I'm eagerly awaiting new Apple displays before I buy a new 2009 octad 2.66 Mac Pro...

What are other new buyers doing? Going with the old Apple 30? The glossy 24?

Why no choices, Apple?

Dell instead of the Apple Cinima.

NEC or EIZO for the best.

I asked dell for a student discount on there $2000 30inch display and I was told and I quote:

Me: "do you offer any student discounts?"
Dell: "No, dell can not offer any discounts, that would cause a huge lose to dell"
Me: "really so you won't give me a discount for school?"
Dell: "no"
Me: "so not even $20"
Dell: "F**k off" (click, she hung up on me)

My 30inch ACD is the nicest display I have ever owned. It destroys the 19inch gateway next to it, But boy is it hot, if you lean up close you can feel the warmth of a summer sun on your face.

The Dell is $1349 now.

Quite.

I bought a Logitech Vision Pro, it's pretty impressive, and there's no way I'd go back to an iSight at this point.

Agreed. Mine just came in the mail yesterday and I'm loving it. Grue, do you have a problem on wake from sleep where it can't find the webcam? I've noticed this on my pro. I have to unplug/plug in the cam after a wake from sleep for the computer to recognize the camera. It still seems to see the microphone, but not the camera. Works fine after a restart though...

I haven't had that problem… how is yours plugged in? Which applications aren't recognizing it?

It's plugged in directly to a USB port in the back (I tried it in the front, same result). I checked it in some apple apps (iChat, Photo Booth) and they didn't find a camera. After unplugging it and putting it back in, they picked up the camera right away. Hmmm...

When I got mine I also got the 23". In hindsight I most likely would have chosen differently. It not really a bad display, it just like a lot of others that are less expensive. Aesthetically they are the best, but aesthetics only go so far.

I read in an article before that Apple uses same components as Eizos do. Such as Glass, internal components, boards and such that makes the whole display.

Maybe... For EIZO's bottom of the line...

Eizo monitors are so far ahead of anything Apple makes it's not even funny.

Also the 30" Dell was selling for $800 in early 2008 or late 2007. I almost bought two of those instead of the two I ended up with but they were just too big. Dual 30" displays will throw your neck out of joint trying to actually use them. :)

the eizos at work are stunning. we took an ACD out of one of the suites because it actually didn't look good next to a CE240W, and even that monitor isn't as nice as the one next to it they use for HD monitoring (i can't remember which one that is, but it's heaven)... though we keep 30 inch ACD's in the color and sound rooms. most of the other suites have NEC's

i think they use two eizo monitors hooked up to the demo mac in the abel cine tech showroom. they command attention even in a candy store like that.

I purchased the 24" LED Apple Cinema Display along with a Mac Pro from the Online Apple Store.

I just received the monitor today but the computer hasn't arrived yet. I can't wait :).

Every time I play with my dad's 24" iMac I absolutely love the stunning picture quality on it.

I am actually a big fan of glossy monitors. The Sony Xbrite glossy monitor was actually my first LCD.

I have a question, What is the difference between the display built into the 24" imac and the 24" LED Cinema Display? they're both H-IPS panels right?

not enough thought put into it (by Apple)

AGH! Shame on Apple (but not enough to turn me away, just disappointed): I bought two new 24" (you know, glass front, built-in camera, mini-displayport connector) BUT had to *cobble* a solution (not befitting the sexy nature of Apple).

THE PROBLEM: the built-in cable is too short; designed with having it next to a laptop in mind. Couldn't have the two monitors next to each other, had to drill a hole in my desk (not the one that was already in the corner, or as some might go straight back and over), exactly between the two monitors, and the back of my MacPro has to sit directly under that hole. To make it worse, no mini-displayport extension cable (at least Apple includes an extension cable for their keyboards, which also have short cables). Couldn't they have just gone for a regular displayport (why the Apple only mini?).

BOTTOM LINE: For the MacPro, just go with one 30" (or get two Samsung 24" with DVI connectors).

Well, I got another 30" Apple ACD for my latest Mac Pro (octad-2.66). Disappointed that a newer version wasn't out... Also, why did Apple have to discontinue the 20" and 23"? It would have been nice to have a matching second smaller display... instead I'll have to go with a third party :(

I ordered a 24" LED ACD with my Quad-Core Mac Pro. I wish it wasn't glossy, but it'll do.

I'm debating on picking up a 24 or waiting on the eventual release of the 30. Decisions, decisions.. :D:apple:

NOTE to MacPro/mini-displayport users

If you get a new 2009 MacPro and the new 24" display (you know, mini-displayport), you will first need to use a DVI monitor to get past the initial setup--just spent an hour on the phone with Apple, who didn't know this (only tests with up-and-running machines, not wiped-for-customer-out-of-box ones)--was my suggestion to try this (end-user pickup up Apple's slack?!--poor planning Apple).

I know, it doesn't seem right, but I'm sure even a VGA (with DVI adapter) monitor would work--just need it to the regular once-you-are-logged-in, then you can just hot swap for your one or two 24" Apple monitors (that look sexy, but again: BEWARE THE SHORT CORD).

I have a 24" LED Cinema Display. I got a great deal on it so I had to pull the trigger. If the new 30" is worth it then I will sell this one. It is a beautiful display though it is glossy. Worth it if you can stand the glossy. Thats funny I never had to use a DVI monitor, mine just worked. HMM

Which graphic card do you have? I just recieved my second MacPro today (first one had a deffective fan) and with the Radeon HD 4870 it worked out of the box for both MacPros. No need to use a DVI monitor.

I just bought two more used Alu 23" ACDs for $500 each. I'm not ready to go glossy as my rooms are full of windows and light here in SoCal. For me, deeper blacks and more vivid colors are are not worth the drawbacks of your display acting like a mirror!

I'm in the market for a 30" though and I am still hoping that Apple will eventually release a new 30" LED display with a matte screen. I don't want to purchase the current model as it get very hot if you sit close to it. I've tried Samsung's XL30 LED display, and that does not get hot at all.

I passed on the 24". Glossy is the biggest reason but the short cord didn't help push me toward it either. I'll probably end up with the HP L2475w unless Apple releases a 24" matte in the next few weeks.

Nec3090

I already have two ACD in use, one 23", one 20".

I wanted a 30" ACD for my new Mac Pro, but I was put off by the "old tech" ... when I looked at the displays in the Apple Store, the 30" ACD looked a bit dull and the 24"LED way too glossy.

I went with a refurbished NEC3090 (factory refurb, 1-yr warranty - $1.2k), which most reviews call a spectacular monitor (apart from $5k Eizo models). It will be delivered today, along with my new Mac Pro.

I feel I must post this article in response to all the glossy bashers.

Honestly, I think it is a matter of personal preference. And what you are doing. No one would disagree that the glossy screen is nice if you're in a suitably lit room watching a movie... but to use it for work near reflected light, IN MY OPINION, is annoying. If others find it tolerable, that's great. To each his/her own!;)

I still have my original 20" Apple Cinema Display. I prefer the matte finish of the older model. It's a nice display, but I wish it had a faster response time and a higher contrast ratio.
