Age - 21 Weeks
Cycles - 42
Health - 94%

Can someone update me on how the "age" is calculated, because I have not had my mac 21 weeks, its been exactly 8 weeks since I picked it up from the apple store and turned it on for the first time.

Have I been sold a returned Macbook?

The age calculation can be a little off. It is based on when it was built not when it was sold.

CoconutBattery calculates the age based on the serial number. More info here...

It used to be way off, but it has gotten better with the updates.

How did you get them them to replace it under warranty? Isn't 14 months out if warranty?

I did show up at the Apple Store within my warranty period, but since they told me it might take a week to do repairs- as testing and symptoms indicated I might have a RAM and/or SSD issue too- I would have to wait to leave it with them. Since the issues were documented in time, they told me it's not an issue.

Age: 9 months
Cycles: 377
Health: 87%

I am shocked how bad my stats are compared to other posters. Is there anyway to improve my battery's health? Can its percentage rise? Thanks.

I would suggest that you bring your laptop into an Apple Store and let them run a diagnostic before your warranty runs out. Even though my capacity never went below 87%- which it did at 7 months- and short of the stated 80% threshold, it tested faulty anyway and is slated for replacement.

FWIW, Coconut Battery had the capacity drop to 87%, then run back as high as 94% before going back into the upper 80's, where it remains.

Thank you. Your post was a great help!

What's the definition of a cycle?

What's the minimum loss of life before classified as a cycle once plugged in and chagred?

1 cycle = 1 full charge + 1 full discharge

After 1000 cycles your battery reaches 80% of its original capacity, so there is no need to think about loss of life per cycle. Just enjoy the great battery life :)

Read the WHAT IS A CYCLE? section of the following link. The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.
1 cycle = 1 full charge + 1 full discharge
Or 4 discharges/recharges, using 25% each time. Or 2 discharges/recharges, using 50% each time.
After 1000 cycles your battery reaches 80% of its original capacity
That's not necessarily true. It could reach 80% or below before 1000 cycles, or it could take many more than 1000 cycles before it reaches 80%. Read the Battery FAQ for facts.

at 7 cycles my capacity was 95% (4454 mAh), now at 8 cycles my capacity is 96% (4510 mAh) I guess I have a self healing battery in mine. all data provided from coconut battery 2.8

No, it's normal for the battery health to fluctuate up and down over time, as stated in the Battery FAQ.

You're averaging about 1.5 cycles per week, which is good activity. Your battery is almost 5 years old, so you've gotten good life out of it. They're not designed to last forever, no matter how you take care of it. It's still usable at 79%, so you should be pleased with the life you've gotten from it.

14 months

Use this thing everyday for university. Have AppleCare should the battery ever die or health drops prematurely

Yeah, that's why I used the word full but emphasising how it does not have to be continuous may help others :)

Just quoted Apple on that to give an idea. Of course, there is no way to tell how many exact cycles it will take.

My 11" Air is getting to be just about 1 year old.. I'd say we're about a week from the 1-month marker. Here's a heavy user's report:

Cycles: 305
Health: 90%

So realistically, Apple's 5 hour rating should last about 4.5 hours still. Being that I'm usually pushing this thing, I'd say my 2.5-3 hours (full bright+100% processor, typically) should last 2:15-2:45.

I've yet to feel any change; unlike my old 15" C2D macbook. At 280 cycles, I was down to less than 1/2 the original charge. Ouch.

Quite happy with mine, I generally run it on battery more often than not :) The age is pretty close, purchased in in late September last year.

Oh I'm not complaining at all. I'm actually very happy with battery life and even surprised its still this good.

I never bought it for heavy lifting, just portability email, reading PDFs documents (which has since become an iPad task) ect. I still love the keyboard and its my preferred typing computer.

I bought my new MBA not long ago, but the current capacity is already at 96%

Is there something wrong with my battery or this is considered to be normal?
thanks :)
