Macs have the best trackpad by far, but I pack a mouse (and a full size wired one at that) for when I have "serious" work to do.

I do with a Windows Laptop, but not with the MacbookPro, the Trackpad is just as good as a mouse. And at home i use a Magic Trackpad anyway.

Can I ask those who use mice while travelling: what mouse do you recommend?

I'm happy with any old cheap, small mouse, but the one thing I can't stand is that they all give you over a meter of cable. Argggh!!!

The mouse is going to be immediately adjacent to the laptop. Always!!!!! 0.5m would be the absolute maximum cable. (I'd rather not have to keep changing batteries either.)

I carry my Apple Magic Mouse with me. Thin, light and no cable.

With the MBP, never.
With the work-issued PC laptop, always. Being used to a MBP trackpad, there's no way I can use a tiny, non-responsive PC trackpad anymore. Call me spoiled :D

Totally out of topic, having recently moved from a 2008 pre-unibody to a 2012, I miss the trackpad button on the latter. Resting my thumb on the lower part of the trackpad, as I did on the pre-unibody button, often creates position glitches of the pointer. Anyone else in this case?

Cheers,
ETN

I don't have a laptop, but occasionally use one to score matches for the local cricket league.... so here is my take.

If I am lucky enough to be using a Mac Pro I am happy to use the trackpad. I still have a slight preference for using a mouse, probably from habit more than anything. If I had to carry the thing around, I guess I would soon be travelling sans mouse.

More usually I have used the club's Acer, and cannot get along with the trackpad on that machine. I bought a mouse to leave with it.

Hi,

I, too, carry a tiny USB mouse with me on the road, the reason being that I occasionally need to use a Linux vector graphics program designed for a three button mouse, and I find the trackpad and magic mouse emulation difficult to operate --- it's probably just me though.

I'm a big fan of the MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000. Great mouse...I'm very productive with it (seriously).

I carry a mouse but rarely ever use it unless I'm playing a game. The trackpad is amazing enough for me.

I used to a long time ago but I found myself continuously in situations where I didn't have my mouse. So, I forced myself to always use the trackpad while on the go so I didn't feel handicapped when I didn't have my mouse. Now, I'm as proficient with the trackpad as with a mouse and don't see a need to bring a mouse with me anymore.

The exception would be if I were going on a long trip. I'd bring a small mouse then but only for when I wanted to play a game.

I bring my Magic Mouse and (don't laugh) a small wrist pad in a pocket in my bag.

I never use a mouse with my Mac, because I find the odd shelf acceleration curve incredibly frustrating. Much prefer the trackpad in that case.

When travelling with my work laptop (Windows), I do bring a mouse. The trackad on it is also horrible...

My Magic Mouse. It's light, thin, and easy to carry, not to mention easy on the eyes. I've gotten to the point where I'm so reliant on it that I'm reluctant to use my Mac with my trackpad, just because things are far more efficiently done with my mouse.

Battery life on this thing is amazing. I bought it and used the stock battery for 2-months. This is with heavy usage every single day of the week. Comparing that to my old Bluetooth mouse that lasted me 3-weeks, at best if I reserved it.
