I did with last year's XS Max but I have never lost my phone or had it stolen, so I'm not sure if I'll go that route this year. How about you all?

Insurance is just that: insurance.

You’re not banking that something will happen. You’re banking that if it does happen, you’ll be fine.

If you have a plan in place for your phone being stolen, via house insurance or otherwise, that’s great. If you can’t afford the hit and you’re SOL if it is stolen, then you shouldn’t go without.

Yes, for the first 6-18 months or so until value goes down.

In the past two years I’ve lost my phone.

No theft/loss here, not worth it IMO. For those who have a tendency to lose their phones (I don' know how that is possible) it would be worth it I guess.
I was reviewing my plan with AT&T and it looks like i've been paying AT&T monthly for theft/loss insurance which I am going to cancel when I change my plan over to the unlimited data plan.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm also on the iPhone Upgrade Program and I know the standard AppleCare+ comes with it but I was just wondering how many people used it, if at all.

It’s $4 and change for theft or total loss on top of AppleCare+
AppleCare doesn’t cover destruction or separation of the housing and contents.

Bent it in half, Ran over it, dog chewed it,
hard fall and case dents or screen pops off
Stolen, lost at sea, left in a cab. Etc.
That’s what you are paying for

otherwise you’re self insured.

At every Apple store there is a bin somewhere in the back collecting destroyed devices. And those are the ones that are turned in if a replacement gets sold.
Trombones wah-wah are heard weekly at the counter.

when the iPod was in its prime it was daily child and parent tag team.
Most that could be done was 10% discount toward new

I’m not pay $200 extra for my $1000 iPhone 11 Pro. That’s a 20% ripoff. That’s like paying $6000 insurance on a $30,000 vehicle.

Apple care + with Theft and Loss is $299, so its 30%. Add the deductible of $269 and you are looking about $600 + taxes which is 60%. An absolutely bad deal. Use a credit card that has theft and loss protection instead.

I haven't bought any Apple Care on any of my Apple products.. I try to be as careful as possible and hope for the best.. However I do think next time I'll go with it on the Apple Watch..

insurance is a strange thing. it's probably the only thing in the world you happily pay for it and wish you just paid for nothing.

As a teacher, I get the theft and loss insurance. In my fifteen years of teaching have had more than one phone stolen from my desk (both in drawers and on table).

I got it this year. It’s my first time getting it. I usually just do AppleCare+. I’ve never lost a phone, but it was only $4.17 per month extra.

Anyone know how it would work if you’re on the IUP program? Pay the $269 deductible, get a replacement and then start over from scratch on payments?

But when disaster strikes you are VERY happy you have it. A month ago I broke the back of my XS (first time I ever broke a phone). Paying the $99 deductible kinda sucked, but its nothing compared to the $549 or whatever it is if I didn't have AppleCare. Even more so when talking about health and auto

Just me, but I always buy it and make sure a used phone I buy has it. Can't beat advance exchange if you are in a bind as well.

It really is a strange concept, and the prices make it better to just risk it. Applecare on the 11 cost $149 and $29 for a cracked screen ($180 total). If you do not have AppleCare and crack your screen it is $199. You are talking about a $20 difference and you keep the $149 if you never have an incident.

Obviously people who have multiple incidents are saving money, but to buy insurance for a potential $20 savings if you have an accident isn't worth it.

You can buy the phone and the previous owner can cancel it right away for a prorated refund. If they do not transfer the AppleCare to you, you should never pay a premium second hand for a device with AC.

Look at reviews for the Theft and Loss coverage. Find my iPhone obviously needs to be turned on, however, if it is stolen and turned off, I read about enough cases of Apple not honoring the Theft and Loss portion that turned me off from buying it.

I always have the owner transfer it, but thanks for telling me what I should/shouldn't do.

How dare I give solid advice, because not everyone realizes that and you could have been one of those people.

Serious question. How would someone get into your phone to turn that off? They would actually have to know your password. I can understand that logic from Apple's point of view.

Any idea if AmEx offers theft or loss protection? That is what I used to pay for mine.
edit: and I only selected regular applecare.

here's one data point:
I've owned iPhones since the iPhone 4 and have never dropped one, lost one or damaged one. For me personally, Apple Care would be a ripoff

My only guess would be like my kids passwords when they were much younger with their first iPhones. passcode was 1111 and Apple ID password was 1111 . Naturally....thats not the case now.

I’ve always decided against Apple Care but I opted for it this time. I didn’t get the theft though. I hate the extra cost but since the phones cost so much now I figured I’d bite the bullet.
