my c2d macbook pro is still at 91% after 3+ years

been pretty anal about it tho, barely used it unplugged

Hows My Battery?

Age: 6 Years, 1 Month
Current: 4085mAh
Original: 5020mAh

Capacity fluctuates between 75%-80%

I feel like thats pretty good for over 6 years.

Only issue is that the batter is swelling. I heard that so long as it says "Replace Soon" in the battery tray, they are likely to replace it, and I feel that I have an extremely low cycle count, and good health for such an old battery...

do you think I have a chance to get a new batter courtesy of Apple?

6 year old battery? Not a chance you will get a new one for free. Not after 6 years. Never hurts to try, though! Worst thing they can say is "No" (they might look at you like you're a little "eccentric" too.)

Aren't they suppose to last about 1000 cycles before they drop below 80%?

Designed to, not guaranteed to. Plus, we're talking about a 6 year battery here, which means it's not using Lithium Polymer, it's the older Lithium Ion style battery. But, regardless which style battery it is, 6 years of use and then to expect a free replacement is pretty much asking for a miracle. ... unless (light bulb just went on over my head) there was a safety recall on them (possible), you would have to pay for a replacement.

I'd check to see if there were any safety recalls on it, as that would be pretty much the only chance of getting a free replacement on one that's so old.

My old MBP still has its original battery. I will have to get my dad to look up the battery health on it when the last step is done to get it running again. Since I've upgraded, my dad seems to want it. I am not sure. When it is back to running correctly without problems, I bet I would be able to get a pretty fair deal since most of the parts will be brand new. We'll see.

I'm currently at 78% after 159 cycles. My 13" MBP Unibody is about 2.5 years old, plugged in 24 hours a day mostly.

Not sure why the performance is so bad this time round. My 1st gen MBA was above 90% after this amount of cycles.

Can I do anything to "calibrate" it seems unibodies don't need calibrating.

Here's why:

Run on battery whenever you need to and plug it in whenever you can. You can plug or unplug any time you need to, regardless of the charged percentage, and you never need to completely drain your battery. Just make sure you don't run on AC power exclusively, as your battery needs to be used regularly to stay healthy. The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.

The built-in batteries in the newer Mac unibody notebooks come pre-calibrated and do not require regular calibration like the removable batteries in older Apple notebooks.

Got it thanks very much. And here I was thinking it was better not to use the battery.
My previous Macbook Air was used more as a portable. bringing it around school, lectures, meetings etc.
These days my MB P only gets unplugged perhaps once a week or sometimes less.

Will get the new MB next week since the price is quite affordable. will aim to keep the electrons flowing!

Almost 3 years old and still going strong!

My old MacBook has 1570 cycles and 88% battery capacity (4418mAh). Not that it gets much use anymore ;)

My new rMBP 15"

25 loadcycles, 100% capacity (8460 mAh)

I had a 2010 mpb battery fail completely in under 6 months ('genius' insisted normal and not covered under warranty).

My 2008 mbp battery was still excellent up until this january, when I left the laptop switched off for too long (a week with no power) and it killed it.

So, good and bad..

I'm crossing my fingers for this new mbp since the battery is hardwired into the case - if it's a 6 month'er I'll be pissed.

Following up from my post last week, my MB P is now at 160 cycles, and I'm definitely letting it run on battery more often now. Im happy to report that 2 cycles later my health has gone up 3% to 81%!

Gonna let it run more and see if I can bump it higher.

If I can reach 85% I'll be very happy :)

So based on what I'm seeing here it is ok to run my new MBA on battery almost every day?

I used to use my old MBP primary plugged in but this new MBA is so convenient and light it just begs to be unplugged. So I use it at least 4-5 times a week on battery although I usually don't run it all the way down.

I'm at 95% battery with 27 cycles and I've only had the computer since the beginning of January (~2 months).

I'm hoping that with my current usage I should still have decent (~6hr) battery life after a year. Does that seem reasonable based on other peoples' experiences?
