Which means you rely totally on wifi to use features like safari, mail, etc.

I ask because if you have data off then what do you do to get basic features that require data?

Specifically, I'm talking about voicemail notification which you can only get if you have data turned on. Being connected to wifi does not get you voicemail notification.

*Note: I am not talking about getting the voicemail. I'm talking about being notified that you have a voicemail message. I'm also not talking about visual voicemail which requires data. I'm talking about just getting the red dot on the voicemail tab in the phone app that tells you that you have a voicemail. This happens on iOS 8.1

If you miss a call and that person leaves a message then you'll never know that you have a voicemail unless you just happen to check you voicemail, but by then it might be days or weeks since the person left you that message. Just wondering what you guys do or maybe you don't care to know whether someone left you a voicemail.

Hey, thanks for starting this thread. I just reviewed our data plan and realized we are overpaying for data we're not using. I just downgraded to a Verizon 1GB/ month shared data plan, which is still 2X what we're using on average.

I wish we canadians had the american priced plans. currently on a 2gb plan 90$ I leave my data on all the time, rarely go over, and if I do go over it doesn't charge me that much

On all the time

my data is on all the time on LTE. Being on T-Mobile i also get unlimited worldwide 3G data, so when i board an international flight, before the boarding door is closed, i enable roaming and switch off LTE, and then put on Airplane mode and Wi-Fi enabled. On Delta flights gogoinflight provides free texting for Tmobile customers, even on international fights, without having to purchase an internet pass. One needs to enable Wi-Fi calling for the texting to work.

I had to switch data off on my iPhone 5 unless I needed it because the battery absolutely sucked if I left it on. Thankfully with the 6+ I can leave it on permanently and still get over 10 hours.

I finally got to experience this from flying out to Dallas a few weeks ago. Full texting in flight, worked like a charm.

You mean 2G for the unlimited international data

I can't say I have data on ALL the time, because I dont. I mean 90% of the time it's on but there are times where I am 1. In a dead spot for extended periods of time, so I'm just looking to save battery, or 2. About to hit my data limit so I shut off data on my phone entirely.

Outside the UK , definitely off to take advantage of free wifi at the hotels. Sometimes I switch to wifi @ home or work if it appears I may go over my monthly data allowance

I'm curious, why would you not always use Wi-Fi at home and work?

I never turn off my data, but since I'm always on Wi-Fi at home and work I only actually use data when I'm out.

For me, data is always on. Without it I feel like I'm not really using a smartphone.

Background refresh is only of for a select few apps. I leave weather off since I don't mind waiting a second for it to refresh when I'm checking it. I use Yahoo Weather - awesome backgrounds and superb for multiple locations.

My old contract was only 1GB , so I tend to use wifi when I can. However I've now renewed to a 3GB data tariff...would probably only need to switch to wifi when am away

Data off, WiFi off.
Data is turned on only when I need it. I don't have voicemail, just don't like it, e-mails can be checked on my PC at work anytime. I don't use FB and don't Tweet.
WiFi is the same. I have everything at my hand at work.
At home I use my PCs, MacBook, why would I keep my iPhone's Data or WiFi on?
I use these features only when I need them and there is no other alternative.

Do you have an even smaller limit on your WiFi? I still don't see why WiFi wouldn't be your default and you switch to data when you have to. That's what the phone will do automatically anyway unless one is turned off.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why do you even have an iPhone?

It's ok.

At home I use computers (home network), so there is no need to have WiFi on on my iPhone as I can read my e-mails on my PC(s). Same goes to Data traffic. And it is much more comfortable to read and to answer on a Mac.
At work the situation is the same, I have PCs where I can read my e-mails anytime I want. Same goes to Data traffic.
In between those two places I am not really interested in e-mails, if anyone wants to reach me with something that is important then they can call or text.
As I have mentioned I don't use FB, voicemail and don't tweet. So, what would be the reasons for me to keep Data and WiFi on permanently?

P.S.: Data and WiFi are always there as an alternative in certain circumstances. And those situations are when I use this options.

That's cool, I'm just saying that if you're not using any of the online functionality of your phone, why not just get a much cheaper "dumbphone" or budget smartphone?

Well, maybe I was not completely clear in my posts. I didn't say that I don't use at all the "online functions". I use them where there is no other alternative and I need to get data online. It means that those functions are not turned on on permanent basis. So, these functions are turned on when I need them.
Why not a "dumb phone"? Two reasons:

1. I always have the chance to use the "online functions" when needed.
2. There are applications that I use on daily basis and are available only for smartphones.

Me thinks we might have the same now or better

I wish we canadians had the american priced plans. currently on a 2gb plan 90$ I leave my data on all the time, rarely go over, and if I do go over it doesn't charge me that much

My plan is 90/month 6G date free north American calling/long distance and txt
Call display & voice mail

Data always on as my wife and I share 15gb and will likely never hit half that.
If I was on the min data however, I would be stingy as can be.
