Yep, 2011 13" MBP is my first Mac ever. Last time I used a mac regularly was back in high school, late 90s, when I used telnet and pine for email.

But by no means am I switching. I just needed a new laptop and liked the build quality and trackpad of the MBP over comparable PC models.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I never really used a Mac except for an old green screen back in 1st grade (25 now). I just couldn't get over how poor the PC build quality was at a comparable price to Mac. I kind of wanted a Vaio Z but can't justify the $1800 price point when I could get a 15" Macbook Pro with High Res for the same price. I just went for the 13" base Pro. More than enough for my web browsing and media, but I wanted a great screen and shell and Apple was the only way to go.

I would like to buy one today. I tried to buy one the other day from MacMall, not in stock. I tried to buy from Apple Store yesterday, but MacMall had a pre auth hold on my card so my card was declined. Went to Apple Store this morning, and now the Apple Store is down! argghh!

I want my :apple:!

This is my 1st MBP, 1st apple product and 1st laptop ever, purchased October 2010. Coming from a long (and painful) line of Dell desktops. Yeah it's a breath of fresh air - both in hardware and software!

Have since converted my parents to an iMac, also from a Dell, and a long time Asus/HP hardcore friend of mine is getting an iPad 2 as soon as it's out - his 1st ever Apple product as well, influenced by my MBP.

I agree - I think this a general reflection of the "halo" effect from iPhone. Typically MS folk get an iPhone, like what they see, and start buying into the Apple ecosystem. Meanwhile MS are moving slowly and with misguided leadership from Ballmer (IMO). The future is certainly interesting. If Jobs does not come back then Apple might face a less certain future after these current crop of products expire and the inspiration is not there. I heard Johnny Ives also wants to move back to the UK and may leave Apple (perhaps he could head up MS instead LOL).

Let's be straight up. Apple hardware, software, and general design is SEXY. Sex sells in various forms. :p Once you get past the beauty of the OS, you can appreciate the design aspect and general "flow" of the operating system.

Microsoft tries hard, but they keep failing. Windows 7 was a valiant effort, and tbh, memory management is far superior to that of Windows Vista. Microsoft has always relied on being "flexible" to virtually any application or hardware in existence. As the amount of compatibility increases for OS X every year, they must be somewhat worried.

Microsoft relies on HP, Dell, et al, to build quality laptops/desktops for their OS to run on.

Providing technical support for Dell, I can tell you that virtually the only customers out there who can tolerate the hiccups of PC downtime, are PC Gamers, and hardware enthusiasts. All of your other customers "just want it to work". Tolerance for downtime is very low. I can also tell you the quality of Dell Inspirons/Dimensions are very low-grade. In order to buy "quality" you still need to pay $1500-2000, which is exactly where Apple is.

Innovation at Microsoft is lacking, and they need an explosion equivalent from the jump from 98 to XP (Let's just pretend ME never existed) to entice pc users.

Overall when you combined the hardware design and rock solid OS X, we have a clear winner.

While Steve Jobs health is a concern, I'm confident there are enough innovative folks that work at Apple who will gladly take on the challenge.

After many years of wishing, the mbp i just bought was my first one (= its crazy how my ipod touch 2g lasted longer than my pc laptop. I love my computer =D

1st for me

It's my first MBP. My friends all swear by them so I got one, and I love it! I traded in my mid-09 iMac for this, and WOW, what a difference!

The iPhone is ruling the market and I do believe customers such as myself being introduced to the iPhone has in part played a decision to buy a mac laptop as their next purchase.

- I think this is pretty accurate. I sometimes chuckle a little over Apple's strategy with this - it's just so brilliant! I purchased an iPod touch in december 2008, then i got the iPhone 3GS in summer 2009, then the iPhone 4 in summer 2010, and now a MacBook Pro 15" a couple of days ago... Once you start with the Apple products, you will never stop! :)

Haha how true! Here was my progression:

1) 3rd Generation iPod Touch
(me thinking: huh..nice little fun MP3 player, great design, hmmm..)

