Insurance is just that: insurance.

You’re not banking that something will happen. You’re banking that if it does happen, you’ll be fine.

If you have a plan in place for your phone being stolen, via house insurance or otherwise, that’s great. If you can’t afford the hit and you’re SOL if it is stolen, then you shouldn’t go without.
Yup. You never need insurance until you need it.

Haven't lost or gotten my phone stolen in my life, but still opted for it especially since I travel for my line of work. AppleCare+ will always end up paying for itself IF you have to use it. Yeah it is a bet of will you use it or not. So far for me it has been money just being thrown out the window for the phone at least( came in handy for my iPad Pro when it got bent). But it is peace of mind especially seeing how out of warranty costs of phones are going for today.

Just a friendly heads up for those that may not know.....Applecare Plus is a nice thing to have regardless.
If you trade your iPhone in, you can call AppleCare, and they will refund you the price paid minus the time used. If you sell your phone, it adds value to the sale price of the phone. And of course the actual coverage for peace of mind. I like the idea of loss and theft, but as mentioned, too many reviews showing coverage denials, and none seeing coverage actually working.

Any idea if AmEx offers theft or loss protection? That is what I used to pay for mine.
edit: and I only selected regular applecare.
I don't have amex but amex do have the best benefits out of all the card companies. I would assume a minimum of 90-120 days of coverage from the date of purchase. Not 2 years like applecare plus but you don't have to hand over a kidney.

Speaking of Apple Care I have a question. When your ready to sell/pass on your phone with Apple Care, does the Apple care automatically transfer with the phone?

I think it’s smart that Apple is including theft protection, it’s not a secret that iPhones are one most stolen commodities on the market. It’s been happening for years, and I think this is a ‘safe bet’ for those maybe who are less mindful of their property or one of those situations where you never know where you misplace your phone.

As an example:

Two weeks ago, I stopped at a local brewery in my city, before leaving, I left my phone at the bar counter when I went to the restroom, when I came back, thankfully it was still there. But my point is, I _never_ make mistakes like that and I was actually shaking my head at myself, being that was an open situation for anyone to steal my phone and walk away with it. Costly mistake that makes you think twice.

I always get AppleCare - more for repairs etc rather then theft or loss.
If I sell my handset and haven't used AppleCare then I phone up and get the remainder refunded - like I did with my iPhone X, and like I will with my XS Max.
I just like to have the piece of mind.

I bought the theft and loss protection. I know it’s a ripoff, but what if . . . .

The total cost for you will be about $600 if you do lose or damage phone. For $600, just go buy a new iphone 11 or iphone 8 instead and make do until 2020.

For the phone, I only get AC+ because the IUP requires it. I've never had a situation where I've had a problem that AC or AC+ would have helped with. That's even more true for me with theft and loss, but there may be people who would benefit. I'd start by seeing what other coverage that's already being paid for is available and on what terms (for example, deductible). Unless the risk of theft or loss is pretty high, I'd pass, but YMMV.

Not sure if AMEX offers this, but Citi doubles your manufactures warranty or a purchased warranty (most credit card companies don't extend a purchased warranty). So if you buy an iPhone through Citi and buy the AC+ Theft and Loss, your phone will be covered with all of the AC+ T&L protection for 4 years.

For the last couple of years I've just been getting the regular AppleCare but this year I am doing iUP for the first time and I opted for the theft protection. the difference was not that much and it gives me a sense of being protected should something happen, works for me.

Extended warranty is different from theft and loss. Extended warranty is usually 1-2 years after warranty expiration and will not cover theft and loss. Will only cover what apple would normally repair under warranty. Broken screens and such will not be covered under extended warranty. Don't use citibank, they will drop all these benefits on all their cards except the highest tiers on september 22. Read your card benefits carefully. And don't use apple card to purchase the iphone. Apple card has no benefits whatsoever.

Since I’m in the IuP program, I view it as if I’m renting to purchase my iPhone 11 Pro Max, therefore I view the Apple Care + as a form of renters insurance. So yes I went with it.

I'm aware of the 9/22 drop of certain benefits (a lot of companies are dropping some of the protection benefits), but it doesn't apply to all of their cards and my specific card will still have the extended warranty protection now and after 9/22. Isn't AC + T&L an extended warranty? I know AC+ is an extended warranty which Citi will cover for an additional 2 years past AC+ expiration.

Some credit cards also offer 4 months of theft/loss protection from the date of purchase.

If you have to use it more than once*. For a single claim it is only a $20 difference for a cracked screen on the 11, $50 on the pro, and $100 on the max. Personally, I think that makes it worth the risk of no insurance.

Apple care + is extended warranty, apple care + with theft and loss is warranty plus insurance. The insurance part is not covered under extended warranty. You do get the theft and loss insurance for 90-120 days depending on your state.

It is tied to the phone, but you can also attach a name to it. If you sell your phone or purchase a phone with AC attach a name to AC. The reason for this is that you could sell the phone as having AC and then cancel the AppleCare for a refund right after the sale. It would be a dirt ball thing to do, but I am sure it happens often.

Sure.

Everyone has different risk tolerance or levels of risk( how often does your life put you into scenarios where phones may be broken, lost, stolen, etc).

Also in the favor of AC is if the back glass cracks. They do not replace that and instead give you an entirely new phone. That runs anywhere from $399 - $599 for the new phones without AC.

That right there is the argument for AC+ for the glass-back phones, in my view. But loss and theft is a different issue.

Left my phone for the first time in a Lyft ride from the airport a month ago. I was a wreak for that space in time between realizing what I had done and getting contact that the driver found my phone and was bringing it back to me.

Made me really consider the additional coverage. Not sure if I will get it, but I really could not have my iPhone on me as much as I need to use it throughout any day.

Applecare+ is required for the Apple Upgrade Program and I added the loss and theft protection to that for the $4.xx more. One nice thing is with the upgrade program you are only paying for AppleCare+ and theft on the months you keep that particular phone. When you upgrade in a year you start all over. It's like just paying monthly AppleCare in that sense to me.
