I'm eagerly awaiting new Apple displays before I buy a new 2009 octad 2.66 Mac Pro...

What are other new buyers doing? Going with the old Apple 30? The glossy 24?

Why no choices, Apple?

I bought the glossy 24" LED and have not been disappointed. Can't compare with other Mac displays as it is my first Mac, but I can say that it is a significant improvement over the Dell display I used to use.

Yes when your mbp or whatever is connected to the 24" LED ACD and u ONLY want to power down the 24" ACD press and hold eject button + shift + control. and just press any key or move your mouse to wake the display back up.

I love it!

Awesome! I'd like to have the option to turn of the LED display and have my Mac Pro running still.

Question though.... does the display wake up if the computer is running software? For example, if I were to access iTunes via the remote control on my iPhone, would that trigger the display to wake up?

I guess worst case scenario is I put the display on a separate power bar and literally kill the power to it when I want to.

I have the LED display sitting it the box right now waiting for the Mac Pro to arrive!

Mac Pro will run just fine with any software just like normal, only the display is turned off by doing the eject + control + shift command.

I've also tried this with a 15" unibody mbp connected to the 24" LED ACD and the mbp still runs fine (I leave torrents uploading and d/ling all night) and only the display is turned off and in this case dual monitor mode both the 15" monitor and the 24" LED ACD displays are fully off.

Excellent. That is perfect. I started to worry when I found out the display had no power switch. But if the display only awakens on mouse or keyboard activity, that's is totally cool.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm getting pumped for the new MP!

No problem! It is THAT perfect! You get so used to using that command (its like playing the piano hitting notes that takes a split second its actually pretty cool) that you'll be turning off and on your cinema display all the time. On top of that the instant full brightness led backlighting is awesome!

Still holding out, waiting for that "perfect" 24-inch LCD.

Hopefully we'll see something released from the display manufacturers soon, like an LED backlit IPS with great response times and color gamut at a reasonable price.

I will not be purchasing Apple's overpriced mirror....I mean 24" LCD. My Syncmaster 191T is still going strong, but it really really really wants to be a secondary display in portrait mode.

I bought DELL ULTRASHARP 2408WFP for my new Mac Pro 2.66. The Apple display way to much expensive.

A little obfuse statement, but I'm in agreement. I love the Apple Displays, but I recently grabbed a DS-263N on the cheap that is comparable to an NEC  and so far its beat out my old Acer AL2216W. Since I do not have a colour calibrator, I had to grab a profile online (colour out-of-box is not as hot as the ACDs) Would have grabbed a Sony FW900 for a little bit more payment, but.... the shipping on a 92-lb monitor with insurance killed the prospect.:(

Now all I need is the MacPro to connect it to :D

Dell and HP have some outstanding displays, as does Samsung. Plus, their frame dimension is a LOT smaller than Apple's fat-assed frames. Makes it awkward to do a dual monitor without it looking like a patchwork quilt.

Plus Apple's displays are 50% overpriced anyway.

Honestly I think the Dell 2408 is too expensive for what it is. An inferior S-PVA panel with no led for around $500 no thank you.

Actually for a 24" LED backlit H-ips panel for $799 (student discount) comes out to $865 with tax and the 24" ACD is the best price for the best technology. Other LED displays costs $1500-$1800 with inferior panels.

But I do agree that the current 30" Cinema display is over priced for what it is.

With one year warranty? No thanks. Plus i wan't to connect many other things exept mac pro to the Dell 2408.

CONNECTIVITY
High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) with High Definition Content Protection (HDCP)
DisplayPort
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Component Video
Separate Video (S-Video)
Composite Video

What else would you want to connect with the display? A ps3? Just get an hdtv for that its a million times better.

I dont know basically an overpriced inferior panel with no led technolgy display that you can connect your ps3 to.

Or get a 24" LED ACD with the newest technology that blows any Dell monitor in terms of quality out of the water for just a couple hundred bucks more.

Plus if you purchase your mac pro and your 24" LED ACD together you can put the apple care 3 year under both monitor and mac pro.

There is a reason why Dell offers more than a year warranty, I would to if I sold pieces of s*it in a box.

Significant? Maybe... but is 4fps really the difference between "sucking hard" and "tooling it" ? ;)

I'm sure I could gain 4fps by reducing a detail or two within the game. Traffic is the biggest culprit IIRC. If that's the difference between making a game playable or not, I'd gladly sacrifice a couple of AI aircraft.

For what it's worth, the latest benchmarks (the ones I based my "tooling" comment on) are as follows on Tom's:

8800GT: 33.60

4870: 25.60

One thing I'd like to note is that, I think people shouldnt skimp out on a nice external monitor. Because the monitor will easily outlast any desktop system and several upgrades.

Just have 1 nice display that you can always use and upgrade your computer every 3-4 years.

Beg to differ, displays degrade over time, computers don't, they only become outdated.

As for the Apple 24" , it seems to be well liked by many, too bad you can't use it for work, being glossy and thus not colour-true and crippled by the Mini Display thingy.

Let's hope Apple will come out with a monitor line befitting its workstations.

Thats the whole point for LED backlight technology. It wont degrade over time. ;)

Its not crippled if you have a new mac and it seems like everyone is buying a new mac pro or the ati cards which supports the mini displayport so problems solved.

Also there are many color work professionals that prefers glossy because they say that the final color work almost always looks more saturated in real life closer to the glossy instead of the more washed out matte.

Yeah, if you want to pay twice the going price of the PC version to get the mini-displayport cards. Screw that. Someone will drop a DVI LED IPS display soon, and Xenu willing it'll be matte with no speakers or cam, and be cheaper.

EH you can say the same thing about everything. They will come out with something better and cheaper, of course they will.

But for now the 24" LED ACD cant be beat and probably not for the next 6-12 months or so. Also why would they keep moving foward with old technology as DVI where you'd need a special dual link to support the higher resolutions 2560x1600 when a mini displayport has a much bigger bandwidth and can easily support that resolution with no problems.

If anything other vendors will adopt the displayport not mini but just the original displayport.

Seeing as the 24" is only 1920x1200, I think they could have been a bit less retarded and put DVI and DisplayPort both on there. Maybe even using removable cables, too. I'd actually stop whining if I could hook it to my current machine and current video card

Well many others would love a 30" with a 2560x1600. In time DVI will be phased out and adapters will have a new market with displayport>DVI.
