One more thought, maybe you should email Steve Jobs directly and describe your case? Some people reported doing just that, with good results. I don't remember the address, but it should be somewhere in the archives (something like steve.jobs@apple.com, or something). And no, I don't think it goes to Steve Jobs inbox directly...:D

Tom B.

Actually, I did. I sent an email to sjobs and to one of the customer service managers that helped me return two of my computers. I expected that jobs would never get back to me, but neither did the cs manager. Very disappointing.

I sent a very polite letter describing the issues Ive had and how I'm disappointed by the entire experience. I never expressed any anger and was never rude and she didn't even respond to my email.

When did she start not responding to you? I've been working with a CS manager for about a month now and last week he stopped returning my calls.

Just got my fourth one from Fedex... Fingers crossed. Last chance before I return it completely.

Good luck - I just got my third and I am keeping it. It has one dead pixel and light to medium yellowing issues but I don't think I have a chance of doing much better. Has the WD harddrive too and it is absolutely silent... I hope yours ends up being acceptable

Just set everything up. Doesn't set off any of my usual red flags- damage/ yellow/ grey band. Looks good.

Seems a bit louder at idle than my other ones but maybe just nitpicking now.

Keeping it. Phew. 1 month after launch and 3 exchanges later finally got a system that was decent... Sigh.

What model cd drive did you guys get? I got a pioneer. I believe the previous ones had hitachi.

Congrats moocat haha we finally made it.

Just got a yellow tint imac i7 today and sent it back for a replacement. This happened to me last year but I gave up on last year's model due to the delay in manufacturing (4 weeks). Hopefully my next screen is perfect - it's really a shame Apple can't figure out what the hell is wrong with their screens.

1. HD failure
2. HD failure
3. Power source failure
4. Cracked screen on arrival
5. Dog whistle noise and power source in process of failing
6. CPU fan never dropped below 2000 rpm
7. Bent stand and lint behind the screen
8. 1/3 of screen went black after 1 day
9. ???

1% return rate that some are quoting seems a little on the slim side. And, for those that will say I'm an OCD crazy person, I purchased a MacBook, iPad, ipod touch, and time capsule this year too. All of them are perfect, never had a single problem. This is definitely an imac problem.

I thought it was a conspiracy theory the first time that someone on this forum mentioned it, but I'm starting to wonder if apple is giving refurbs to customers who return a computer. I know its illegal, and I didn't believe it the first time I heard it. But, it does seem that you either get a perfect computer the first time, or you end up playing the return game until you get tired. From a business perspective it makes sense. The money that you make selling back returns as new will far exceed the fine the government will impose if you get caught doing it. He'll, Dell just got caught for it not to long ago. Anyway, to add fuel to the fire, two of my brand "brand new computers" had a mouse with initials that arnt mine. How did that happen? Pretty sure the mouse didn't change its name between here and NE.

Like I said above, I was getting a strange feeling that apple was sending me a referb each time that I exchanged one of these things. I mean seriously, there is no way that Apple is producing a computer so sub par that 8 should fail in the first two weeks of operation.

So, rather than exchanging for my 9th iMac, I just returned the one that I bought online and went and picked one up in the local apple store. That way I knew that there was no way I was getting a refurb. And what do you know, as far as I can tell, this thing is perfect. Its the best one I've seen yet, barring any major catastrophes in the next few days.

Does it get worse with time??

My second 27 here is at the moment fine, no tint issue only a very faint greyish nuance at the bottom, hardly noticable. BUT, Ive had it for 3 months and still great.
However, does all these problems get worse with time? cause if it does, well then we all might be in trouble.

Received my 3rd mid 2010 27" i7 2.93GHz yesterday, previous two were returned for the buzzing PSU issue, this one still has the problem and I can't be bothered to return another one, hoping for a firmware fix:eek:

On the plus side, it has the WD HDD and a good screen!

I got the pioneer as well. Glad it all worked out for you.

27" i7:
The first one had dust under the screen and dead 'on' pixels
The second one has dust under the screen (a hair?) and a dead 'on' pixel

Both imacs are very dim and the 100% brightness is comparable to about 30% on the i5 I had previously. Not sure whether to go on replacing for dust/hair under the screen. It's not a logical option to go to the store and get it cleaned, it'd be a challenge/mug threat to lug this mother of a computer on public transport to the genius bar in central London.