2) 27in iMac i5
(holy &%*)

3) 32GB iPad Wifi (day 1)
(neat! at this point I have switched to Apple enthusiast/fanboy mode)

4) Verizion iPhone 4 32GB
(best phone evaaa)

5) 2011 MacBook Pro 13" i5 (day 1)
(yep, its official I love :apple: )

first mac

This will be my first Mac. I'm basically buying one in hopes it lasts longer than my other laptops.

I was a pc user since I began using computers, so I got my first Macbook pro this year, before the refresh and I'm enjoying it:p

Mac rocks!!!

If anyone is a PC gfx designer, please say what your going to do about your Adobe suite... gonna stick with windows or switch them to Mac?

If you're at the current version, the switch is free; you just have to call. If you are one or two versions back, they will give you an upgrade price and switch you to a new key -- but will mail out the full retail version of your new platform at the upgrade price.

(a new 2011 17" is my second MBP after 20+ years of MS... well 3rd MBP if you count my wife's)

After years of faithful Windows based laptop purchases this past thursday I purchased an older iBook G4. I figured I'd go cheap so if Apple wasn't a fit for me I had only spent a little. Now only four days later I have a MacBook Pro on order. I never thought I would say it but Mac OS just works.

Yep, that mirrors my thoughts exactly. I also looked at the Vaio Z but shied away from the price.

Many folks here posted about how utterly disgusted they are that Apple didn't upgrade the MBP screen resolutions. 1280x800 for the 13" and 1440x900 for the 15"? Blasphemy! But looking at comparable PC notebooks, the typical 15" resolution is 1366x768. That's about what my 5-year old Dell has.

12" and 13.3" PC also have 1366x768 screens, but I could not find a single one that I wanted. One that was powerful enough had a flexy keyboard and tiny touchpad, another had good build construction but lousy battery life, one had a nice touchpad but was over 1" thick and with terrible construction.

My first Mac computer of any kind - been an iPhone owner since day one. I worked for Intel when they were PC-only, and I've always been a PC guy. But just like my switch from domestic cars, I can't imagine owning another PC.

I'll be a first time Mac owner as soon as I can decide between iMac and MBP (There is a chance I might wait for the iMac to be refreshed). Anyways, its obvious a lot of people including myself are converting to Mac. It's sexy, stable, everything seems to work so well together. BUT.... I'm wondering though, when will virus and malware start to become a real problem? With all the comments about how PC and/or Windows "fail" compared to Mac/OSX, people lose sight of the fact of just how lopsided the numbers still are. I'm just wondering/worried when making the jump to Mac that if things do start going wrong and all of these genius hackers actually start setting their sights on OSX, I won't know how to fix it like I currently do with Windows

Two thoughts on this:

1> if it was possible to trojan or remotely infect a Mac, some hacker would've released it by now -- for the lulz in being the first to do it. There have been some holes in Adobe Reader and Safari but nothing in OS X that I'm aware of. While the prize for getting Macs remotely infected isn't as great, the fame for being the first to do it should be motivation enough for people to try.

2> Some people will argue that due to the Unix underpinnings, it will be very difficult to remotely infect a Mac without the user expressly putting in the root password for software to install -- so you have to be complicit in the attack.

This will be my first laptop (I'm a senior in college, so it's a miracle I've lasted this long). I have a 2006 20" 2.33Ghz core2duo imac. It rocked initially, but the last year or so I've had problems. It started crashing a lot, then stopped working. I replaced the hdd and it worked fine for about 6 months, but when I did that, one of my ram sticks wasn't being read anymore. I don't know if it's the port or a stick. when i flip them around, one still works, so that still isn't much help. But, in the last few months, it's started doing what it did before. Crashes between once every couple days, to where it's every 10 minutes. I don't know if it's the ram, something on the logic board, or (doubtfully) the new hdd. Even with my new mbp, it'd be nice to get this fixed so i could either give away, or sell it for $500ish online. Otherwise, it's just a parts computer, though I still see them sell for a couple hundred online.
