I agree - I think this a general reflection of the "halo" effect from iPhone. Typically MS folk get an iPhone, like what they see, and start buying into the Apple ecosystem. Meanwhile MS are moving slowly and with misguided leadership from Ballmer (IMO). The future is certainly interesting. If Jobs does not come back then Apple might face a less certain future after these current crop of products expire and the inspiration is not there. I heard Johnny Ives also wants to move back to the UK and may leave Apple (perhaps he could head up MS instead LOL).
Let's be straight up. Apple hardware, software, and general design is SEXY. Sex sells in various forms.

Once you get past the beauty of the OS, you can appreciate the design aspect and general "flow" of the operating system.
Microsoft tries hard, but they keep failing. Windows 7 was a valiant effort, and tbh, memory management is far superior to that of Windows Vista. Microsoft has always relied on being "flexible" to virtually any application or hardware in existence. As the amount of compatibility increases for OS X every year, they must be somewhat worried.
Microsoft relies on HP, Dell, et al, to build quality laptops/desktops for their OS to run on.
Providing technical support for Dell, I can tell you that virtually the only customers out there who can tolerate the hiccups of PC downtime, are PC Gamers, and hardware enthusiasts. All of your other customers "just want it to work". Tolerance for downtime is very low. I can also tell you the quality of Dell Inspirons/Dimensions are very low-grade. In order to buy "quality" you still need to pay $1500-2000, which is exactly where Apple is.
Innovation at Microsoft is lacking, and they need an explosion equivalent from the jump from 98 to XP (Let's just pretend ME never existed) to entice pc users.
Overall when you combined the hardware design and rock solid OS X, we have a clear winner.
While Steve Jobs health is a concern, I'm confident there are enough innovative folks that work at Apple who will gladly take on the challenge.