I'm pretty curious about something

I have a new yellow-tinted i7 and am still within the 14-day window. I'm going to take it in this weekend to have the screen looked at, but I have been reading through the forums and would actually prefer to have my screen replaced than have the whole iMac replaced with a new one. I got the iMac online (custom built because of wired keyboard only) and I feel like if I ask for a replacement, there is always a chance that a new one will take longer to ship and end up having similar problems (or new ones, like a noisy HD or what have you).

So my question is: Why do most customers with a brand new machine tend to want the whole unit replaced instead of just replacing the problematic part? Is it simply because paying over $2000 makes one expect a problem-free Mac, or is there another reason I should be aware of? Right now, if the store offers to replace the screen, I don't see any reason why not (it seems like a safer bet, and faster), unless there's some other reason not to fix and just get a brand new unit? Thanks!

Had a flickering i5 last November, returned it.

Just bought a new i7. But...
I have a speck of dust trapped in the LCD panel in my new i7. Will Apple replace the panel for free if I take it in to an Apple Store? I don't want a replacement, my i7 is otherwise phenomenal - Western Digital HD, no loud buzzing or whining.

Often, the monitors that they replace it with STILL have yellow tint and many times worse than what they orignally had. Once you have the monitor replaced, it can't be returned for a rfund to Apple. THAT is why. By returning you reset the 14 day window.

Zero. I bought a refurb i7 2009 iMac. Seemed perfect when I first got it, but just discovered a dead pixel on the screen. With all the comments about how many screen problems people have with each of their replacements plus the fact the machine had a bigger hard drive than it was supposed to, I think I can live with one dead pixel that is an inch away from the edge near the bottom right corner of the screen. Besides, it is not noticable during a video or while playing a game. Only during a static screen that is bright white or grey.

I just got back from vacation and fired up #2. I am considering gong for round 3. The yellowing does not seem as bad as #1, but close. The gray banding is much better on this one. My first BTO had teh WD 1TB, this one has the clunky Seagate crap.

This one does not have a cracked LCD though, thumbs up for that.

The yellowing on this one seems to be more of a left to right, and not top to bottom issue like #1.

Should I just accept this iMac the way it is? It could get worse with #3, and the noisy HD will not be an issue, as I have decided to put in dual SSD's. A 100GB unit for the OS and Apps, and a 256GB unit for current project work. All other data will be archived off onto my 2TB WD Studio and then backed up to my HP MediaSmart server.

It was easy to return the 1st unit due to the cracked LCD and the bad gray banding. This one might just be as good as it gets (for the display) The display is as good as I have seen at my local stores. This one has worse yellowing than the best one I have seen, but less gray banding....... 6 of one, and 1/2 dozen of the other.............

It is good to have the iMac back though. Having to ship it back to Apple and wait for the replacement really, really sucks.

BTW, this is a BTO i7 with 8GB.

I just came back with a NEW iMac after Apple tried to replace my Seagate HDD which as making a ton of noise and they SCRATCHED up the bezel and the leg support. Ouch! I was thinking along the same line as you. I had a perfect unit otherwise with a non-yellow screen and no dead or stuck pixels. But guess what? The new unit is perfect. Even the Seagate HDD is much, much quieter.

Geez, who the heck are building these machines, a bunch of poor Chinese peasants trapped in a sweat shop?
The profit margins for apple on these units must be enormous.

I called apple about an extended warranty on a mbp for my son, and was connected to some guy in India who couldn't get his numbers straight. They all sounded way too high, and he kept trying to get me to buy it on the spot from him, but I had lost confidence in his ability so I hung up and went to a local apple store and was quoted a price over 100 pounds less.
Something seems to have gone seriously wrong with apple quality control and customer services.

For a company making complex electronic gadgets in tiny form factors, they need to do a better job in design and manufacture.
You read these forums and you see repeated complaints about iMac screens and iphone antennas and uneven mbp lids, etc.
It wasn't this bad three years ago.

I have decided that I cannot live with this yellow tint and I will be sending iMac #2 back.

If I can replace it in store, I will replace it. If they force me to send it back in, they can have it back and they can give me my $2500 back. I am not going to wait another week and a half for another replacement that has a good chance of being just as bad.

This really is BS!!!

For those that do not have issues, or are happy with your iMacs I am happy for you.

I don't have issues, but I too have the yellow tint problem on my 11-day old 27". I have an appointment tomorrow at the genius bar. I only want them to replace the screen. Mine was a BTO from apple.com. I don't want to wait for a replacement, and doing a repair by swapping out the defective part will satisfy me. Thanks to those above for your comments in response to my earlier question.
