and the price. The amount of RAM (still not officially confirmed, but 4 GB in the Pro compared to 2 GB in the Air 2) is a good differentiator, but Apple doesn't advertise that metric. This may be similar to why the Mini 4 is receiving the A8, instead of the A9 or A9X as well.

It's not really a disappointment, either way. The iPad Air 2 is an awesome device, but even those devices with the A7 chipset (like my iPad mini 2 and iPhone 5S) are still solid performers.

Anybody feel happy those who bought theirs not long ago that theirs stay the latest and greatest?

till next year anyway

No i am not glad that there is no new Ipad Air(3) this year!! How can you not update the most populer sized 9.7 ich ipad it does not make sense at at tall!!! :(:(:mad:

To be honest Apple should of a least done a small update like even just putting A9 or A9X chip inside that would be enough.

I haven't had a Ipad yet and i was going to wait for the Ipad Air 3 and get that one as it be my 1st ever ipad but since there is no Air 3 this year it looks like i going another Android tablet that is very similar to the Ipad and that is the new Samaung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, i don't really want to get a 1 year old tech.

till next year anyway

Hopefully this October i really hope you are wrong!!!

Of course you know that the S2 will be orphaned by Thanksgiving right? This is Samsung that we're talking about after all. :D (says the guy still plugging away with a GTab Pro 8.4)

I have no hesitation recommending an Air 2... even at this "late" date. I'll be picking one up in a few weeks. (not sure if it will be 64GB or 128GB)

As they say, that's the chance you take when you play the waiting game. Play it too long and rather than enjoying a new device you'll be waiting forever.

Buy now, enjoy now.
But that's my problem. I never know ''when'' I've been playing for too long. There are a lot of devices I don't get until it's ''too late''. I have yet to get the iPad yet, but I am thinking about the Pro.

I have yet to get a Macbook Pro, but have a feeling that when I do get it, they will change the body the following year.

Ah, the old "paralysis by analysis". It's a common ailment.

Thinking about the iPad Pro as your first iPad is a bit risky. Primarily because it is a 1st gen product. Second, because you'll be paying a premium for the Pro (over an Air or Mini) without knowing how well the iPad would fit into how you use devices.

Many want to be on the leading edge of the generation of hardware but don't have the money or "courage" (for lack of a better word). Me, I like to be in the middle or toward the end of a generation. The manufacturing bugs and kinks have been worked out. Sometimes there are mid-gen upgrades that make it even better than the first ones.

If you want to get in on the leading edge of the generation, then get the iPad Pro now... and wait until the Macbook Pro to change and then buy THAT then.

Why would I be happy about the Air 2 not getting an upgrade? It is now a year behind Apple's cutting edge.

On the contrary, it was a year ahead of iOS last year. You can't compare it to the Pro, and it's still apparently ahead (better SoC) of the Mini 4.

The latest and greatest is a disease that Apple promotes to convince us it's a normal way of life.

Due to the very high prices of their products it creates some serious financial burden on those who can't afford it. Sadly some of these people buy anyway going into debt while also living in denial

It's these same people that create threads in this forum discussing where to find the cheapest third party straps for the expensive and high quality Apple Watch they bought. Or bitching that they can't find a $5 aftermarket case that's good quality for their $700 plus iPhone.

Such an unfortunate state of affairs.

My iPad Air 2 serves my needs fine. Plus my needs are not going to change just because Apples got a new model coming in the future. It's irrelevant that I can easily afford it, what is relevant is that I choose to not obsess over it, nor do I care what others think.

Air 3 would have been cool as long as I would have been able to keep my collection of Smart Covers... but I also think the Air 2's specs were overpowered before, and I still think it is now, (which is good.) Also, like someone said earlier, comparing the Air 2 to the Pro is unfair... as one is a giant lablet/tabtop and The Air 2 is an iPad tablet...period.
The iPad Pro is not an iPad or tablet anymore. I am unsure of what it is now. Yes it runs iOS but is it still an iPad? o_Oo_Oo_O lol

I guess I'm kind of happy it wasn't updated for my own selfish reasons (mine is less out of date). But overall I wouldn't have cared if they updated it. It would have made my next upgrade a couple years from now be a more worthy purchase.

Long term I would also be worried for the fate of the product category if Apple begins to think that it's "OK" to skip upgrading a device for a year. I would rather have Apple spend resources on updates and build energy in an ecosystem for my device; rather than put it on Apple's dreaded "hobby" holding pattern.

It is a disease...what's the word for it?
Ipad air 2 is a beast..regardless of 1 year old. It's like iPad 2nd gen...

Is A9 dual core? Apple would have a good time marketing a dual core A9 iPad when A8X was already tri core. Remember iPad Air had A7. This goes back to my hunch that A8X was really meant for the iPad pro last year but it was delayed and ended up in Air 2. Next iteration with a throttled down version of A9X as an update? Unlikely this year, maybe next spring or more likely A10 in the fall

Some people don't appreciate having the feeling of having the latest and greatest, it's a shallow thing some of us do me included and it's not even to show off to other people, my IPad rarely leaves the house. It's some internal need we think we need to fill. Apple puts out something significantly new and different a hole opens up, it becomes a goal to fill that hole with that product. A lot of people live mundane lives a constant routine of work, kids, friends, TV, you name it I'm just saying most likely what you do on Monday is gonna resemble Tuesday, so getting something new and expensive can sadly become pretty exciting. I prly honestly get more excited about launch days then I do Xmas, or friends birthdays (no annoying relatives, I get the present today) call me selfish I admit it. That release of dopamine when launch day comes and the delivery driver finally knocks and you get to unwrap that clean looking white box, lifting the lid to reveal greatness. Some of us just get more excited then others.

I wasn't disappointed by Apple not upgrading the Air 2, but please believe the Pro makes me feel a slight hole might grow. The air 2 just doesn't feel like the latest and I'd be lying to myself pretending there wasn't something better, faster, newer out there. I might simply purchase it just to have the new iPad and something different. A bigger screen might be nice it might also be too much and the current Air 2 is the sweet spot for me. This is a rare one where I might wait to hold it in hand until I decide to purchase, if it feels overwhelming in any way or that I couldn't comfortably lay back and causally browse the web I'll skip it.

I'm very happy. I bought mine back in March and I'm very pleased they didn't upgrade it and kept the price the same. These tablets don't need to be upgraded on a yearly basis.
As for that iPad Pro I'm not interested. Way to expensive, to big and the Apple pencil (what a stupid name) is a accessory that is expensive, not built in and the charging method is ridiculous. And that knock of surface keyboard case is a joke.

Oddly enough Tesla doesn't follow that mindset. They release a new car ''when they feel like it''. The problem with yearly upgrades is that the potential to ''wow'' is lessened.

This is actually sad and is how I felt for a little bit.

The thing is, the more I started doing things with my left, the less I care about upgrades. This is the first year that I did NOT want to upgrade my iPhone. I'm focusing on so much that it's hard to keep having ''that void filled''.

I realized how much money I waste buy getting ''the latest and greatest'' when my current gadgets fill my needs.
